Phytoestrogens are natural components of plant-based food items with beneficial health effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the chronic effects of dietary phytoestrogens, genistein (8 mg kg(-1) day(-1)) and beta-sitosterol (50 mg kg(-1) day(-1)), on the weight regulation of the mink (Mustela vison). The parental generation was exposed from August 2002 to May-June 2003 to either beta-sitosterol or genistein, while the kits were exposed through gestation and lactation. Food consumption and body masses were monitored monthly. Plasma lipid, glucose, total protein and hormone (ghrelin, leptin, triiodothyronine and thyroxine) concentrations were measured from the parents in August 2002, January 2003 and at the end of the experiment in May-June 2003 when the kits were 21 days of age. Relative food intake was higher in the beta-sitosterol-exposed minks than in the control or genistein minks in September 2002. Plasma leptin and total protein concentrations were lower in the beta-sitosterol kits compared to the control kits. Furthermore, plasma ghrelin levels and liver phosphorylase activities of the mink kits were higher due to genistein exposure. In mink kits, exposure to both phytoestrogens reduced the plasma thyroxine concentrations. The kidney glycogen concentrations and the muscle phosphorylase activities of phytoestrogen-treated adult minks were elevated. The results of this study suggest that minks are sensitive to perinatal phytoestrogen exposure.  相似文献

Waste plastic (WP) and tall oil pitch (T), which are organic recycled industrial by-products, have been used as a binder with bitumen in stone mastic asphalt (SMA) and asphalt concrete (AC). We compared the exposure over one workday in 16 road pavers participating in a survey at four paving sites, using mixes of conventional asphalt (SMA, AC) or mixes containing waste material (SMA-WPT, AC-WPT). The concentrations of 11 aldehydes in air were 515 and 902 microg m(-3) at the SMA-WPT and AC-WPT worksites, being 3 and 13 times greater than at the corresponding worksites laying conventional asphalt. Resin acids (2-42 microg m(-3)), which are known sensitizers, were detected only during laying of AC-WPT. The emission levels (microg m(-3)) of total particulates (300-500), bitumen fumes (60-160), bitumen vapour (80-1120), naphthalene (0.59-1.2), phenanthrene (0.21-0.32), pyrene (<0.015-0.20), benzo(a)pyrene (<0.01) and the sum of 16 PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, 1.28-2.00) were similar for conventional and WPT asphalts. The dermal deposition of 16 PAHs on exposure pads (on workers' wrist) was low in all pavers (0.7-3.5 ng cm(-2)). Eight OH-PAH biomarkers of naphthalene, phenanthrene and pyrene exposures were quantified in pre- and post-shift urine specimens. The post-shift concentrations (mean +/- SD, micromol mol(-1) creatinine) of 1- plus 2-naphthol; 1-,2-,3-,4- plus 9-phenanthrol; and 1-hydroxypyrene were, respectively, for asphalt workers: 18.1+/- 8.0, 2.41 +/- 0.71 and 0.66+/- 0.58 (smokers); 6.0+/- 2.3, 1.70+/- 0.72 and 0.27+/- 0.15 (non-smokers); WPT asphalt workers: 22.0+/- 9.2, 2.82+/- 1.11 and 0.76+/- 0.18 (smokers); 6.8+/- 2.6, 2.35+/- 0.69 and 0.46+/- 0.13 (non-smokers). The work-related uptake of PAHs was low in all pavers, although it was significantly greater in smokers than in non-smokers. The WPT asphalt workers complained of eye irritation and sore throat more than the pavers who had a much lower exposure to aldehydes and resin acids.  相似文献

Postmetamorphic South African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis) were exposed to a phytosterol mixture (ca. 80% β-sitosterol and less sitostanol, campesterol, and campestanol) for 14 days at 30 μg l−1 in a flow-through system. The effects of phytosterols (PS) on the plasma thyroid hormone (T3 and T4), testosterone, leptin-immunoreactive peptide and tissue glycogen concentrations were determined. The following enzyme activities were also analyzed from the liver and muscle: glycogen phosphorylase and lipase, and from the liver only: glucose-6-phosphatase. The plasma T3 concentration was lower in the PS-exposed female frogs. Both muscle lipase and glycogen phosphorylase activities were also lower in the PS-exposed animals. These results could indicate that the basal metabolic rate and locomotion activity of the frogs were decreased. The effects could not be attributed to the possible estrogenicity of the PS mixture. Further studies will be needed to evaluate the possible significance of these effects.  相似文献

