In order to examine the early life-history characteristics of tropical eels, otolith microstructure and microchemistry were examined in leptocephali of Anguilla bicolor pacifica (27.6-54.1 mm TL, n=20) and A. marmorata (22.0-47.3 mm TL, n=8) collected during a cruise in the western Pacific. A. bicolor pacifica occurred between 10°N and 15°N in the west and between 5°S and 10°N farther to the east. A. marmorata also occurred in two different latitudinal ranges in the Northern (15-16°N) and Southern Hemispheres (3-15°S) of the western Pacific. The increment widths in the otoliths of these leptocephali increased between the hatch check (0 days) and about an age of 30 days in both species, and then gradually decreased toward the otolith edge. Otolith Sr:Ca ratios showed a gradual increase from the otolith center to the edge. The ages of A. bicolor pacifica and A. marmorata leptocephali ranged from 40 to 128 days and from 38 to 99 days, respectively. Growth rates of A. bicolor pacifica and A. marmorata leptocephali ranged from 0.33 to 0.71 mm day-1 and from 0.45 to 0.63 mm day-1, respectively. These leptocephali had estimated growth rates that were spread out throughout most of the reported range of growth rates of the leptocephali of the temperate species, the Japanese eel and the Atlantic eels. Differences in the spatial distribution in relation to current systems, and the age and size compositions of the leptocephali of A. bicolor pacifica and A. marmorata suggested different spawning locations for these two species.  相似文献

A stow net (90 m2 opening) was used, at regular intervals between July 1989 and June 1993, to collect fish over ca. 4 h on both the flood and ebb tides at five sites distributed at regularly spaced distances throughout the Elbe Estuary. Overall, 53.4% of the species were marine, and some of these were abundant, e.g.Clupea harengus, Pleuronectes flesus, Pomatoschistus minutus, Merlangius merlangus and Sprattus sprattus. However, in terms of number of individuals, such species contributed only 9.1%, compared with 90.0% by anadromous species, which was predominantly due to exceptionally high catches of Osmerus eperlanus. The ichthyofaunal compositions on the flood and ebb tides were similar, even downstream where salinities change markedly during each tidal cycle. Although this is probably due in part to groups of fish being swept first upstream on the flood tide and then back downstream on the ebb tide, several species clearly tended to occupy particular regions of the estuary. Each year the species composition changed sequentially from the most downstream site (max. salinity=ca. 31.4‰) to the most upstream site (max. salinity=ca. 1.5‰), mainly as a result of a sequential decline in the number and abundance of marine species and a progressive increase in the contributions of both anadromous and freshwater species. However, the marine species diagnostic of differences in the compositions among regions varied between years. Thus, for example, the diagnostic species for the downstream sites were C. harengus and M. merlangus in 1990/1991 and S. sprattus in 1992/1993, reflecting differences in the recruitment strengths of these marine species in the two years. The ichthyofaunal composition exhibited pronounced annual cyclical changes in each region and thus occurred irrespective of whether or not the salinity in a region underwent pronounced changes during the year. This cyclicity was attributable to intra-annual variations in the times of recruitment of certain marine species, particularly in the downstream region, and to seasonal migrations of diadromous species into each region, as well as to the movements of freshwater species into the upstream region in winter and early spring. The Fleet (southern England) is a stable (ca. 5,000 years) coastal saline lagoon that supports a population of Alcyonidium resembling the common coastal epiphyte, Alcyonidium gelatinosum (L.). A combination of morphological, reproductive, and ecological characters was used to compare lagoonal and non-lagoonal proximate populations. Comparisons revealed a difference in the timing of spawning, considered to be related to the temporally restricted availability of viable substrata within the lagoonal basin. Allochronous spawning and spatial separation together suggest that the lagoonal taxon is reproductively isolated. The two populations were further compared with seven other coastal populations of Alcyonidium using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. The results confirm the individuality of the lagoonal taxon but also a close relationship with three A. gelatinosum populations. We present and consider four hypotheses that may account for the presence of this genetically distinct taxon: (1) diversification within the Fleet; (2) colonisation from another lagoon; (3) non-indigenous species status; and (4) introduction by shipping or other anthropogenically mediated dispersal mechanism. Significant diversification on the time scale involved has been demonstrated for isolated freshwater environments and, therefore, is feasible within a saline lagoon. Hypothesis 1 and, to a lesser extent, hypothesis 2 are consistent with the recognition of individual lagoons as 'biogeographic' islands of importance for their unique or characteristic biodiversity. The study also represents the first example of concordant morphological, reproductive, and genetic diversification in a marine bryozoan.  相似文献

