Iodine is an important trace element in geological and biological processes. We summarize here recent results and new data of experiments and observations carried out to improve the understanding of concentration levels and behavior of natural and anthropogenic iodine nuclides in the global environment. The distribution of stable iodine in the Earth's crust was estimated using concentration data in a suite of representative samples and the influence of subduction on the marine iodine cycle was investigated using (129)I systematics on iodine-rich brines from Japan. The importance of microorganisms for the natural iodine cycle is shown in recent studies of iodine sorption on soil and of iodine volatilization from terrestrial and marine environments. Levels of anthropogenic (129)I were measured in samples collected around a spent fuel reprocessing plant in Japan. 相似文献

In butterflies and moths, the wing margins are fringed with specialized scales that are typically longer than common scales. In the hindwings of some small moths, the posterior margins are fringed with particularly long filamentary scales. Despite the small size of these moth wings, these scales are much longer than those of large moths and butterflies. In the current study, photography of the tethered flight of a small moth, Phthorimaea operculella, revealed a wide array composed of a large number of long filamentary scales. This array did not become disheveled in flight, maintaining a coherent sheet-like structure during wingbeat. Examination of the morphology of individual scales revealed that each filamentary scale consists of a proximal stalk and distal branches. Moreover, not only long scales but also shorter scales of various lengths were found to coexist in each small section of the wing margin. Scale branches were ubiquitously and densely distributed within the scale array to form a mesh-like architecture similar to a nonwoven fabric. We propose that possible mechanical interactions among branched filamentary scales, mediated by these branches, may contribute to maintaining a coherent sheet-like structure of the scale array during wingbeat. 相似文献

The technique of ultra-low volume by ultra-light aircraft for pesticide spray application has been discussed for some time in North America, mainly due to the air worthiness of such an aircraft which was not designed to carry appreciable amounts of payload. The risk factor of such application in insect control has not been determined, while applicator exposure to insecticide in ULV application by manual sprayer was assessed. An attempt was made to produce, by a series of field exposure measurements, a set of applicator exposure data for ULV-ULA and to compare the results with the data produced in synthetic pyrethroid application by using a hand-held ULV applicator. The applicator exposure of hand-held operation resulted in as high as 1000 times the exposure of aerial applicators indicating the effect of work practices and man-machine relationships. A delineation of toxic dose for these two types of applications shows that the aerial application could provide some benefits in reducing applicator exposure potential. 相似文献

Feedlots produce a range of trace chemicals that impact human health and/or the environment. The most widely used growth promoter in intensive cattle production in Argentina is monensin, an ionophore polyether with antibacterial and coccidiostatic activity. Several beef cattle feedlots with different management systems, weather conditions, feed types and feedbunk types were selected in different agro-ecological areas of Argentina. Monensin concentrations in samples of pen soil, manure, feed and runoff were analysed. The monensin concentrations measured in soil samples suggest a strong dependence on the type of feed employed in the facility. During feed distribution by trucks to the feedbunks, some feed can reach the soil, thereby increasing the soil monensin concentration close to the feedbunks. The wide range of monensin concentrations detected in manure samples could be explained by the rapid degradation of monensin in the manure matrix. Monensin levels in runoff samples indicated that the distribution of monensin in the environment could be governed by surface phenomena including horizontal movement and adsorption of monensin in particulate material present in the runoff layers. This is the first study of monensin distribution in Argentinian feedlots and serves as the starting point for more sustainable and environmentally friendly feedlot management. 相似文献

The genetic structure and phylogeography of the brown seaweed Sargassum horneri/filicinum complex in Japan were studied based on the mitochondrial cox3 haplotype. The cox3 haplotypes found were divided into three clades in a statistical parsimony network, among which there were large numbers
of steps. Contrary to the reported large amount of drifting S. horneri along the Japanese coast, the three clades were dividedly distributed on the Japanese coast: the northern Pacific, the central
Pacific, and western Japan. The western Japan S. horneri had haplotypes that were phylogenetically closer to those of S. filicinum than to the northern and central Pacific S. horneri populations. The S. filicinum populations were included within the western Japan clade and grouped together with the S. horneri samples from western Japan. Taken together with the unstable morphological diagnosis, this result suggests that S. filicinum should be reduced into a synonymy of S. horneri. The TMRCA analysis suggested that the divergence time of each clade may go back to the last interglacial period and a skyline
plot suggested that the last glacial maximum had only a small effect on the population size of S. horneri. The geographic subdivision of the three groups, in spite of a large amount of drifting mats, suggests a limited contribution
of drifting mats to gene flow on a large geographic scale. On a small geographic scale, a small number of haplotypes were
shared between S. horneri-type and S. filicinum-type populations. This result suggests that populations of these two types are partially, though not completely, isolated

