The crepuscular nymphalid butterfly Manataria maculata was studied in Monteverde cloud forest, Costa Rica, during the dry season reproductive diapause. M. maculata has ears in the form of Vogel's organs located near the base of the forewings. Its behaviour in response to bursts of ultrasonic pulses (26 kHz, 110 dB SPL at 1 m) was condition-dependent. At dusk and dawn the sound consistently elicited evasive responses, similar to those of moths, in flying individuals. In contrast day-roosting individuals always remained motionless although they were alert to other stimuli. The daily movements between day- and night-roosts coincided in time and light intensity with the activity of insectivorous bats. This is the first reported case of ultrasonic hearing connected to evasive flights in a true butterfly (Papilionoidea). It strongly supports the idea that echolocating bats were involved in the evolution of hearing in butterflies.  相似文献

Deception is a crucial yet incompletely understood strategy of social parasites. In central Europe, the Mountain Alcon Blue, Maculinea rebeli, a highly endangered butterfly, parasitises several Myrmica ant species. Caterpillars gain access to host nests probably by faking the ants odour. We analysed gas chromatography–mass spectrometry data of body surface hydrocarbons of pre-adoption and hibernated larvae of Maculinea rebeli and of their host species Myrmica sabuleti and M. schencki. Data were ordinated by different methods, based on similarities in the relative quantities of compounds between chromatograms. The two Myrmica species exhibit species-specific profiles. The Maculinea rebeli pre-adoption larva has a complex profile that simultaneously contains species-specific substances of the two investigated host species. This evidence leads to the interpretation that, in central Europe, Maculinea rebeli is predisposed for multi-host use by the chemical signature of its pre-adoption larva. The Maculinea rebeli larva clearly does not rely on an intersection-odour of compounds common to all host ant species, but synthesises an aggregate-odour containing specific compounds of each of the investigated hosts. Heavy bombing during World War II in Europe, particularly in Germany, left thousands of unexploded bombs buried underground and underwater. The bombs can be detected with magnetic sensors, but sorting through the huge amounts of data generated in area searches has proven to be by far the most difficult part of the task. Recently, a data analysis program has been developed that is capable of correlating global positioning system (GPS) data to magnetic sensor readings to identify likely bomb site candidates in a remarkably short period of time. A key to the success of this application is the use of packaged data-analysis software, Origin, from Microcal Software, Inc. (Northampton, Massachusetts), which is capable of interfacing to external C and C++ pattern curve-fitting routines that operate at the required high rates of speed.  相似文献

The mechanical properties of spider dragline fibres are altered by CO2 exposure under anaesthetizing conditions during the spinning process. In order to relate these macroscopic changes to a microscopic model, the extrusion of dragline silk was studied by synchrotron radiation microdiffraction. A brief exposure of a female Nephila senigalensis spider to CO2 results after an incubation time of less than 7 min in the extrusion of a thread (two fibres) swollen with water. The data are interpreted for a model of crystalline -sheet domains containing nanofibrils, which reinforce a network of protein chains. The protein network absorbs water, leaving the nanofibrils unaffected. A continuous flow of CO2 results in a co-extrusion of a dragline thread and an isotropic silk fraction, which probably has a glycine-rich sequence. Long CO2 exposure reduces the axial alignment of nanofibrils, presumably due to a partial destruction of the amorphous network.  相似文献

Haloacetic acids (HAAs) and trihalomethanes (THMs) were generated in bench-scale chlorination experiments using treated waters (prior to final chlorination) of the three major drinking water utilities of the Quebec City area. The purpose was to investigate the formation and occurrence of these chlorination by-products (CBPs) on a seasonal basis. Data for HAAs, THMs and other physico-chemical parameters were produced through a six-month sampling program with variable conditions of water quality, water temperature, applied chlorine dose and reaction time. In waters from the three utilities, chloroform (THM specie), dichloroacetic and trichloroacetic acid (HAA species) were the most prevalent compounds due to the low concentrations of bromide in the utilities' raw waters. Significant differences in CBP occurrence were noted between the three utilities' chlorinated waters, mainly due to the type of disinfectant applied to raw water. The use of pre-ozonation, as opposed to pre-chlorination (or direct chlorination) in one of the utilities appears to be the major factor contributing to that utility's potential for compliance with current THM and future HAA standards. Seasonal variations in THMs and HAAs were mainly associated with variations in organic precursors and to changes in water temperature (two parameters which vary widely on a seasonal basis in surface waters of southern Quebec), with CBP occurrence at its highest in spring. Statistical correlations between HAAs and THMs were moderate and only temperature appeared to affect the preponderance of one CBP or the other. Finally, a regression analysis was carried out aimed at associating each CBP to water quality and the experimental parameters. Thanks to their predictive ability, multivariate models seem to be the tools with the best potential for decision-making purposes.  相似文献
