In order to explore soil profile CO2 transport and production, values of vertical soil profile CO2 concentration, moisture and temperature were measured continuously during whole cotton growing season in oasis cotton field of Aksu National Experimental Station of Oasis Farmland Ecosystem, central Asia. Simultaneously, soil CO2 efflux was measured by chamber system to assess the deducing result by Fick’s first law. In our experiment, soil CO2 effluxes were determined by two related intimately methods. Soil CO2 releasing at 0–20 cm depth was calculated by gas transport equation and was found to be closely related to soil CO2 efflux. However, mean values of soil CO2 production at 0–20 cm depth were less than those of soil CO2 efflux during the whole cotton growing season. This study aims to analyse the heavy metal pollutants in Jeddah, the second largest city in the Gulf Cooperation Council with a population exceeding 3.5 million, and many vehicles. Ninety-eight street dust samples were collected seasonally from the six major roads as well as the Jeddah Beach, and subsequently digested using modified Leeds Public Analyst method. The heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Cd, and Pb) were extracted from the ash using methyl isobutyl ketone as solvent extraction and eventually analysed by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Multivariate statistical techniques, principal component analysis (PCA), and hierarchical cluster analysis were applied to these data. Heavy metal concentrations were ranked according to the following descending order: Fe > Zn > Mn > Cu > Pb > Cd. In order to study the pollution and health risk from these heavy metals as well as estimating their effect on the environment, pollution indices, integrated pollution index, enrichment factor, daily dose average, hazard quotient, and hazard index were all analysed. The PCA showed high levels of Zn, Fe, and Cd in Al Kurnish road, while these elements were consistently detected on King Abdulaziz and Al Madina roads. The study indicates that high levels of Zn and Pb pollution were recorded for major roads in Jeddah. Six out of seven roads had high pollution indices. This study is the first step towards further investigations into current health problems in Jeddah, such as anaemia and asthma. 相似文献

Over the past decades, uncontrolled population growth and rapid urbanization and industrialization have resulted in environmental problems in Corlu Town, Turkey. One of the most important problems is solid waste due to inadequate management practices. Nowadays, increasing public awareness of the environment compels local authorities to define and to adopt new solutions for waste management. This paper presents a general overview of current solid waste management practices in Corlu Town and principles of the recommended municipal solid waste (MSW) management system. In Corlu, 170 tonnes of municipal solid waste are generated each day, or 1.150 kg per capita per day. Approximately one-half of the municipal solid waste generated is organic material and 30% of the MSW consists of recyclable materials. The recommended system deals with maximizing recycling and minimizing landfilling of municipal solid waste, and consists of separation at source, collection, sorting, recycling, composting and sanitary landfilling. This study also analyzed the recommended system with respect to feasibility and economics. To evaluate whether the suggested system is cost effective or not, the operating cost of the recommended system and market prices of recyclable materials were compared, and the results show that the recommended system will reduce required landfill volume up to 27% of compared to the present situation. The profit of the recommended system is estimated to be about 80 million US dollars. 相似文献

Man’s increased demand for food and better living conditions has led to over exploitation of resources and the consequent
generation of enormous amounts of liquid and solid waste materials. This is one of the global challenges for mankind. In Malaysia,
palm oil mill waste (POMW) contributes the highest proportion of industrial solid wastes produced yearly. Wastes from the
mills include palm oil mill effluent, decanter cake, empty fruit bunches, seed shells and the fibre from the mesocarp. Direct
application of POMW into agricultural soil has resulted in a number of problems such as water pollution, leaching. However,
with application rates specific for targeted plant species, land application can be employed as a permanent solution to the

