Modelling calculations have been performed to predict the radiological impact of the sea to land transfer pathway to members of the public in North Wales from 1952 to 2004. The radionuclides of interest were (99)Tc, (137)Cs, (239,240)Pu and (241)Am and the exposure routes considered were food consumption, external and inhalation. The consumption of locally grown terrestrial food in the early to mid 1980s was the most significant source of exposure to all of the groups considered, with (239,240)Pu being the radionuclide contributing most to the dose. A maximum dose of 1.46muSvy(-1) was calculated for adult members of the critical consumption group in 1985, with doses for 2004 reducing to 0.59muSvy(-1). Despite the conservative approach of the dose calculations, the dose rate values are very low, less than 0.15% of the annual limit of 1000muSvy(-1) for the UK public from controlled radiation sources (excluding medical). 相似文献

Production of coffee, especially by small holders, is often associated with various forms of shade management. To analyse the effects of shade on physical coffee quality and on sensorial cup quality of Coffea arabica L. cv. Caturra KMC, a study was carried out with 94 plots on 16 farms in two municipalities, Timaná and Oporapa, located at elevations from 1272 to 1730 masl. in Huila, Colombia. The study was designed with emphasis on shade cover variation within each of the two study areas, while minimizing the variability of environment, agronomic management other than shade, and post-harvest processing. 46 samples of shade coffee and 46 samples of sun coffee were evaluated for physical and sensorial attributes using three professional coffee cuppers (assessors). A principal component analysis including all quality and environmental variables showed that sensory attributes were influenced negatively by shade, and that physical attributes were influenced positively by altitude. A mixed linear model, with coffee cupper and farm as random variables, revealed different shade effects on coffee quality in the two areas. In Oporapa, situated at high altitudes, shade had a negative effect on fragrance, acidity, body, sweetness and preference of the beverage, while no effect was found on the physical quality. In Timaná, situated at lower altitudes, shade did not have a significant effect on sensorial attributes, but significantly reduced the number of small beans. At high altitudes with low temperatures and no nutrient or water deficits, shade trees may thus have a partly adverse effect on C. arabica cv. Caturra resulting in reduced sensory quality. The occurrence of berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei) was lower at high altitudes and higher under shade. Future studies on shade and coffee quality should focus on the interaction between physical and chemical characteristics of beans. 相似文献

The availability of food resources changes over time and space, and foraging animals are constantly faced with choices about
how to respond when a resource becomes depleted. We hypothesise that flying insects like bees discover new food sources using
an optimal Lévy flight searching strategy and odour-mediated anemotaxis, as well as visual cues. To study these searching
patterns, foraging honeybees were trained to a scented feeder which was then removed. Two new unrewarding feeders, or ‘targets’,
were then positioned up- and downwind of the original location of the training feeder. The subsequent flight patterns of the
bees were recorded over several hundred metres using harmonic radar. We show that the flight patterns constitute an optimal
Lévy flight searching strategy for the location of the training feeder, a strategy that is also optimal for the location of
alternative food sources when patchily distributed. Scented targets that were positioned upwind of the original training feeder
were investigated most with the numbers of investigations declining with increasing distance from the original feeder. Scented
targets in downwind locations were rarely investigated and unscented targets were largely ignored, despite having the same

Honey bee foragers may collect nectar, pollen, water, or propolis, and their foraging specialization has been associated with
several behavioral traits. By conditioning of the proboscis extension response (PER), we compared the performance of foragers
that collected nectar, pollen, both nectar and pollen, or water in several learning and choice assays. Foragers were first
tested in a three-trial olfactory associative learning assay. For further tests, we selected only good learners that responded
in two out of three conditioning trials. One group was tested in an additional olfactory associative learning assay involving
different reward volumes and concentrations. Another group was tested for risk sensitivity in a two-alternative forced-choice
PER procedure and then in a latent inhibition (LI) assay. Levels of acquisition in olfactory associative learning were highest
in pollen and water foragers, and better acquisition was associated with collection of heavier pollen loads and smaller and
lighter nectar loads of lower sugar concentration. Among the good learners, pollen foragers still showed better acquisition
than nectar foragers when rewarded with several volumes and concentrations of sucrose solution. Pollen and nectar foragers
were equally risk averse, preferring a constant reward to a variable one, and choice was not affected by pollen load weight.
Contrary to a previous study, pollen and nectar foragers were similarly affected by LI. We discuss possible explanations for
the discrepancy between the two studies. Overall, our results suggest that differences between foraging groups in sensitivity
to various stimuli may not correspond to differences in choice behavior. 相似文献

