Emissions, bioaccumulation and possible food chain enrichment of polychlorinated phenols, guaiacols and catechols have been studied by analyses of water, snow, ash, benthic animal, fish and bird samples in Finland. Seventeen individual compounds were analyzed using authentic reference model compounds and internal standard by GC/ECD. Although the enrichment potential of the studied compounds appeared to be lower than that of the chlorinated hydrocarbons, they proved to be very general pollutants and some of them showed specific bioaccumulation to certain species and high persistency thus forming environmental hazards.  相似文献

The village with its characteristic zones of different land use from the center to the periphery is a basic unit of Europe's cultural landscapes. However, loss of the authentic pre-industrial village structure characterized by a fine-grained structure of arable land and wooded grasslands is a threat to both cultural heritage and biodiversity in many rural landscapes. Therefore, it is important that the extent and rate of change of such authentic villages in a landscape can be monitored. We studied to what extent loss of authenticity with increasing time after abandonment can be assessed by quantitative analysis and visual interpretation of satellite images. The study was carried out in the Bieszczady Mountains, SE Poland in 1999. Using Landsat Thematic Mapper data from 1998, both the grain size of landscape elements (size of fields) and land-cover composition (encroachment of shrub and forest) were quantitatively described 6 type villages representing different stages of deterioration of the authentic village structure. Historical maps were used to delineate the border of the villages and the former extension of forest and open land was measured. The present land use and the degree of abandonment expressed as grain size and forest encroachment were mapped using satellite data. Deterioration occurred along 2 transformation paths: abandonment and ultimately becoming forest, or intensified agriculture, respectively. To validate these results we classified 22 other villages in a 1000 km2 area by visual interpretation of the original satellite images into 1 of 4 types. We then collected historical data on human population changes over the past six decades. The classification of village authenticity was clearly related to the rate of human population decline. We address the importance of validating and applying this approach for rapid assessment of the authenticity of cultural landscapes in European regions being subject to ongoing as well as expected future change, related to expansion of the European Union. Finally, we argue that the village represents a scale at which integration of natural and social sciences is possible.  相似文献

This study examines the effects of exhaust gas exposure on the epistomatal wax structure and mesophyll ultrastructure in needles of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) seedlings. Stomatal diffusive resistance was also measured. Two independent exhaust gas fumigations were performed: 100 and 200 ppb measured as NO(x), for 10 days and 50, 100 and 200 ppb NO(x) for 19 days. The obstructive effect of exhaust gas exposure on epistomatal wax tubules was apparent. The stomata became covered by flat and solid wax resulting from the structural degradation of the wax crystalloids. Increasing the exhaust gas concentration in the chamber atmosphere exacerbated the degradation of the wax structure. Exhaust gas exposure induced aggregation and electron translucence of plastoglobuli, swelling of thylakoids, increase of cytoplasmic lipids and slight increase of vesiculation of cytoplasm in mesophyll cells of current and previous year needles. These changes were exemplified in current year needles. Damage to the epicuticular waxes and mesophyll ultrastructure of spruce needles most likely reflects the NO(x) and volatile hydrocarbon fraction. The alterations in epicuticular waxes and mesophyll ultrastructure can be related to accelerated senescence of the youngest, photosynthetically active, needle generation. The exhaust gas also resulted in decreased diffusive stomatal resistance at night which indicates that the exhaust gas exposure disturbed the gas exchange of spruce seedlings. The results show that even relatively short-term exposure to realistic concentrations of exhaust gas in the atmosphere can induce rather severe injuries to the needle surface structure as well as ultrastructure at the cellular level.  相似文献

This paper provides results of ozone flux density measurements above a permanent grassland ecosystem as they relate to an establishment of air quality guidelines or standards. Using a resistance analogue, the product of zone concentration measured at a standard measurement height and the conductivity of the atmosphere reflect the maximum possible ozone flux density towards the envelope of the plants. In other words, this product can be regarded as the ozone exposure potential of the atmosphere for plants. It could be shown that ozone concentrations between 100 and 180 microg m(-3) are likely to have a great phytotoxic potential and are more important than concentrations greater than 180 microg m(-3). From the results presented one can deduce that the application of dose-response relationships based on chamber experiments to ambient conditions results in an overestimation of, for example, yield loses. Any guideline or standard has to take into account the influence of the atmospheric conductivity on the absorbed dose of ozone.  相似文献

