A comprehensive attempt has been made to evaluate the diurnal and spatial pattern of CO2 exchange between the atmosphere and water along the estuarine track of Indian Sundarbans during the two summer months, April and May, 2011. Rigorous field observations were carried out which included the hourly measurements of total alkalinity, pH, fugacity of CO2 in ambient air and water surface, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll a. The estuarine water was found rich in total alkalinity and was oversaturated with CO2 throughout the diurnal cycle in the two stations situated at the inner and middle estuary, respectively, whereas an entirely reverse situation was observed in the outer fringes. The fugacity of CO2 in water ranged from 152 to 657 μatm during the study period. The percentage of over-saturation in inner and middle estuary varied from 103 to 168 and 103 to 176 %, respectively, whereas the degree of under-saturation in the outer estuary lied between 40 and 99 %. Chlorophyll a concentrations were found higher in the outer estuary (12.3?±?2.2 mg?m?3) compared to the middle (6.4?±?0.6 mg?m?3) and inner parts (1.6?±?0.2 mg?m?3), followed by a similar decreasing pattern in nutrient availability from the outer to inner estuary. The sampling stations situated at the inner and middle estuary acted as a net source of 29.69 and 23.62 mg?CO2?m?2 day?1, respectively, whereas the outer station behaved as a net sink of ?33.37 mg?CO2 m?2 day?1. The study of primary production and community respiration further supports the heterotrophic nature of the estuary in the inner region while the outer periphery was marked by dominant autotrophic character. These contrasting results are in parity with the source characters of many inner estuaries and sinking characters of the outer estuaries situated at the distal continental shelf areas.  相似文献

Systematic screening of 45 soil fungi for degradation polyhydroxyalkanoic acids (PHAs) has led to the selection of 6 potent Aspergillus isolates belonging to A. flavus, A. oryzae, A. parasiticus, and A. racemosus. Degradation of PHAs as determined by tube assay method revealed that these Aspergillus spp. were more efficient in degrading poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB)] compared to copolymer of 3-hydroxybutyric acid and 3-hydroxyvaleric acid (P3HB-co-16% 3HV). Moreover, the extent of degradation in mineral base medium was much better than those in complex organic medium. For all the Aspergillus spp. tested, maximum degradation was recorded at a temperature of 37°C with significant inhibition of growth. The optimum pH range for degradation was 6.5–7.0 with degradation being maximum at pH 6.8. The extent of polymer degradation increased with increase in substrate concentration, the optimum concentration for most of the cultures being 0.4% and 0.2% (w/v) for P(3HB) and P(3HB-co-16%3HV) respectively. Supplementation of the degradation medium with additional carbon sources exerted significant inhibitory effect on both P(3HB) and P(3HB-co-16%3HV) degradation.  相似文献

Increased water use associated with rapid growth in the Las Vegas Valley has inadvertently led to the creation of unique wetland systems in Southern Nevada with an abundance of biological diversity. Constructed and naturally created wetlands in the Las Vegas Valley watershed were studied to characterize and understand their potential role for improving ecosystem services (i.e., water purification). Nutrient and metal removal was assessed at four sites including a natural urban runoff wetland, a constructed urban runoff wetland, a constructed wastewater wetland, and a natural urban runoff/wastewater wetland. Plant nutrient uptake was dependent on ambient nutrient concentrations in water and sediments of specific wetlands, irrespective of the type of plants present. Phosphorus was mostly concentrated in below-ground plant parts whereas nitrogen was concentrated in above-ground parts. As for metalloids, bulrushes were more efficient than cattails at taking up arsenic and selenium. Averaging all the wetland sites and plant species, total nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic and selenium removal was 924.2, 61.5, 0.30, and 0.38 kg/ha/year, respectively. Our findings suggest that natural and created wetland systems can improve water quality in the Las Vegas Valley watershed for some common pollutants, however, other measures are still needed to improve water quality below regulatory thresholds.  相似文献
