Geodiversity—the variability of Earth's surface materials, forms, and physical processes—is an integral part of nature and crucial for sustaining ecosystems and their services. It provides the substrates, landform mosaics, and dynamic physical processes for habitat development and maintenance. By determining the heterogeneity of the physical environment in conjunction with climate interactions, geodiversity has a crucial influence on biodiversity across a wide range of scales. From a literature review, we identified the diverse values of geodiversity; examined examples of the dependencies of biodiversity on geodiversity at a site‐specific scale (for geosites <1 km2 in area); and evaluated various human‐induced threats to geosites and geodiversity. We found that geosites are important to biodiversity because they often support rare or unique biota adapted to distinctive environmental conditions or create a diversity of microenvironments that enhance species richness. Conservation of geodiversity in the face of a range of threats is critical both for effective management of nature's stage and for its own particular values. This requires approaches to nature conservation that integrate climate, biodiversity, and geodiversity at all spatial scales. 相似文献

Two expert programs, soil fertility capability classification (SFCC) and ACID4, were used to assess fertility of some soils in the highland region of Rwanda. Soils were grouped with respect to altitude, rainfall and parent material into three agro-ecological zones. Soils in Zone 3 with high rainfall, low altitude and underlain by quartzite-schists complex were lower in pertility and more acidic than their counterparts in Zones 1 and 2. N, P and K were generally deficient. Ca and Mg were considered as borderline cases and are expected to fall below acceptable levels after few years of cultivation. The SFCC identified clayey topsoils (> 35% clay), acidic (Al saturation between 10 and 60%) and low K reserves (exchangeable K < 0.2 mEq (100 g)−1) as the dominant fertility class. Crop residue management, agroforestry and green manure systems are recommended in addition to P and K fertilization to alleviate nutrient deficiency problems. Soil acidity was associated with exchangeable Al and Al saturation was > 50% at pH <5.2. Base saturation was negatively correlated with Al saturation and positively related to Ca+Mg. Therefore liming to supply Ca and Mg may reduce exchangeable Al, improve ECEC and nutrient retention. Lime requirement ranged from 0 to 6 t CaCO3 ha−1 and was directly proportional to exchangeable Al (r = 0.95**) and inversely related to pH (fr = −0.73**). Results from lime prediction equation, estimated lime requirement (Y) = 1.332×Al−0.11, computed for soils in the region concurred with those of other workers. 相似文献

Endocrine disrupters are of substantial concern, in large part because effects of these compounds on the growth and development of many aquatic organisms are unknown. We examined toxic effects of three substances (ethylbenzene, nonylphenol, and bisphenol A), that are known to be hormonally active in many animals, on growth and development of two species of freshwater sponge. A common developmental abnormality was observed when sponges were treated with each of these compounds. The three compounds also caused significant reductions in growth rates. Lower concentrations resulted in malformed water vascular systems in several replicates. The utility of freshwater sponge bioassays is discussed as it relates to understanding possible mechanisms of action of endocrine disrupters on aquatic invertebrates. 相似文献

Summary This paper is the fourth in a series on cardenolide fingerprints of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus, Danainae) and their host-plant milkweeds (Asclepiadaceae) in the eastern United States. Cardenolide concentrations ofAsclepias humistrata plants from north central Florida ranged from 71 to 710 µg/0.1 g dry weight, with a mean of 417 µg/0.1 g. Monarchs reared individually on these plants contained cardenolide concentrations ranging from 243 to 575 µg/0.1 g dry weight, with a mean of 385 µg/0.1 g. Cardenolide uptake by butterflies was independent of plant concentration, suggesting that sequestration saturation occurs in monarchs fed cardenolide-rich host plants. Thinlayer chromatography resolved 19 cardenolides in the plants and 15 in the butterflies. In addition to humistratin,A. humistrata plants contained several relatively non-polar cardenolides of the calotropagenin series which are metabolized to more polar derivatives in the butterflies. These produced a butterfly cardenolide fingerprint clearly distinct from those previously established for monarchs reared on otherAsclepias species. In emetic assays with the blue jay,Cyanocitta cristata, the 50% emetic dose (ED50) per jay was 57.1 µg, and the average number of ED50 units per butterfly was 13.8, establishing that this important south eastern milkweed produces highly emetic, chemically defended monarchs. Our data provide further support for the use of cardenolide fingerprints of wild-caught monarchs to make ecological predictions concerning defence against natural enemies, seasonal movement and larval host-plant utilization by monarch butterflies during their annual cycle of migration, breeding and overwintering. 相似文献

We used multiple and logistic regression analysis to study the breeding-area requirements of 10 species of grassland and early-successional birds at 90 grassland-barren sites in Maine. The incidence of six of the species was clearly sensitive to the area of grassland. Upland Sandpipers, the species with the largest area requirements, were infrequent at sites of less than 50 ha and reached 50% incidence at those of about 200 ha. Grasshopper Sparrows reached 50% incidence at about 100 ha, Vesper Sparrows at about 20 ha, and Savannah Sparrows at about 10 ha. Incidence for three edge species, Brown Thrasher, Common Yellowthroat, and Song Sparrow, was negatively correlated with open area, and incidence for Field Sparrows was not strongly influenced by grassland size. These results indicate that grasslands need to be approximately 200 ha in area if they are to be likely to support a diverse grass land bird fauna. However, large grasslands or grassland-barrens are rare; random samples indicated that in Maine only 1% of hayfields and only 8% of grassland-barrens were more than 64 ha in area. Conservation efforts seeking to protect habitat for rare grassland birds need to consider sites of at least 100 ha—and preferably 200 ha—in size, and these are notably rare in Maine and probably throughout New England and eastern North America. Airports provide some of the last extensive patches of grassland habitat in the northeast. To maintain viable populations of area-sensitive grassland birds, management of these sites for nesting birds will become increasingly important. 相似文献

There are millions of small isolatedwetlands in the semi-arid Canadian prairies. These`sloughs' are refuges for wildlife in an area that isotherwise intensively used for agriculture. They areparticularly important as waterfowl habitat, with morethan half of all North American ducks nesting inprairie sloughs. The water levels and ecology of thewetlands are sensitive to atmospheric change and tochanges of agricultural practices in the surroundingfields. Monitoring of the hydrological conditions ofthe wetlands across the region is vital for detectinglong-term trends and for studying the processes thatcontrol the water balance of the wetlands. Suchmonitoring therefore requires extensive regional-scaledata complemented by intensive measurements at a fewlocations. At present, wetlands are being enumeratedacross the region once each year and year-roundmonitoring is being carried out at a few locations. Theregional-scale data can be statistically related toregional climate data, but such analyses cast littlelight on the hydrological processes and have limitedpredictive value when climate and land use arechanging. The intensive monitoring network has providedimportant insights but it now needs to be expanded andrevised to meet new questions concerning the effects ofclimate change and land use. 相似文献
