The water quality monitoring data of eight rivers situated in the Finnish Lapland above the Arctic Circle were investigated. These rivers are icebound annually for about 200 days. They belong to the International River Basin District founded according to the European Union Water Framework Directive and shared with Norway. They are part of the European river monitoring network that includes some 3,400 river sites. The water quality monitoring datasets available varied between the rivers, the longest comprising the period 1975–2003 and the shortest 1989–2003. For each river, annual medians of eight water quality variables were calculated. In addition, medians and fifth and 95th percentiles were calculated for the whole observation periods. The medians indicated good river water quality in comparison to other national or foreign rivers. However, the river water quality oscillated widely. Some rivers were in practice in pristine state, whereas some showed slight human impacts, e.g., occasional high values of hygienic indicator bacteria. 相似文献

The subsurface spreading behaviour of gasoline, as well as several other common soil- and groundwater pollutants (e.g. diesel, creosote), is complicated by the fact that it is a mixture of hundreds of different constituents, behaving differently with respect to e.g. dissolution, volatilisation, adsorption and biodegradation. Especially for scenarios where the non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) phase is highly mobile, such as for sudden spills in connection with accidents, it is necessary to simultaneously analyse the migration of the NAPL and its individual components in order to assess risks and environmental impacts. Although a few fully coupled, multi-phase, multi-constituent models exist, such models are highly complex and may be time consuming to use. A new, somewhat simplified methodology for modelling the subsurface migration of gasoline while taking its multi-constituent nature into account is therefore introduced here. Constituents with similar properties are grouped together into eight fractions. The migration of each fraction in the aqueous and gaseous phases as well as adsorption is modelled separately using a single-constituent multi-phase flow model, while the movement of the free-phase gasoline is essentially the same for all fractions. The modelling is done stepwise to allow updating of the free-phase gasoline composition at certain time intervals. The output is the concentration of the eight different fractions in the aqueous, gaseous, free gasoline and solid phases with time. The approach is evaluated by comparing it to a fully coupled multi-phase, multi-constituent numerical simulator in the modelling of a typical accident-type spill scenario, based on a tanker accident in northern Sweden. Here the PCFF method produces results similar to those of the more sophisticated, fully coupled model. The benefit of the method is that it is easy to use and can be applied to any single-constituent multi-phase numerical simulator, which in turn may have different strengths in incorporating various processes. The results demonstrate that the different fractions have significantly different migration behaviours and although the methodology involves some simplifications, it is a considerable improvement compared to modelling the gasoline constituents completely individually or as one single mixture. 相似文献

With its total drainage basin of 37 107 km2 and mean annual discharge of 307 m3 s-1, the River Kymi is one of the largest in Finland. Presently it receives treated domestic wastewaters of about 160 000 inhabitants through eight treatment plants and treated industrial effluents from four paper mills, two cardboard mills and one pulp mill. In the 1960s all the wastewaters were discharged untreated to the river. However, the construction of domestic wastewater treatment plants began in the 1970s and mechanical wastewater treatment became common in industry. By the end of the 1980s practically all the wastewaters discharged to the river were treated in activated sludge processes. The aim of this paper was to investigate the influence of wastewater purification on the bacteriological quality of the river during these three decades. The bacteriological quality of the river was evaluated on the basis of annual medians of fecal streptococci (FS) calculated for 15 sites on the basis of 4804 FS enumerations from the years 1964-1992. The results show that the bacteriological quality improved steadily as the number of treatment plants increased and wastewater treatment became more effective. In the beginning of the 1960s the annual FS medians in the central part of the river were typically 1000-1500 CFU/100 ml, whereas in the 1990s they had decreased to 30-40 CFU/100 ml (CFU = colony forming units). The results indicate that FS input to the river was mainly of domestic origin. 相似文献

Mother really knows best: host choice of adult phytophagous insect females reflects a within-host variation in suitability as larval food 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Non-random distribution patterns of specialized phytophagous insects on their hosts may depend on intraspecific differences
in plant tissue quality, including nutrients and secondary compounds. Secondary compounds are involved in plant resistance,
but are also important for the recognition and acceptability of plants as resources by specialized insects. If individuals
within a plant species vary in their content of such secondary substances, there may also be qualitative differences between
them. In such cases, natural selection will favor insects with the ability to distinguish and prefer the more suitable plants.
In Sweden, the leaf beetle Gonioctena linnaeana Schrank (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) is highly specialized on one host, the native willow Salix triandra L (Salicaceae). Field observations reveal that some host plants in a population harbor many feeding larvae, causing severe
defoliation, whereas neighboring plants may have few or no feeding larvae. Our hypothesis is that the distribution pattern
of G. linnaeana larvae in this population results from qualitative differences between individual host plants in combination with the ability
of G. linnaeana females to distinguish between plants that are suitable and not suitable for offspring performance. We examine whether larval
survival differs depending on diet and whether the content of secondary chemical compounds explains female preference. Based
on the higher survival rate of larvae reared on leaves from preferred hosts, we conclude that G. linnaeana females have evolved a behavior that maximizes offspring performance and thus positively affects female fitness. A chemical
survey of the plants indicates that luteolin-7-glucoside and an unidentified flavonoid are important for separating the preferred
from the non-preferred plants. 相似文献