Adsorption removal of pollutants by active cokes produced from sludge in the energy recycle process of wastes 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
This study proposes a recycling system of sludge into active cokes and the fundamental examinations for the application were carried out. In the system, active cokes were produced by carbonizing pellets of sludge in a steam stream. Pyrolysis gas yielded by carbonization can be available to a fuel for a steam generation boiler. The exhaust heat from the boiler is used sequentially for drying of sludge. The active cokes are applied to the adsorbent for dioxin removal in exhaust gas from incinerators of wastes, or for purification of gas obtained in a gasification process of wastes, particularly removal of H2S. The used adsorbent is not recycled, but incinerated in the furnace without a desorption process to decompose adsorbed dioxin or to oxidize H2S for a sequential desulfurization process of SO2. Dry pellets of sludge were carbonized in a quartz tube reactor under various atmospheres. The micro pore structure and the adsorption performance of the cokes produced without activation process were examined. The micro pore structure was influenced by the temperature, the sort of flow gas (N2, CO2 and steam) and carbonization time, and the active cokes produced under the condition of the temperature 823 K for 60 min in the steam atmosphere had a largest specific surface area in the diameter less than 5 nm. The amount of benzene adsorption as an alternative substance of dioxin into the active cokes had a similar quality to a commercial active char produced from coal if it was evaluated by adsorption per a unit specific surface area. This fundamental knowledge must be reflected to an optimum design for development of a simple continuous process to produce the active cokes by a fluidized bed type of the carbonization furnace. 相似文献

Enhanced degradation of carbazole and 2,3-dichlorodibenzo-p-dioxin in soils by Pseudomonas resinovorans strain CA10 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We studied the degradation of carbazole (CAR) and 2,3-dichlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3-DCDD) in soils inoculated with carbazole- and dioxin-degrader Pseudomonas resinovorans strain CA10. By using Tn5-based transposon delivery systems, this bacterium was chromosomally marked with a tandem green fluorescent protein (gfp) gene. Real-time competitive PCR and direct counting using the (gfp) marker were employed to monitor the total number of carbazole 1,9a-dioxygenase gene (carAa) and survival of CA10 cells in the soil and soil slurry microcosms. Bioaugmentation studies indicated that the survival of the marked CA10 cells in soil microcosms was strongly influenced by pH and organic matter. While the number of the marked CA10 cells decreased rapidly in pH 6 with low organic matter, a high cell density was maintained in pH 7.3 with 2.5% organic matters up to 21 days after inoculation. In pH 7.3 soil, the period needed for complete degradation of CAR (100 microg kg(-1)) was markedly shortened from 21 to 7 days by the inoculation with the CA10 cells. Single inoculation of CA10 cells into the soil slurry system of 2,3-DCDD-contaminated soil enhanced the degradation of 2,3-DCDD from 25.0% to 37.0%. In this system, the population density of CA10 cells and the total number of carAa gene were maintained up to 14 days after inoculation. By repeated inoculation (every 2 days) with CA10 cells each at a density of 10(9) CFU g(-1) of soil, almost all of the 2,3-DCDD (1 microg kg(-1)) was degraded within 14 days. Results of these experiments suggest that P. resinovorans strain CA10 may be an important resource for bioremediation of CAR and chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin in contaminated soils. 相似文献

Two enzymes were purified from the green algaCodium fragile, collected in 1988 at Fukuoka, Japan, by batch-wise ion-exchange extraction, affinity chromatography and ion-exchange high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using Boc-Ala-Ala-Pro-Arg-pNA as a substrate. The molecular weights of the enzymes were estimated as 38 000 and 39 000, using gel filtration HPLC. The enzymes had the same optimal pH range of 7 to 9 for both activities, and an exclusively hydrolyzed peptide bond on the carboxyl-terminal side of theL-arginine of peptidep-nitroanilides. The ratios of the enzymatic activity for X-Arg-pNA to X-Lys-pNA were larger than 100. The enzymes exhibited 30 times higher activity toward Boc-Ala-Ala-Pro-Arg-pNA when compared with trypsin. The activities were strongly inhibited by diisopropyl phosphofluoridate (DFP), and partially inhibited by phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride (PMSF), benzamidine, leupeptin and antipain. The intramolecular distribution of stable isotopes in nitrous oxide that is emitted during coal combustion was analyzed using an isotopic ratio mass spectrometer equipped with a modified ion collector system (IRMS). The coal was combusted in a test furnace fitted with a single burner and the flue gases were collected at the furnace exit following removal of SO(x), NO(x), and H2O in order to avoid the formation of artifact nitrous oxide. The nitrous oxide in the flue gases proved to be enriched in 15N relative to the fuel coal. In air-staged combustion experiments, the staged air ratio was controlled over a range of 0 (unstaged combustion), 20%, and 30%. As the staged air ratio increased, the delta15N and delta18O of the nitrous oxide in the flue gases became depleted. The central nitrogen of the nitrous oxide molecule, N(alpha), was enriched in 15N relative to that occupying the end position of the molecule, N(beta), but this preference, expressed as delta15N(alpha)-delta15N(beta), decreased with the increase in the staged air ratio. Thermal decomposition and hydrogen reduction experiments carried out using a tube reactor allowed qualitative estimates of the kinetic isotope effects that occurred during the decomposition of the nitrous oxide and quantitative estimates of the extent to which the nitrous oxide had decomposed. The site preference of nitrous oxide increased with the extent of the decomposition reactions. Assuming that no site preference exists in nitrous oxide before decomposition, the behavior of nitrous oxide in the test combustion furnace was analyzed using the Rayleigh equation based on a single distillation model. As a result, the extent of decomposition of nitrous oxide was estimated as 0.24-0.26 during the decomposition reaction governed by the thermal decomposition and as 0.35-0.38 during the decomposition reaction governed by the hydrogen reduction in staged combustion. The intramolecular distribution of nitrous oxide can be a valuable parameter to estimate the extent of decomposition reaction and to understand the reaction pathway of nitrous oxide at the high temperature. 相似文献