The aim of this work was to study the physical and chemical properties of different oil palm wastes, viz. empty fruit bunch
(EFB), oil palm frond (OPF) and oil palm trunk (OPT). A study (84 days duration) was conducted to evaluate the efficiency
of an exotic earthworm species (epigeic-African Nightcrawler (Eudrilus euginae)) for the decomposition of different types of oil palm wastes (EFB, OPT and OPF) into valuable vermicompost. The decrease
in earthworm’s biomass gain for EFB, OPT and OPF may be due to exhaustion of worm feed in vermicomposters. The percentage
of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium in vermicompost was found to increase while pH and total organic carbon declined as
a function of the vermicomposting period. The vermicompost obtained showed an increase in heavy metal content for all the
reactors, but levels were still in the range of nutrient in the vermicompost. The data reveal that vermicomposting (using
African Nightcrawler) is a suitable technology for the decomposition of oil palm wastes, especially EFB into value-added material. 相似文献

Reactive dyes account for one of the major sources of dye wastes in textile effluent. In this study, decolorization of the monoazo dye, Acid Orange 7 (AO7) by the Enterococcus faecalis strain ZL that isolated from a palm oil mill effluent treatment plant has been investigated. Decolorization efficiency of azo dye is greatly affected by the types of nutrients and the size of inoculum used. In this work, one-factor-at-a-time (method and response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to optimize these operational factors and also to study the combined interaction between them. Analysis of AO7 decolorization was done using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, desorption study, UV–Vis spectral analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The optimum condition via RSM for the color removal of AO7 was found to be as follows: yeast extract, 0.1 %?w/v, glycerol concentration of 0.1 %?v/v, and inoculum density of 2.5 %?v/v at initial dye concentration of 100 mg/L at 37 °C. Decolorization efficiency of 98 % was achieved in only 5 h. The kinetic of AO7 decolorization was found to be first order with respect to dye concentration with a k value of 0.87/h. FTIR, desorption study, UV–Vis spectral analysis, FESEM, and HPLC findings indicated that the decolorization of AO7 was mainly due to the biosorption as well as biodegradation of the bacterial cells. In addition, HPLC analyses also showed the formation of sulfanilic acid as a possible degradation product of AO7 under facultative anaerobic condition. Inadequate management of biomedical waste can be associated with risks to healthcare workers, patients, communities and their environment. This study was conducted to assess the handling and treatment of biomedical waste in different healthcare settings in Egypt. Five hospitals and ten primary healthcare settings were surveyed using a modified survey questionnaire for waste management. This questionnaire was obtained from the World Health Organization (WHO), with the aim of assessing the processing systems for biomedical waste disposal. Researchers found that biomedical waste is inadequately processed in hospitals and primary healthcare settings due to the absence of written policies and protocols. Accordingly, healthcare staff, patients, the community and the environment may be negatively affected by exposure to the hazards of biomedical waste. The development of waste management policies, plans, and protocols are strongly recommended, in addition to establishing training programs on proper waste management for all healthcare workers. 相似文献

The Qaraaoun Reservoir (impoundment of the River Litani) is the only artificial surface water body in the country, Lebanon. Earlier study on the water quality of the Qaraaoun Reservoir identified three water quality zoning with a central distinct zone suitable for multipurpose water usage. The objective of this study was to extend the earlier work by considering the total metal content of reservoir bed sediments and hence to evaluate factors that control metal deposition or capture. Water samples were collected from 15 sampling sites and sediment samples were simultaneously collected from 9 sites. Water parameters analyzed were pH, Eh, DO and temperature. Sediment samples were dried and sieved and sediment < 75 μ m was retained for analysis. Sediments were subjected to a stepwise heating process with aqua regia to extract the metals, and their content in sediments determined by ICP-MS. The sediment data revealed higher metal contents where the river entered the reservoir which matched higher concentrations of water parameters at the influx site. Regression analysis of total metals in sediments with distance from the river Litani influx point to the dam revealed a log trend for Fe, Cr and Ni, whereas, the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb were better described by a polynomial regression. Three sediment zones were identified: entrance, oxidation (central) and reducing (near dam) zones. Sediment contents of Zn, Cu and Pb correlated with organic content, whereas sediment Cr and Ni were associated with iron. It was concluded that sediments act as a sink for metals and the deposition of metals is primarily related to sediment organic content and the level of dissolved oxygen in water. 相似文献
