The purpose of our study is to show how ecologists' interpretation of habitat selection by grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) is altered by the scale of observation and also how management questions would be best addressed using predetermined scales of analysis. Using resource selection functions (RSF) we examined how variation in the spatial extent of availability affected our interpretation of habitat selection by grizzly bears inhabiting mountain and plateau landscapes. We estimated separate models for females and males using three spatial extents: within the study area, within the home range, and within predetermined movement buffers. We employed two methods for evaluating the effects of scale on our RSF designs. First, we chose a priori six candidate models, estimated at each scale, and ranked them using Akaike Information Criteria. Using this method, results changed among scales for males but not for females. For female bears, models that included the full suite of covariates predicted habitat use best at each scale. For male bears that resided in the mountains, models based on forest successional stages ranked highest at the study-wide and home range extents, whereas models containing covariates based on terrain features ranked highest at the buffer extent. For male bears on the plateau, each scale estimated a different highest-ranked model. Second, we examined differences among model coefficients across the three scales for one candidate model. We found that both the magnitude and direction of coefficients were dependent upon the scale examined; results varied between landscapes, scales, and sexes. Greenness, reflecting lush green vegetation, was a strong predictor of the presence of female bears in both landscapes and males that resided in the mountains. Male bears on the plateau were the only animals to select areas that exposed them to a high risk of mortality by humans. Our results show that grizzly bear habitat selection is scale dependent. Further, the selection of resources can be dependent upon the availability of a particular vegetation type on the landscape. Summary The water-soluble antioxidant, L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C), proved elicitory to alterable anti-herbivory inGlycine max againstTrichoplusia ni larvae. Elicitation by vitamin C was influenced especially by dose, time after elicitation and space in the plant. Results allow an analogy between antioxidant and herbivory elicitation. Elicitation apparently involves a sulfhydryl-protein-dependent redox mechanism which can be significantly affected by antioxidants. Findings would also support a proposed common redox-based mechanism, involving the plasma membrane, for communication between plant and animal cells and their environments. 相似文献

Measurements of total, chemical and biological oxygen consumption were made at 5 stations situated between 22 and 35 m in Lindåspollene, Norway. The results from each station did not reveal any clear seasonal variation, but the pooled data showed highest values in September, and lowest in January. Problems concerning interpretion of results of biological and chemical O2 consumption obtained by a poisoning technique (using formaldehyde) are discussed. The time-weighted mean of the annual total O2 consumption based on all stations was 10.67 ml m-2 h-1 or 92.2 l m-2 year-1. This corresponds to a consumption of 34.5g C m-2 year-1 (respiratory quotient=0.7), or 34 to 37% of the net annual primary production of phytoplankton. 相似文献

Summary Reduced forage intake by males is generally believed to coincide with the peak of rutting activities in many ungulates. Activity budgets of bull moose (Alces alces) in Denali National Park and Preserve (DNPP) and Isle Royale National Park (IRNP) were analyzed to assess: (1) if time spent foraging decreased during the rut; (2) the timing of reduced forage intake; (3) whether there was variation in feeding time among bulls of varying size; and (4) the proximate mechanism and adaptive value of reduced forage intake. Time spent feeding by bull moose began to decrease around 1 September: large bulls completely ceased feeding for approximately 2 weeks, with median dates of feeding cessation at 18 and 20 September for IRNP and DNPP, respectively. Small bulls fed at reduced rates, but did not cease feeding. Although large bulls in both study sites spent large amounts of time engaged in social behavior during the period of appetite suppression, much of their active time was also spent standing inattentive, i.e., engaged in no activity (45.5% in IRNP, 29.8% in DNPP), suggesting that a constraint in time budgets did not limit opportunities to feed. Forage intake reduction is more likely mediated through a physiological mechanism. Feeding cessation did not coincide with the peak of the rut: at DNPP the median date of feeding cessation was significantly earlier than the median date of breeding behavior and fighting. The timing of feeding cessation coincided with that of scent-urination at both study sites, raising the possibility that appetite suppression may be a byproduct of physiological processes associated with chemical communication. 相似文献

The effects of crude oil and three oil spill dispersants (Corexit 9600, 9550 and 7664) on nitrogenase activity in the cyanobacteria Nostoc sp. were examined. The addition of oil to Nostoc sp. cultures resulted in a catastrophic decline in nitrogenase activity with activity ceasing 7 h after treatment. The addition of a dispersant with the oil did not ameliorate this effect. Cultures exposed to high concentrations of dispersants showed lower rates on nitrogenase activity than untreated cultures. However, it is unlikely that dispersant concentrations of this magnitude would occur in the field. At the lowest concentration tested, which approximates the manufacturer's recommended application rate, the effects of the dispersant appear to be negligible. 相似文献