Urea as a PCDD/F inhibitor in municipal waste incineration   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) from municipal waste incineration have been widely studied because of their extensive toxicity, and many efforts have been made to restrict their emissions. Although a number of chemical compounds have been shown in laboratory-scale tests to inhibit the formation of PCDD/Fs, few have been tested in pilot- or full-scale plants. This work evaluates the effect of urea as a PCDD/F inhibitor in a pilot-scale incinerator that uses refuse-derived fuel (RDF). The decomposition of urea under the test conditions was also studied using detailed kinetic modeling. An aqueous solution of urea was injected into the flue gas stream after the furnace at approximately 730 degrees C, with varied urea concentrations and flue gas residence times used between the furnace and the sampling point. The results demonstrate that urea can successfully inhibit PCDD/F formation in waste incineration if concentrations and injection points are properly adjusted. The kinetic model showed that urea can be rapidly decomposed under appropriate flue gas conditions, indicating that in addition to the urea molecule itself, decomposition products of urea can also be responsible for the reduction of PCDD/F production during incineration.  相似文献

Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) plants were exposed to simulated ozone (O(3)) episodes (7 h day(-1) for 7 days) at maximum concentrations of 120, 180 and 240 microg m(-3) O(3), in comparison to a charcoal-filtered air control. Fumigations were conducted in four closed chambers placed in a climate room. Exposures took place prior to inoculation of the plants with six different facultative leaf pathogens. On wheat, significant enhancement of leaf attack by Septoria nodorum Berk. and S. tritici Rob. ex Desm. appeared, particularly on the older leaves and at the highest level of O(3). The same was true for Gerlachia nivalis W. Gams et E. Müll/Fusarium culmorum (W.F.Sm.) Sacc. on wheat and net blotch (Drechslera teres (Sacc.) Shoem.) or G. nivalis leaf spots on barley. Disease development was promoted both on leaves with and without visible injury following exposure to O(3). Sporulation of the two Septoria species increased at 120 and 180 microg m(-3) O(3); however, it was reduced to the level of the control, if 240 microg m(-3) were applied. No significant effects of predisposition were observed with Bipolaris sorokiniana (Sacc.) Shoem. (syn. Helminthosporium sativum Pamm., King et Bakke), the causal agent of spot blotch, neither on wheat nor on barley. Doses and peak concentrations applied in the experiments were in good agreement with measurements of ambient ozone in Southern Lower Saxony, FRG. Six years' ozone data (1984-1989) revealed the annual occurrence of between 3 and 11 ozone episodes with potentially harmful effects on cereals (three or more consecutive 'ozone days' with 8-h means above 80 microg m(-3)). The frequency of ozone episodes followed by weather periods favourable for infections by facultative pathogens was higher in years with low O(3) pollution than in ozone-rich years, and varied between one and five cases per season. The number of ozone days during the main growing season of cereals (1 April until 31 August) varied from 25 in 1984 to 98 in 1989. However, only 7.9% of ozone days during the 6 years examined were concurrent with weather conditions suitable for fungal infections. It is concluded that the majority of leaf infections in the field happens under low-level concentrations of photooxidants.  相似文献

Norway spruce saplings [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] were exposed during four growing seasons to different ozone treatments in open-top chambers: charcoal filtered air (CF), non-filtered air (NF) and non-filtered air with extra ozone (NF+, 1.4xambient concentrations). The CF and NF+ ozone treatments were combined with phosphorous deficiency and drought stress treatments. The total biomass of the trees was harvested at different intervals during the experimental period. The ozone uptake to current-year needles of the Norway spruce saplings was estimated using a multiplicative stomatal conductance simulation model. There was a highly significant correlation between the reduction of total biomass and the estimated cumulative ozone uptake, which did not vary when different thresholds were applied for the rate of ozone uptake. The reduction of the total biomass was estimated to 1% per 10 mmol m(-2) cumulated ozone uptake, on a projected needle area basis.  相似文献