Since its introduction to Nova Scotia in the early 1990s, the invasive green alga Codium fragile ssp. tomentosoides has spread rapidly to become a dominant and persistent component of seaweed assemblages in the rocky subtidal zone. To examine the potential of sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) to regulate Codium, and the potential of the alga to support urchin growth and reproduction, we fed urchins Codium and/or kelp (Laminaria spp., a high quality and preferred native food) in the laboratory for 11 months. Urchins showed a strong and active preference for kelp: they consumed more Laminaria than Codium (as dry weight) in single and mixed diet treatments. Urchins fed only Codium consumed 3.5 times more of the alga than those on a mixed diet, but did not increase their feeding rate in winter when kelp consumption was greatest. Laminaria was consumed at the same rate in single and mixed diets, indicating that the presence of an alternative food had no effect on kelp consumption. Survival and growth (change in test diameter) were lowest on the Codium diet, although the differences among diets were not statistically significant. Urchins on the Codium diet showed no gonadal production over the annual reproductive cycle, compared to a marked rise in gonad index on the Laminaria and mixed diets. Our results indicate that Codium is an unattractive, unpalatable and poor quality food, which is not readily consumed by urchins. Thus we predict that urchins at moderate densities will be much more likely to graze kelp than Codium in mixed stands, creating a mosaic of Codium patches and barren areas. At high densities, however, urchins are likely to destructively graze all seaweeds, although dense stands of the invasive alga may prolong the widespread formation of barrens.  相似文献

This study examined the occurrence and effects of inbreeding in the sessile, colonial hermaphrodite Celleporella hyalina. The results are discussed with regard to theoretical explanations for the prevalence of hermaphroditism in sessile clonal organisms. C. hyalina exhibited inbreeding depression at all stages, including the pre-zygotic. Outcrossing, sib and half-sib matings produced offspring but selfing did not. There was inbreeding depression in embryo production and survival. Inbred colonies showed slower growth and later maturation, with fewer reproductive zooids. The relative numbers of male and female zooids were affected by inbreeding; increased production of males is a sign of stress in C. hyalina. When mated with an outbred non-relative, inbred colonies had lower success both as males and as females in embryo production and offspring survivorship. The low survivorship of embryos fathered by inbred colonies is a clear effect of inbreeding on the F2 generation. These results indicate that C. hyalina is unlikely to inbreed in the wild, supporting the "space-limited" model of hermaphroditism for this species. This study indicates that hermaphroditism, by avoiding much of the cost of sex, can confer optimal reproductive fitness for sessile brooding animals in a space-limited habitat even in the absence of inbreeding.  相似文献

 A distinct smell of dimethylsulfide (DMS) was noted at the edge of the intertidal mudflat of Marennes-Oléron Bay, at the French Atlantic coast, where dense populations of the marine flatworm Convoluta roscoffensis Graff (Platyhelminthes: Turbellaria) were present. DMS is the cleavage product of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP). DMSP was shown to be present in high amounts in sediment containing the flatworm as well as in axenic cultures of the symbiotic alga Tetraselmis sp. that was isolated from the flatworm. In untreated sediment samples containing C. roscoffensis the concentration of DMS was as high as ∼55 μmol l−1 sediment, and in samples that were fixed with glutaraldehyde the concentration of DMS was even three orders of magnitude higher (∼66 mmol l−1 sediment). This rapid cleavage of DMSP to DMS in fixed samples was unexpected. Pure DMSP was stable in glutaraldehyde, and it was therefore concluded that a DMSP-lyase was responsible for cleavage in the field samples. The isolated symbiotic alga, Tetraselmis sp., did not show DMSP-lyase activity, indicating that DMSP-lyase may have been present in the flatworm, although the role of bacteria could not be excluded. The Chl a-specific DMSP content of C. roscoffensis (∼200 mmol g−1) was much higher than that of Tetraselmis sp. (∼30 mmol g−1). Possibly, DMSP was not only present in the symbiotic alga, but was also incorporated in the body tissue of the flatworm. It remains unclear what the function of DMSP is in C. roscoffensis. In Tetraselmis sp., but not in C. roscoffensis, DMSP increased with increasing salinity. It was concluded that salinity probably does not play an important role in the dynamics of DMSP and DMS in sediment containing C. roscoffensis. Electrophoresis was used to survey a number of enzymes for loci of potential value as stock markers in Chlamys opercularis (L.). Two loci, Pgi and Pgd, were then studied in larger samples from each of two localities around the Isle of Man. One Pgi allele was found to be restricted to a particular year-class in both populations. This was confirmed by subsequent studies of three further populations, in each of which the same allele occurred only in the one year-class. Otherwise, no significant differences in allele frequencies were found between year-classes or between populations in any of the samples used. From the results it is concluded that there is temporal variation in the sources of recruitment of C. opercularis stocks around the Isle of Man. Possible origins of larvae contributing to these stocks are discussed in the light of what is known of current circulation patterns in the northern Irish Sea.  相似文献