A novel technique for the rapid screening of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in atmospheric particulates is presented. Two-step laser desorption laser photoionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry was used to assay for PAHs in cloud-water particulates collected near Peebles in southern Scotland. The particulates were examined in situ on their host filters removing the requirement for time-consuming sample extraction and separation. The mass spectra obtained from a single filter are shown. The principal components of these are assigned to PAH contaminants and phthalate contaminants. A distribution of PAHs was observed using 193 nm laser photoionisation. The mass spectrum obtained on using 248 nm laser photoionisation exhibits a different intensity distribution demonstrating an ionisation wavelength dependence. The utility of the technique for rapid screening of PAHs and other polyaromatic species is discussed. 相似文献

Previously published reports have indicated that idiopathic polyhydramnios may be associated with trisomies 18 and 21 and that chromosomal analysis is indicated. Furthermore, the natural history and fetal outcome of polyhydramnios diagnosed in early gestation have not been well delineated. We identified 138 pregnancies with polyhydramnios prior to 26 weeks' gestation. Of 131 complete cases, 21 were diagnosed as severe, 18 as moderate, and 92 as mild polyhydramnios. Congenital abnormalities were noted in 18 of 21 severe cases (86 per cent). Two of the remaining three cases were twin-to-twin transfusion. Thirteen of 18 cases with moderate polyhydramnios (72 per cent) were associated with anomalies; six of the remaining cases were twin-to-twin transfusion. Sixteen of 92 cases of mild polyhydramnios (17 per cent) were associated with congenital abnormalities. In 69 of 76 cases of mild hydramnios not associated with anomalies (91 per cent), the hydramnios resolved prior to delivery. Only 2 of 16 (13 per cent) associated with anomalies resolved. In 4 of 5 cases (80 per cent) with moderate hydramnios and no anomalies, the amniotic fluid volume was normal on subsequent ultrasound. No case of moderate polyhydramnios associated with anomalies or maternal conditions nor any case of severe polyhydramnios resolved. There were seven cases of chromosomal abnormalities in this series; all were associated with sonographic findings in addition to the presence of polyhydramnios. On the basis of these data, we doubt the benefit of amniocentesis following the early diagnosis of idiopathic polyhydramnios in the absence of other ultrasound findings. 相似文献

Nutrient transport from forest ecosystems is strongly regulated by the availability of anions in soil solution. Each of the major anions in forest soil solutions has some unique properties which affect its production and mobility. The production of bicarbonate, one of the most common anions, is regulated by soil CO2 pressure and pH. The mobility of phosphate is most strongly affected by adsorption reactions. The mobility of nitrate is regulated almost solely by biological processes, whereas chloride is relatively uninvolved in either biological or inorganic chemical reactions. Sulfate is intermediate, being involved in both biological and inorganic chemical reactions.Knowing these properties of the major anions, it is possible to assess and to predict the effects of several diverse site manipulations on soil leaching rates. Case studies from a site in Washington State consistently demonstrate the importance of accounting for bicarbonate transformations following site manipulations.Although organic anions are frequently dominant in cold-region soil solutions, very little information on the complex factors affecting their mobilities is available. Further research into organic anion mobility and futher attention to bicarbonate mobility should add greatly to the body of knowledge on nutrient transport processes in forest soils. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Cone-penetrometer testing and computer modeling were utilized to investigate factors controlling fresh-water lens formation at Grand Isle, Louisiana. Measurements of tip resistance, sleeve friction, and electrical conductivity were recorded with depth to permit classification of sediment type and to determine thickness of the fresh-water lens and transition zone. Cone-penetrometer testing provided virtually continuous determinations of change in sediment type and ground-water salinity at a resolution rarely achieved using conventional drilling and water sampling techniques. Three sand bodies are present, each separated by a clay layer. The fresh-water lens is thinner in the center of the island than on the flanks. Fresh-water lens thickness is limited by a clay layer which prohibits downward movement of significant volumes fresh water. The transition zone from fresh water to salt water varies in thickness, being thinnest near the Gulf of Mexico and thickest where silt and clay interfinger with the upper sand. Both the thickness of the fresh-water lens and the shape of the transition zone differ from that predicted by theoretical models. Calibration of STJTRA, a variable-density solute-transport model, indicates that permeability variations are the dominant control on formation of the fresh-water lens. 相似文献
