The present study deals with the seasonal variations in the concentrations of heavy metals namely chromium, lead and mercury by using spectrophotometric methods. The water samples were collected at regular intervals from five selected sites of river Gomti in the pre-monsoon period (months of February-May) and the post monsoon period (months of October-January). The concentrations of chromium (VI) and mercury (II) were determined by using Genesys-10 UV-VIS Spectrophotometer while lead (II) concentrations were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Perkin-Elmer 5000 model. The concentrations of all the three metals were found to be higher in the pre-monsoon period than in the post-monsoon period. The statistical analysis of the data was discussed in both the seasons in terms of mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation. 相似文献

Scientists and engineers are manipulating matter at the nanoscale, and these nanoscale processes and products are being used by industry in commercially available products. These products are either applied directly to the environment or end up in the environment through indirect pathways. This review examines the state of current environmental risk assessment of nanotechnologies. Nanotechnology is described generally, then both the possible benefits of nanotechnology and the risks are reviewed in a traditional way. Parametric statistical approaches, correlations and multiple linear regressions were used to develop models for the interpretation of hydrogeochemical parameters in the Western part of Delhi state, India. The hydrogeochemical parameters indicated that the groundwater quality is not safe for consumption. The water is moderately saline and the salinity level is increasing over time. There is also the problem of nitrate pollution. The correlation between electrical conductivity (EC) and other water quality parameters except potassium (K(+)), nitrate (NO(3)(-)) and bicarbonate (HCO(3)(-)) is significantly positive and Ca(++)+ Mg(++)/Na(+)+ K(+) is significantly negative. In predicting EC, the multiple R(2) values of 0.996 and 0.985 indicate that 99.6% and 98.5% variability in the observed EC could be ascribed to the combined effect of Na(+), HCO(3)(-), Cl(-), SO(4)(--), NO(3)(-) and Ca(++)+ Mg(++) for the year of 2005 and 2006 respectively. Out of 99.6% of the variability in EC in 2005, 51.2% was due to Cl(-) alone, and 8.5%, 12.5%, 6.1%, 14.7% and 6.7% were due to Na(+), HCO(3)(-), SO(4)(--), NO(3)(-) and Ca(++) + Mg(++). Similarly in 2006, out of 98.5% of the variability in EC, 48.5% was due to Cl(-) alone, and 10.4%, 12.7%, 5.3%, 17.2% and 4.4% were due to Na(+), HCO(3)(-), SO(4)(--), NO(3)(-) and Ca(++)+ Mg(++). The analysis shows that a good correlation exists between EC, Cl(-) and SO(4)(--) either individually or in combination with other ions and the multiple regression models can predict EC at 5% level of significance. 相似文献

Geospatial tools supported by ancillary geo-database and extensive fieldwork regarding the distribution of tiger and its prey in Anchankmar Wildlife Sanctuary (AMWLS) were used to build a tiger habitat suitability model. This consists of a quantitative geographical information system (GIS) based approach using field parameters and spatial thematic information. The estimates of tiger sightings, its prey sighting and predicted distribution with the assistance of contextual environmental data including terrain, road network, settlement and drainage surfaces were used to develop the model. Eight variables in the dataset viz., forest cover type, forest cover density, slope, aspect, altitude, and distance from road, settlement and drainage were seen as suitable proxies and were used as independent variables in the analysis. Principal component analysis and binomial multiple logistic regression were used for statistical treatments of collected habitat parameters from field and independent variables respectively. The assessment showed a strong expert agreement between the predicted and observed suitable areas. A combination of the generated information and published literature was also used while building a habitat suitability map for the tiger. The modeling approach has taken the habitat preference parameters of the tiger and potential distribution of prey species into account. For assessing the potential distribution of prey species, independent suitability models were developed and validated with the ground truth. It is envisaged that inclusion of the prey distribution probability strengthens the model when a key species is under question. The results of the analysis indicate that tiger occur throughout the sanctuary. The results have been found to be an important input as baseline information for population modeling and natural resource management in the wildlife sanctuary. The development and application of similar models can help in better management of the protected areas of national interest. 相似文献