Measurement of the deposition of sedimenting particles requires a sampling device, which avoids simultaneous deposition of gases and aerosols to the collection surface. A sampler constructed for the purpose of collecting rain and sedimenting particles is described and characterized in detail, in particular with regard to its collection efficiency for rain. Its collection properties for gases and aerosols are shown to be negligible. From two years of sampling at different heights it was found that resuspension of particles and co-condensation of gases near the plant canopy may lead to a major overestimation of bulk deposition. As a consequence, the extension towards the canopy of the constant flux layer for sedimenting particles has to be determined experimentally. Bulk deposition of sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, lead, copper, cadmium, manganese, iron, ammonium, nitrate, phosphate, sulfate, total sulfur and chloride at Braunschweig-V?lkenrode, Southeast Lower Saxony, Germany, were recorded for six years. During this period a considerable decrease was observed in the deposition of lead, cadmium, nitrate, sulfate and total sulfur.  相似文献

Biodegradable polymers are designed to resist a number of environmental factors during use, but to be biodegradable under disposal conditions. The biodegradation of polylactide (PLLA) was studied at different elevated temperatures in both aerobic and anaerobic, aquatic and solid state conditions. In the aerobic aquatic headspace test the mineralisation of PLLA was very slow at room temperature, but faster under thermophilic conditions. The clear effect of temperature on the biodegradability of PLLA in the aquatic tests indicates that its polymer structure has to be hydrolysed before microorganisms can utilise it as a nutrient source. At similar elevated temperatures, the biodegradation of PLLA was much faster in anaerobic solid state conditions than in aerobic aquatic conditions. The behaviour of PLLA in the natural composting process was similar to that in the aquatic biodegradation tests, biodegradation starting only after the beginning of the thermophilic phase. These results indicate that PLLA can be considered as a compostable material, being stable during use at mesophilic temperatures, but degrading rapidly during waste disposal in compost or anaerobic treatment facilities.  相似文献

Natural phenolic monomers are ubiquitous in the environment and are involved in the stabilization of atmospheric carbon and the transformation of xenobiotics. Investigations on the stabilization of phenolic carbons and their environmental fate are hampered by the unavailability of commercial [13C]- and [14C]-labeled phenols. Here we report the complete chemical synthesis of the lignin and humus structural monomers p-coumaric, ferulic, and caffeic acids, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, protocatechualdehyde, vanillin, catechol, and guaiacol, uniformly [13C]- or [14C]-labeled in the aromatic ring, starting from commercially available [U-ring-13C]- or [U-ring-14C]-labeled phenol. The synthesis of these compounds involved selective ortho-hydroxylation of the aromatic ring, Friedel-Crafts alkylation, and Knoevenagel condensation. [U-ring-13C]- or [U-ring-14C]-p-coumaric acid was synthesized via p-hydroxybenzaldehyde with a 75% yield with respect to phenol. Synthesis of [U-ring-13C]- or [U-ring-14C]-ferulic acid, consisting of six single steps via guaiacol and vanillin, had an overall yield of up to 45%. Uniformly ring-labeled caffeic acid was synthesized either via catechol and protocatechualdehyde in five single steps, yielding [U-ring-14C]-caffeic acid with a 37% yield, or via guaiacol, vanillin, and ferulic acid in seven steps, yielding [U-ring-13C]-caffeic acid with an 18% yield. Ferulic acid, [14C]-labeled at beta-C of the propenoic side chain, was synthesized from [2-14C]-malonic acid under Knoevenagel conditions with a 67% yield with respect to malonic acid. Demethylation of the [beta-14C]-ferulic acid with BBr3 in CH3CN resulted in [beta-14C]-caffeic acid with a 62% yield. All [U-ring-13C]-labeled phenolic products were analyzed by 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-NMR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).  相似文献