Summary The aim of the experiment was to test the hypothesis that pigeons depend on route- and/or site-specific airborne parameters to establish their position relative to the loft. Pigeons were transported to the release site with free access to the environmental air. They were then enclosed in large airtight containers filled with air from the release site and either transported via the loft to a release site in the opposite direction with respect to the loft (experimental birds) or via the loft back to the same site (control birds). Before release the pigeons (still inside the containers) were made anosmic by a local anesthetic applied to the olfactory membranes through the nostrils. Vanishing bearings of experimental birds were on the average in a direction opposite to home while the vanishing bearings of control birds were homeward oriented. For this initial orientation the pigeons seem to rely on airborne cues obtained at a site where they last had access to ambient air or cues obtained from the air inside the sealed containers. Irrespective of the treatment the bearings pooled with respect to north still show a residual orientation to the NE. There was no difference either in the homing speeds or in the homing times of anosmic control and experimental pigeons. We therefore have to assume further mechanisms guiding the pigeons home in addition to a possibly olfactory one.  相似文献

The biology of a population of the cardinalfish Apogon rueppellii has been studied over several years (1977–1983) in the Swan Estuary in south-western Australia, using ramples collected monthly from the shallows by beach seine and from various depths by otter trawl. While the life cycle of this species typically lasts for one year, at the end of which time the mean length is 50 to 60 mm, some individuals survive for a further year and attain lengths up to 104 mm. A. rueppellii shows a marked tendency to move offshore into deeper water during the winter months. This tendency is more pronounced in the 1+ than in the 0+ year class and in larger than smaller 0+ individuals. An inshore movement of A. rueppellii in the spring is followed by spawning and by oral brooding by the males, which leads to the recruitment of large numbers of a new 0+ year class on to the banks during the summer. The offshore movement is correlated with changes in salinity and temperature. The larger catches taken by otter trawl during the day than at night indicate that A. rueppellii exhibits a diel pattern of activity. Mean fecundity ranged from 70 in the 45 to 49 mm size class to 345 in the 90 to 94 mm size class. Measurements of fecundity and the number of oral-brooded eggs demonstrated that the majority of the eggs released by the female are collected and incubated by the males. Copepods are ingested in relatively greater amounts by small than by large A. rueppellii, whereas the reverse situation occurs with larger crustaceans, polychaetes and small fish. The presence of greater amounts of copepods in the diet during the day and of amphipods at night probably reflects the diel activity patterns of the prey.  相似文献

Summary The roles of male and female lesser snow geese (Anser caerulescens) in offspring care are well documented, but we know little about flexibility in these roles and how essential they are for offspring survival. We asked whether uni-parental care was adequate, which sex was required at various stages of the reproductive cycle, and what the costs and consequences were of variable amounts of parental care. We found that two parents were important in acquiring nest sites and producing clutches. Widows losing mates during the latter part of laying or in early incubation experienced similar rates of success in hatching clutches to paired females, but males losing mates during incubation experienced total nest failure. Partial clutch loss, hatch loss, intraspecific nest parasitism, duration of incubation periods and gosling weights at hatch did not differ for pairs or widows. In 1983 at La Pérouse Bay, Manitoba, Canada, widows and pairs had similar incubation behaviour, but widows were harassed more and spent more time in full alert posture while on their nests. In 1952 and 1953 at Southhampton Island, Northwest Territories, widows were significantly lighter in body weight prior to hatch than paired females. Thus while widows can bring clutches to hatch successfully, the loss of mates may result in additional physiological costs. Although all possibilities have not been tested experimentally, it appears that costs to uni-parental care up to hatch are not significant. Data collected so far on consequences of uni-parental care provided during the post-hatch period are equivocal, as in one year survival of goslings from single parent broods seemed poor and in another it did not appeart to differ from pairs. The minimum amount of parental care required to raise snow goslings from hatch to recruitment has yet to be determined.  相似文献