The aim of this study is to determine effects of treated sewage sludge (TSS) levels as an organic matter (OM) resource on temporal variations of some soil properties of a Typic Xerofluvent soil. The experiment was conducted in Menemen Plain, in the Western Anatolia Region of Turkey (latitudes 38 degrees 34'48.22'-38 degrees 34'49.24' N; longitudes 27 degrees 1'23.05-27 degrees 1'24.14' E) in the years of 2003 and 2004. Moist TSS was added to the soil at the rates of 0, 30, 60 and 90 t ha(-1) on May 1, 2003. Peanut (Arachis hypogaea) was planted as first crop. On the other hand, mixture of green barley (Hordeum vulgare) and common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) was planted as second crop. During the experiment, soil samples were taken in five different periods (1st, June 18, 2003; 2nd, November 13, 2003; 3rd, April 30, 2004; 4th, October 10, 2004 and 5th, May 12, 2004). The results showed that increasing TSS application to Typic Xerofluvent soil was significantly increased total salt, OM, total porosity, micro porosity, macro porosity, field capacity, wilting point, available water content, structure stability index and aggregation percentage values of soil when compared with control. Meanwhile, particle density, dry bulk density and nonaggregated silt + clay values of soil decreased. On the other hand, soil reaction (pH), lime content and total silt + clay values of soil did not significantly change. In the course of time, depending on decomposing of TSS organic materials in soil, effect of TSS levels on soil properties decreased particularly in the last periods. For this reason, it can be recommended that 90 t ha(-1) moist TSS can be added once in 2 years for improving soil properties of Typic Xerofluvent soil, which are characterized by low OM content. 相似文献

In present study horizontal and vertical distribution of traffic-related pollutants (CO and SO(2)) within the street canyons in (CO and SO(2)) Varanasi, India was monitored. The results showed that average horizontal profiles of traffic-related pollutant concentrations within street canyon at leeward side were approximately same as that of windward side. However, the vertical concentration of both the pollutants decreases with height above the ground and study indicated that CO and SO(2) concentrations at different heights below the roof showed clear vertical self-gradient. CO and SO(2) concentration decreased with height and the minimum value occurred at the roof. It was concluded from the observed results that pollutants from vehicular exhaust emissions in the street canyon of Varanasi were evenly distributed. This result may be due to the fact that wind vortices are not formed. Therefore, urban planners can use this type of streets so that there is proper ventilation and dispersal of pollutants. 相似文献

In this study, variance analysis technique on unbalanced data was examined, and in this sense, Type II (fitting constants) methods were studied. The aim of this study was to show that meaningful evaluations can be performed even in unbalanced conditions and to contribute to the present investigations in biological area. In the implementation part of the study, the juvenile leaf densities of Posidonia oceanica—which is a sea grass that grows in Izmir Bay, and has very important ecological effects—in various regions and in various depths were determined. The results revealed that depth affect number of juvenile leaf (d.f.?=?3, F?=?523.90, R 2?=?0.998, p?0,01). There were significant differences among region (d.f.?=?3, F?=?41.53, p?0.01), site (d.f.?=?1, F?=?19.65, p?0.01). As a result of Tukey ANOVA test it can be said that there were significant differences among Urla–Gülbahçe (p?0.001), Urla–Foça (p?0.001), Karaburun–Gülbahçe (p?0.001), Karaburun–Foça (p?0.001). It was found that Foça had the highest juvenile leaf counts (782.15?±?435.71) whereas Urla had the lowest juvenile leaf counts (231.46?±?175.67). Effects of environmental methylmercury on the health of wild birds, mammals, and fish 总被引:18,自引:0,他引:18
Wild piscivorous fish, mammals, and birds may be at risk for elevated dietary methylmercury intake and toxicity. In controlled feeding studies, the consumption of diets that contained Hg (as methylmercury) at environmentally realistic concentrations resulted in a range of toxic effects in fish, birds, and mammals, including behavioral, neurochemical, hormonal, and reproductive changes. Limited field-based studies, especially with certain wild piscivorous bird species, e.g., the common loon, corroborated laboratory-based results, demonstrating significant relations between methylmercury exposure and various indicators of methylmercury toxicity, including reproductive impairment. Potential population effects in fish and wildlife resulting from dietary methylmercury exposure are expected to vary as a function of species life history, as well as regional differences in fish-Hg concentrations, which, in turn, are influenced by differences in Hg deposition and environmental methylation rates. However, population modeling suggests that reductions in Hg emissions could have substantial benefits for some common loon populations that are currently experiencing elevated methylmercury exposure. Predicted benefits would be mediated primarily through improved hatching success and development of hatchlings to maturity as Hg concentrations in prey fish decline. Other piscivorous species may also benefit from decreased Hg exposure but have not been as extensively studied as the common loon. 相似文献
