Human–elephant conflict is an issue of great concern regarding the growing competition between people and wildlife for food and shelter throughout Asia and Africa. The situation the Asian elephant faces is much critical. According to IUCN (Big hopes for endangered Asian Elephants, News Release, Gland, 2006), one of the prime factors to the decline of elephant population in India is the increasing trend in human–elephant conflict. Barjora block of Bankura district in West Bengal is one of the severe conflict prone zones in West Bengal, where elephant raid in every year has now become an inevitable phenomenon. As a result, crop damage, infrastructural damages, disturbances of daily activities, occurrence of human death and injuries have no doubt annihilated and frustrated the social fabric of life. This paper is an empirical attempt to address various consequences of human–elephant encounters which have an adverse impact on social, economic as well as the cultural life of the people. Instead of pursuing some traditional mitigation techniques, we argued much on understanding peoples’ perception to explore some sustainable mitigation measures to ensure the interest of both human and elephant and also to safeguard ecological integrity.  相似文献

The Central Indian Highland landscape (CIHL) represents a complex, diverse, and highly human-modified system. Nearly half the landscape is cropland, yet it hosts 21 protected areas surrounded and connected by forests. Changing farming practices with increasing access to irrigation might alter this intensifying landscape in the near future particularly in light of weather variability. We analyzed a decade of remote sensing data for cropping patterns and climatic factors combined with census data for irrigation and demographic factors to understand winter cropping trajectories in the CIHL. We quantified ‘productive cropped area’ (PCA), defined as the area with planted crop that is green at the peak of the winter growing season. We find three primary trajectories in PCA—increasing, fluctuating, and decreasing. The most dominant trend is fluctuating PCA in two-thirds of the districts, ranging from ~2.11 million to ~3.73 million ha between 2001 and 2013, which is associated with village-level access to irrigation and local labor dynamics. In 58 % of all districts, clay soils were associated with winter cropping (p < 0.05). Increasing irrigation is associated with increased winter PCA in most (94 %) districts (p < 0.00001). We find strong negative association between PCA and land surface temperature (LST) in most (66 %) districts (p < 0.01). LST closely corresponds to daytime mean air temperature (p < 0.001) for available meteorological stations. Fine-scale meteorological and socioeconomic data, however, are needed to further disentangle impacts of these factors on PCA in this landscape.  相似文献

Thermocatalytic degradation of high density polyethylene (HDPE) was carried out using acid activated fire clay catalyst in a semi batch reactor. Thermal pyrolysis was performed in the temperature range of 420–500 °C. The liquid and gaseous yields were increased with increase in temperature. The liquid yield was obtained 30.1 wt% with thermal pyrolysis at temperature of 450 °C, which increased to 41.4 wt% with catalytic pyrolysis using acid activated fire clay catalyst at 10 wt% of catalyst loading. The composition of liquid products obtained by thermal and catalytic pyrolysis was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and compounds identified for catalytic pyrolysis were mainly paraffins and olefins with carbon number range of C6–C18. The boiling point was found in the range of commercial fuels (gasoline, diesel) and the calorific value was calculated to be 42 MJ/kg.  相似文献

There is a growing concern over the potential accumulation of trace element concentration in groundwater of coastal aquifer owing seawater encroachment in the last several decades. A total of 29 groundwater samples collected from Pesarlanka Island, Krishna delta, Andhra Pradesh, India were analyzed for 13 trace elements (B, V, Mn, Fe, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Sr, Cd, Ba, and Pb) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The results reveal that B, Fe, Ni, As, Sr, and Pb vary from 11.22 to 710.2, 1.25 to 684.6, 0.02 to 37.33, 27.8 to 282.3, 164.1 to 7,009, and 1.97 to 164.4 μg/l, respectively. Ba, Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, V, and Zn are almost within permissible limits for drinking water, but As, Fe, Mn, Pb, B, and Sr are above the permissible limit. The toxic element Pb is 1.64 times more than the maximum permissible limits of drinking water. The minimum value of As is also 2.78 times more, whereas the maximum is 28.2 times the permissible limit. The spatial distributions of alkaline earths (Sr, Ba), transition metals (V, Co, Ni, Fe), metallic elements (Cu, Pb), and (As) were found in considerable variation in the entire Island. Good cross-correlations were found between As, B, Co, and Sr with total dissolved solids and among other trace elements such as B, As, Co, and Sr. The variability observed within the groundwater samples is closely connected to the sea spray input; hence, it is primarily a consequence of geographical and meteorological factors, such as distance from the ocean and time of year. The trace element levels, in particular those of heavy metals, are very low, suggesting an origin from natural sources rather than from anthropogenic contamination. A few trace elements (Sr and B) are found as sensitive parameters responding to changes in fresh to saline groundwater environment. The highly elevated trace elements in this area which may be attributed to marine sediments or death and decay of plants are presented in this paper.  相似文献

