The USEPA replaced TSP with PM10 as the National Ambient Air Quality Standard for particulate matter. The commercially available PM10 sampler is a high-volume model using quartz fiber filters. In certain investigations, such as source apportionment studies, chemical analysis of the filter is necessary, however, many analyses cannot be run on quartz filters. An alternate filter such as Teflon is amenable to XRF and ion chemical analyses but is not amenable to analysis for carbon. To overcome these problems DRI constructed a medium-volume PM10 sampler that is capable of collecting particulates on both Teflon and quartz fiber filters simultaneously. This paper describes the design of the DRI medium-volume PM10 sampler, discusses a method for determining equivalence of two samplers, the results of applying the method to test the equivalence of the medium-volume sampler and a commerical high-volume sampler, and examines differences between PM10 and TSP measurements in a southwestern desert. 相似文献

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) which have become widespread environmental pollutants due to their persistence and bioaccumulativeness. Pure authentic PBDE congeners are required for chemical analysis, assessments of their chemical/physical properties and toxicological studies. We here report an improved method for synthesis of authentic PBDE congeners applying bromophenols and symmetrical brominated diphenyliodonium salts as building blocks. Altogether, 13 PBDEs were synthesized of which seven are new. The improved coupling reaction between the bromophenol and the brominated diphenyliodonium salts resulted in enhanced yields for PBDEs substituted with more than six bromine atoms. Also, improvements in iodonium salt synthesis made it possible to synthesize symmetrical hexabromodiphenyliodonium salts for the first time, i.e. 2,2',3,3',4,4'-, 2,2',4,4',5,5'- and 2,2',4,4',6,6'-hexabromodiphenyliodonium salts and they made it possible to prepare octabrominated PBDEs via the actual coupling method. All synthesized compounds were characterized by (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR spectra and by their melting points. Unsustainable exploitation of wild species represents a serious threat to biodiversity and to the livelihoods of local communities and Indigenous peoples. However, managed, sustainable use has the potential to forestall extinctions, aid recovery, and meet human needs. We analyzed species-level data for 30,923 species from 13 taxonomic groups on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species to investigate patterns of intentional biological resource use. Forty percent of species (10,098 of 25,009 species from 10 data-sufficient taxonomic groups) were used. The main purposes of use were pets, display animals, horticulture, and human consumption. Intentional use is currently contributing to elevated extinction risk for 28–29% of threatened or near threatened (NT) species (2752–2848 of 9753 species). Intentional use also affected 16% of all species used (1597–1631 of 10,098). However, 72% of used species (7291 of 10,098) were least concern, of which nearly half (3469) also had stable or improving population trends. The remainder were not documented as threatened by biological resource use, including at least 172 threatened or NT species with stable or improving populations. About one-third of species that had use documented as a threat had no targeted species management actions to directly address this threat. To improve use-related red-list data, we suggest small amendments to the relevant classification schemes and required supporting documentation. Our findings on the prevalence of sustainable and unsustainable use, and variation across taxa, can inform international policy making, including the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, the Convention on Biological Diversity, and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. 相似文献

Growth rates of juvenile Capitella sp. I were determined on different rations of six food types: Gerber's mixed cereal, TetraMin fish flakes, benthic diatoms, Ulva sp., spring detritus, and summer detritus. A simple growth model estimated maximum growth rate and maintenance ration for each food. There were differences in the growth response among foods relative to nitrogen content. As juveniles increased in size, differences in growth between foods became more pronounced. For all juveniles, growth rates were correlated with levels of the amino acids histidine, phenylalanine, threonine, and valine, and the polyunsaturated fatty acid 20:5w3; correlations with histidine and phenylalanine levels were the most significant. Regressions of growth rates as a function of these two amino acids suggest a daily maintenance ration of 300 pg histidine and phenylalanine mg-1 nitrogen biomass. Juvenile worms grew on spring detritus but not on summer detritus, indicating the probable importance of micronutrients (polyunsaturated fatty acids, amino acids) for growth of juvenile Capitella sp. Watershed ordinances in Austin, Texas, USA, are intended to protect streams from stormwater degradation. Their adequacy is
being questioned, however, where development is advancing into the Hill Country northwest and southwest of the city. Detailed
investigation into hillslope runoff reveals that several important facts were overlooked in the ordinances, including locally
high infiltration rates and drainage basins, which function as partial area systems. As a result, development planning is
not taking advantage of the natural mitigation potential of the land. Roads cut across infiltration and moisture retention
areas on side slopes, enlarging the partial area system feeding streams with stormflows. In addition, most residential planning
is not responsive to the stepped microtopography of Hill Country drainage basins and the critical scale at which local runoff
processes operate. Recommendations include adjusting the scale and configuration of development to conform with local runoff
processes and features and taking advantage of the water-absorbing capacities of basin side slopes. The lesson for ordinance
writers is that standard models of community stormwater ordinances are not appropriate for all terrains, especially complex
