We examine the potential for adaptation to climate change in Indian forests, and derive the macroeconomic implications of
forest impacts and adaptation in India. The study is conducted by integrating results from the dynamic global vegetation model
IBIS and the computable general equilibrium model GRACE-IN, which estimates macroeconomic implications for six zones of India.
By comparing a reference scenario without climate change with a climate impact scenario based on the IPCC A2-scenario, we
find major variations in the pattern of change across zones. Biomass stock increases in all zones but the Central zone. The
increase in biomass growth is smaller, and declines in one more zone, South zone, despite higher stock. In the four zones
with increases in biomass growth, harvest increases by only approximately 1/3 of the change in biomass growth. This is due
to two market effects of increased biomass growth. One is that an increase in biomass growth encourages more harvest given
other things being equal. The other is that more harvest leads to higher supply of timber, which lowers market prices. As
a result, also the rent on forested land decreases. The lower prices and rent discourage more harvest even though they may
induce higher demand, which increases the pressure on harvest. In a less perfect world than the model describes these two
effects may contribute to an increase in the risk of deforestation because of higher biomass growth. Furthermore, higher harvest
demands more labor and capital input in the forestry sector. Given total supply of labor and capital, this increases the cost
of production in all the other sectors, although very little indeed. Forestry dependent communities with declining biomass

Intraspecific variation in a resting metabolic rate (RMR) is likely to be an important determinant of energetic-resource use
and may influence the resources subsequently available for allocation to traits not directly associated with somatic maintenance.
The influence of RMR on resource availability could be especially important for condition-dependent sexual traits, such as
cricket calls, that are themselves energetically costly to produce. RMR may also be associated with longevity, either negatively
because individuals with a high RMR burn resources faster and die young, or positively as individuals with high RMR are more
able to accrue resources to fuel survival. Additionally, the associations between RMR and other characters may vary across
populations if differential selection or drift shapes these traits. Here we tested for differences in RMR, body mass, calling
effort, and longevity in two populations of cricket Gryllodes sigillatus and then evaluated the potential influence of RMR on calling and longevity. We find that RMR, calling effort, and longevity
varied across populations, but mass did not. Controlling for population and mass, RMR was not significantly associated with
calling effort, but was negatively associated with longevity. These findings suggest that male crickets that live fast die

A study was performed to investigate the effects of complete and skeleton photoperiods on gonadal stimulation in baya weaver, Ploceus philippinus. In August 2003, five groups of acclimatized birds (n = 7 each) were exposed to 6L: 13D: 1L: 4D, 6L: 6D: 1L: 11D, 11L: 13D and 13L: 11D. Birds were refractory and their exposure to 6L:13D:1L:4D, 6L:6D:1L:11D, 11L:13D and 13L:11D did not evoke any response. This clearly indicates that the birds were insensitive to the stimulatory effects of these photoperiods and perceived them as short days. An attempt was made to test the responsivity by subjecting all these groups to long day exposure after 16 weeks of experiment. Under 16L: 8D, birds did not show a response during the first 4 weeks of exposure (week 16 to week 20), but thereafter there was a significant photoinduction except 11L:13D (week 24), but the rate and magnitude was different. Until the end of the experiment (32 weeks), all groups of birds had maximum testicular volume except 11L:13D. Birds pre-exposed to 6L:13D:1L:4D, 6L:6D:1L:11D, 11L:13D and 13L:11D responded to 16L:8D, which suggests that these photoperiods helped the birds in recovering their photosensitivity. The results from this experiment indicate that baya weaver interprets a light period depending when the light falls relative to its endogenous circadian system. 相似文献

Fresh water prawns, Macrobrachium lamarrei and Macrobrachium dayanum (Crustacea-Decapoda) were subjected to static bioassay tests to ascertain the LC50 values of copper sulphate. The 24, 48, 72 and 96 hr LC50 values of copper sulphate for M. lamarrei were 0.38, 0.361, 0.343 and 0.300 mg/l and for M. dayanum were 1.634, 0.988, 0.532 and 0.418 mg/l respectively.