The present study investigated the chemical composition of wet atmospheric precipitation over Dhanbad, coal city of India. The precipitation samples were collected on event basis for three years (July 2003 to October 2005) at Central Mining Research Institute. The precipitation samples were analyzed for pH, conductivity, major anions (F, Cl, NO3, SO4) and cations (Ca, Mg, Na, K, NH4). The pH value varied from 4.01 to 6.92 (avg. 5.37) indicating acidic to alkaline nature of rainwater. The pH of the rainwater was found well above the reference pH (5.6), showing alkalinity during the non-monsoon and early phase of monsoon, but during the late phase of monsoon, pH tendency was towards acidity (<5.6~pH) indicating the non-availability of proper neutralizer for acidic ions. The observed acidic events at this site were 91, (n = 162) accounting 56% for the entire monitoring months. The (NO3 + Cl)/SO4 ratio in majority of samples was found below 1.0, indicating that the acidity is greatly influenced by SO4. The calculated ratio of (Ca + NH4)/(NO3 + SO4) ranges between 0.42–5.13 (average 1.14), however in most of the samples, the ratio is greater than unity (>1.0) indicating that Ca and NH4 play an important role in neutralization of acidic ions in rainwater. Ca and SO4 dominate the bulk ionic deposition and these two ions along with NH4 accounts 63% of the annual ionic deposition.  相似文献

A novel, sensitive, and rapid UV spectrophotometric and colorimetric method was developed for estimation of etizolam (ETZ) in bulk and tablet. The UV spectrophotometric method (method I) is based on quantitative estimation of ETZ using 0.1N NaOH as the solvent which exhibits maximal absorption at 378 nm. Colorimetric methods (method II and III) were based on the formation of color complex in association with ions between basic nitrogen of the drug with methyl orange (MO) and bromocresol green (BCG) in acidic medium. The formed color complexes were quantitatively extracted with chloroform and measured at 509 nm for Drug–MO complex and at 442 nm for Drug–BCG complex, respectively. Beer's law was obeyed over the linear ranges 2–16 µg/ml (method I), 5–45 µg/ml (method II), and 2–20 µg/ml (method III). The correlation coefficient (r2) for ETZ was 0.999, 0.997, and 0.998 for method I, II, and III, respectively. All methods were successfully applied for the assay of the drug in tablet. The % purity was found to be 98.52 (method I), 98.72 (method II), and 99.18 (method III). These developed methods were fully validated with % relative standard deviation (RSD) for accuracy less than 2 for all methods. The % RSD of the intra-day and inter-day variations was found to be less than 2%. The limit of detection and quantitation were as follows: 0.108 µg/ml and 0.327 µg/ml (method I), 0.24 µg/ml and 0.75 µg/ml (method II), 0.1 µg/ml and 0.5 µg/ml (method III) indicating marked method sensitivity. Empirical evidence from all three methods concludes that developed methods are simple, sensitive, and reliably validated for useful routine quality control analysis of ETZ.  相似文献

Groundwater in a tannery belt in Southern India is being polluted by the discharge of untreated effluents from 80 operating tanneries. Total dissolved solids and chloride (Cl) measurements in open wells in the tannery cluster vary from 27,686 to 39,100 and 12,000 to 13,652 mg/l, respectively. A mass transport model was constructed using Visual MODFLOW Premium 4.4 software to investigate the chloride migration in an area of 75.56 km2. Input to the chloride migration model was a groundwater flow model that considered steady and transient conditions. This model was calibrated with field observations; and sensitivity analysis was carried out whereby model parameters, viz., conductivity, dispersivity, and source concentration were altered slightly, and the effect on calibration statistics was evaluated. Results indicated that hydraulic conductivity played a more sensitive role than did dispersivity. The Cl migration was mainly through advection rather than dispersion. It was found that even if the pollutant load reduced to 50% of the present level, the Cl concentration in groundwater, even after 6 years, would not be reduced to the permissible limit of drinking water in the tannery belt.  相似文献

Lakshadweep is a group of 36 coral islands scattered in the Arabian Sea off the western coast of India. On such small tiny islands, groundwater is the only source of fresh water for the islanders. Due to the growing population on these islands, demand for fresh water is also increasing and on the other side the peculiar hydrologic, geologic and geomorphic features restrict the availability of groundwater. Therefore, a proper understanding of the groundwater condition is important in order to meet this increasing demand and also to formulate future development and management strategies. Detailed hydrogeological, geophysical and hydrochemical studies have been carried out to identify potential fresh groundwater resources and quantify vulnerable parts of Andrott Island, Union Territory of Lakshadweep. Systematic collection and analysis of hydrological, geophysical and hydrochemical data reveal that fresh groundwater is only available between 2.5 to 5.0 m depths and provide an early sign of deterioration in groundwater quality in the peripheral parts of eastern and western coasts of this island. It suggests immediate measures for arresting the deterioration in groundwater quality as well as augmentation for restoration of aquifer in some parts of the island.  相似文献