To assess environmental risks of wood ash, limnological effects of ash application to the drainage basins of two small, humic lakes and one reference lake in southern Finland were examined in this three-year study. Treated areas corresponded to 12 and 19% of the total catchment and the amount of wood ash added was 6400 kg ha(-1). Immediate effects of wood ash on lake water were investigated in three tank experiments each lasting 1.5 wk. In tank experiments, addition of wood ash increased pH, alkalinity, conductivity, and Ca and P concentrations of humic lake water, while growth of phytoplankton decreased. After wood ash application to the subcatchments, pH, alkalinity, conductivity, and concentrations of K+, SO4(2-), and Cl- slightly increased, both in inflowing waters and in the lakes, but no increased leaching of Ca, N, or P from the treated subcatchments occurred. Phytoplankton biomass increased in both experimental lakes in comparison with the reference lake. In the lake with 19% application rate to the catchment, zooplankton biomass also increased. The results indicate that, over the short term, a small-scale ash treatment to a forested drainage basin will not necessarily cause significant changes in the water quality of boreal humic lakes, but at higher application rates, changes in water chemistry and biology are more evident.  相似文献

The main aim of this study was to develop a short questionnaire to assess work-related well-being from the organizational behaviour perspective. The short well-being questionnaire enables measuring longitudinal work-related well-being. Work-related well-being was assessed with a 147-item questionnaire covering both organizational and intrinsic factors of work-related well-being. The questionnaire consisted of 27 categories. The respondents were 114 women (65%) and 62 men (35%), mean age 39.2 years, in various occupations. From the extensive questionnaire a shorter questionnaire with 33 items was developed by principal component analysis. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure to test the sampling adequacy of 27 factor solutions varied from .62 to .91 and Cronbach’s a was .74–.94. Most K values of the shorter questionnaire were .50–.94 (p < .001). The reliability of the short version was comparable to that of the original questionnaire. The short one could also be suitable for Internet and mobile questionnaire applications.  相似文献

In this study, we have examined the relationships between the concentrations of ambient inhalable airborne fungi and pollen with PM10, PM2.5, ozone, organic carbon, selected trace metals (cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc), temperature, and relative humidity. The database was collected in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, during two consecutive years. Measurements of all environmental variables were performed at the same site continuously 5 days a week except during winter months. The airborne concentrations of biological and non-biological pollutants ranged as follows: total fungi: 184-16 979 spores m(-3); total pollen: 0-6692 pollen m(-3); PM10: 6.70-65.38 microg m(-3); PM2.5: 5.04-45.02 microg m(-3); and ozone: 2.54-64.17 ppb. Higher levels of total inhalable fungi and particulate matter were found during fall and summer months. In contrast, total pollen concentration showed elevated levels in spring. Peak concentrations of ozone were observed during summer and beginning of fall. Our study concluded that several types of inhalable airborne fungi and pollen, particulate matter, and ozone could be positively correlated as a result of the atmospheric temperature influence.  相似文献

To maximize reproductive success, reproductive behaviors have to be adjusted to environmental conditions. The breeding habitats of the threespine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus are presently changing in the Baltic Sea due to eutrophication and enhanced growth of filamentous green algae. Earlier studies show that high algae density reduces mate encounter rate and the intensity of selection on a few sexually selected traits, but the willingness of males to nest under the new conditions, and their investment into reproduction, have not been investigated. Here, we investigated the effect that increased algae growth has on nesting behavior of sticklebacks. We allowed males to build nests in aquaria with either a sparse or a dense vegetation structure and recorded male nest building behavior and nest characters. Males that nested in dense vegetation showed a longer latency before commencing nest building and also completed nest building later since there was no difference in time spent building. There was no effect of vegetation cover on nest characters. These results suggest that males prefer to nest in sparser vegetation, but that they eventually nest in dense vegetation if more open habitats are not available. This may arise from a negative effect of vegetation on visibility and mate encounter rate and thus on expected reproductive success. This implies that human-induced changes in the environment may force sticklebacks to breed in non-preferred habitats. Since the intensity of sexual selection is reduced in these areas, this could influence the further evolution of the population.  相似文献

In a recent publication, we discussed and presented a semi-empirical phytoplankton primary production model. In the present paper, our main purpose is to determine how the algorithms of a primary production model change when different values of specific absorption coefficient by phytoplankton are used in the model. A new version of our earlier model was quantified for this purpose. Differences between the previous and the new models are as follows: (a) the spectra of the specific absorption coefficient of light by phytoplankton differ in the new model from those used in the previous model, and (b) the quantification of the new model brings about a change in the parameters of the algorithm for the quantum yield of carbon fixation. We compared the results of primary production profiles obtained by the new model with those measured in situ and also with the values obtained by the previous model. Due to an adequate choice of quantification parameters, both the old and new models give rather close values of phytoplankton primary production. In the present study, the computational algorithms of both models have been automated. The resulting programs calculate the temporal–spatial variability of phytoplankton primary production, providing hourly values from morning to evening, daily sums, and monthly sums. The input of a table of initial parameters and selected depths produces rapid calculations of the model's results, which are given as vertical profiles of primary production and areal values.  相似文献