Missing covariate values in linear regression models can be an important problem facing environmental researchers. Existing
missing value treatment methods such as Multiple Imputation (MI), the EM algorithm and Data Augmentation (DA) have the assumption that both observed and unobserved data come from the same distribution,
most commonly a multivariate normal or a conditionally multivariate normal family. These methods do try to incorporate the
missing data mechanism and rely on the assumption of Missing At Random (MAR). We present a DA method which does not rely on
the MAR assumption and can model missing data mechanisms and covariate structure. This method utilizes the Gibbs Sampler as
a tool for incorporating these structures and mechanisms. We apply this method to an ecological data set that relates fish
condition to environmental variables. Notice that the presented DA method detects relationships that are not detected when
other missing data methods are employed.

Tropical rain forests are rapidly cleared, fragmented, and degraded in sub-Saharan Africa; however, little is known about the response of species and even of key ecological groups to these processes. One of the most intriguing (but often neglected) ecological phenomena in African rain forests is the interaction between swarm-raiding army ants and ant-following birds. Similar to their well-known Neotropical representatives, ant-following birds in Africa track the massive swarm raids of army ants and feed on arthropods flushed by the ants. In this study we analyzed the effect of habitat fragmentation and degradation of a mid-altitude Congo-Guinean rain forest in western Kenya on the structure of ant-following bird flocks. Significant numbers of swarm raids were located in all forest fragments and in both undegraded and degraded forest. Fifty-six different species of birds followed army ant raids, forming bird flocks of one to 15 species. We quantitatively differentiated the bird community into five species of specialized ant-followers and 51 species of opportunistic ant-followers. Species richness and size of bird flocks decreased with decreasing size of forest fragments and was higher in undegraded than in degraded habitat. This was caused by the decrease of the species richness and number of specialized ant-followers at swarms, while the group of opportunistic ant-followers was affected little by habitat fragmentation and degradation. The composition of bird flocks was more variable in small fragments and degraded forest, compared to undegraded habitat in large fragments. The effect of habitat fragmentation on flock structure was best explained by the strong decline of the abundance of specialized ant-followers in small forest fragments. To conserve the association of army ants and ant-following birds in its natural state, vast areas of unfragmented and undegraded tropical rain forest are necessary. 相似文献

The Arctic is undergoing biological and environmental changes, and a coordinated effort to monitor is critical to detect these changes. The Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Programme (CBMP) of the Arctic Council biodiversity working group, Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF), has developed pan-Arctic biodiversity monitoring plans that aims to improve the ability to detect and report on long-term changes. Whilst introducing this special issue, this paper also presents the making of the terrestrial monitoring plan and discusses how the plan follows the steps required for an adaptive and ecosystem-based monitoring programme. In this article, we discuss how data on key findings can be used to inform circumpolar and global assessments, including the State of the Arctic Terrestrial Biodiversity Report, which will be the first terrestrial assessment made by the CBMP. Key findings, advice for future monitoring and lessons learned will be used in planning next steps of pan-Arctic coordinated monitoring. 相似文献

Tundra-breeding birds face diverse conservation challenges, from accelerated rates of Arctic climate change to threats associated with highly migratory life histories. Here we summarise the status and trends of Arctic terrestrial birds (88 species, 228 subspecies or distinct flyway populations) across guilds/regions, derived from published sources, raw data or, in rare cases, expert opinion. We report long-term trends in vital rates (survival, reproduction) for the handful of species and regions for which these are available. Over half of all circumpolar Arctic wader taxa are declining (51% of 91 taxa with known trends) and almost half of all waterfowl are increasing (49% of 61 taxa); these opposing trends have fostered a shift in community composition in some locations. Declines were least prevalent in the African-Eurasian Flyway (29%), but similarly prevalent in the remaining three global flyways (44–54%). Widespread, and in some cases accelerating, declines underscore the urgent conservation needs faced by many Arctic terrestrial bird species. 相似文献

Disaster recovery is a key capability of federal, state, and local government. To support this capability effectively practitioners need useful and validated metrics to document how well a community is recovering from a particular disaster. This study developed and categorised recovery indicators according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)'s Recovery Support Functions and Recovery Mission Area Core Capabilities through a literature review, an evaluation of the pre‐disaster recovery plans for 87 coastal jurisdictions, and a case study of two communities (New Hanover County, North Carolina, and the City of Hoboken, New Jersey). Metrics identified in the literature were validated through the recovery plan review and the case study. The research team also identified sources for both baseline and current status data. Based on these findings, a user‐friendly checklist for practitioners was established, which will be piloted with practice partners during a future disaster recovery initiative. 相似文献
