IntroductionData availability has forced researchers to examine separately the role of alcohol among drivers who crashed and drivers who did not crash. Such a separation fails to account fully for the transition from impaired driving to an alcohol-related crash.MethodIn this study, we analyzed recent data to investigate how traffic-related environments, conditions, and drivers’ demographics shape the likelihood of a driver being either involved in a crash (alcohol impaired or not) or not involved in a crash (alcohol impaired or not). Our data, from a recent case–control study, included a comprehensive sampling of the drivers in nonfatal crashes and a matched set of comparison drivers in two U.S. locations. Multinomial logistic regression was applied to investigate the likelihood that a driver would crash or would not crash, either with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) = .00 or with a BAC ≥ .05.ConclusionsTo our knowledge, this study is the first to examine how different driver characteristics and environmental factors simultaneously contribute to alcohol use by crash-involved and non-crash-involved drivers. This effort calls attention to the need for research on the simultaneous roles played by all the factors that may contribute to motor vehicle crashes. 相似文献

Temperature and mitochondrial plasticity are well studied in fishes, but little is known about this relationship in invertebrates.
The effects of habitat temperature on mitochondrial ultrastructure were examined in three con-familial limpets from the Antarctic
(Nacella concinna), New Zealand (Cellana ornata), and Singapore (Cellana radiata). The effects of seasonal changes in temperature were also examined in winter and summer C. ornata. Stereological methods showed that limpet pedal myocytes were 1–2 orders of magnitude smaller in diameter (≈3.5 μm) than
in vertebrates, and that the diameter did not vary as a function of temperature. Mitochondrial volume density (Vv(mt,f)) was approximately 2–4 times higher in N. concinna (0.024) than in the other species (0.01 and 0.006), which were not significantly different from each other. Mitochondrial
cristae surface density (Sv(im,mt)) was significantly lower in summer C. ornata (24.1 ± 0.50 μm2 μm−3) than both winter C. ornata (32.3 ± 0.95 μm2 μm−3) and N. concinna (34.3 ± 4.43 μm2 μm−3). The surface area of mitochondrial cristae per unit fibre volume was significantly higher in N. concinna, due largely to the greater mitochondrial volume density. These results and previous studies indicate that mitochondrial
proliferation in the cold is a common, but not universal response by different species from different thermal habitats. Seasonal
temperature decreases on the other hand, leading preferentially to an increase in cristae surface density. Stereological measures
also showed that energetic reserves, i.e. lipid droplets and glycogen in the pedal muscle changed greatly with season and

The ubiquity in effects and complexity of modern environmental issues requires careful consideration of focused research to insure that answers to key policy oriented questions are obtained. Broad-based, unstructured research programs have proven to be inefficient instruments for characterizing risks from environmental stress. Both the expense and the importance of timeliness of information preclude a traditional “bottom-up” approach to research. Instead, a more “top-down” organized approach that links the natural and socioeconomic sciences has advantages to support environmental risk assessment and research prioritization of climate alteration. Early examples of analysis using an integrating framework for risk assessment focus on the need for research on human interactions and the environmental damage function in addition to the basic earth sciences. Nonlinearities in environmental impact of climate change, and uncertainties in the extent of growth of energy efficiencies, are seen to be key unknowns in the risk assessment of climate alternatives. To date, earth science research has not been structured well for environmental risk assessment of the climate change question. The U.S. national research program aimed at risk assessment of climate alteration is examined as an example. The examination suggests that the present conceptual plan falls short of an optimum structure derived from exploitation of an integrating framework, even though it is rich in scientific strength and diversity. To strengthen its public value and accessibility, the research program could account in its planning for prioritized needs defined by an integrating analysis for risk assessment and management. 相似文献

The primary objectives of this study were to examine characteristics of drivers involved in fatal accidents and to determine if those drivers could be distinguished from California's general driving population on the basis of prior driving record. A sample of drivers involved in 1970–1971 fatal accidents was analyzed and compared to a sample of drivers from the general driving population during the same time period. Drivers who had been drinking prior to the accident, who were considered at-fault for the accident, or whose accident occurred at night were found to have worse prior driving records than other fatal accident-involved drivers. The results also indicated that, as a whole, drivers involved in fatal accidents had worse violation and/or accident records, as well as different demographic and license characteristics than drivers in the general population. The classification functions derived to predict fatal accidents, however, did not differ greatly from regression equations that have been constructed to predict total accidents. The functional response of the aspects of reproductive success of a southwestern Baltic population of Acartia tonsa (Copepoda: Calanoida) was quantified in the laboratory using wide ranges in temperatures and salinities. Specifically, daily
egg production (EP, # female−1 day−1) was determined for 4 or 5 days at 18 different temperatures between 5 and 34°C and the time course and success of hatching
were evaluated at 10 different temperatures between 5 and 23°C. The effect of salinity (0 to 34 psu) on egg hatching success
was also examined. The highest mean rates of EP were observed between 22 and 23°C (46.8–50.9 eggs female−1 day−1). When studied at 18 psu, hatching success of eggs increased with increasing temperature and was highest (92.2%) at 23°C.
No hatching was observed for eggs incubated at low temperatures (≤12°C) that were produced by females acclimated to temperatures
≤10°C indicating a possible thermal threshold between 10.0 and 13.0°C below which only the production of diapause (or low
quality) eggs exists in this population. When tested at 18°C, the hatching success of eggs incubated at 15 different salinities
increased asymptotically with increasing salinity and was maximal (81.4–84.5%) between 17 and 25 psu. The high reproductive
success observed over wide ranges in temperatures and salinities in this Baltic population demonstrates one of the mechanisms
responsible for the cosmopolitan distribution of this species within productive, estuarine and marine habitats. 相似文献

A study to determine the effects of various concentrations of chlorine on the productivity of entrained marine phytoplankton was carried out at a nuclear power station on northeastern Long Island Sound, USA. Chlorine is a biocide used to control the growth of marine fouling organisms on the walls of many power station cooling systems. Chlorine concentrations considerably below those required to eliminate fouling organisms produced large decreases in the productivity of entrained phytoplankton. Generally, between 0.25 and 0.75 ppm residual chlorine at the cooling water discharge, continuously applied, is required to eliminate fouling organisms. At the highest chlorine concentration tested, 0.4 ppm residual at discharge (addition of chlorine at 1.2 ppm at cooling water intake), there was an 83% decrease in productivity as compared with the productivity at the intake. Productivity measurements were made at 6 other continuously applied chlorine concentrations. At the lowest concentration tested, too low to measure with our analytical method (addition of chlorine at 0.1 ppm at the intake), we measured a production decrease of 79%. Thus, a decrease in chlorination dosage of over an order of magnitude produced essentially no reduction in the damage done to entrained phytoplankton. Application of chlorine intermittently produced somewhat less of a decrease in primary productivity. When there was no chlorine addition during the period of study, there was essentially no effect on productivity.
