A cellulose solvent system based on lithium chloride (LiCl) in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) was used to assess the merits of partial dissolutions of coarsely ground wood samples. Alkaline Copper Quaternary (ACQ)-treated pine wood was of particular interest for treatment given the potential to generate a copper-rich stream apart from solid and/or liquid lignocellulosic feedstocks. Treatment with NMP alone gave yields of soluble materials that were higher than typical extractives contents thereby suggesting a limited degree of wood dissolution. Inclusion of LiCl, which disrupts hydrogen bonding, gave lower wood residue recoveries (i.e., higher dissolution) with higher LiCl concentration. Lower wood residue recoveries coincided with lower Klason lignin and hemicellulose-derived sugar contents in the wood residues. After treatment with 8% LiCl in NMP, subsequent filtration afforded 34% of the ACQ-treated sapwood as a wood residue retaining only 2% of the original copper. Pouring the filtrate over an excess of water resulted in the recovery of 30% of the solids and 50% of the copper together as a copper-enriched lignocellulosic precipitate. Results demonstrate a solvent system showing potential as a means to separate heavy metals from preservative-treated wood and to recover lignocellulosic feedstocks that may be suitable for use in a biorefinery. 相似文献

This work is dedicated to an accurate evaluation of thermodynamic and kinetics aspects of phenol degradation using wet air oxidation process. Phenol is a well known polluting molecule and therefore it is important having data of its behaviour during this process. A view cell is used for the experimental study, with an internal volume of 150 mL, able to reach pressures up to 30 MPa and temperatures up to 350 °C. Concerning the thermodynamic phase equilibria, experimental and modelling results are obtained for different binary systems (water/nitrogen, water/air) and ternary system (water/nitrogen/phenol). The best model is the Predictive Soave Redlich Kwong one. This information is necessary to predict the composition of the gas phase during the process. It is also important for an implementation in a process simulation. The second part is dedicated to kinetics evaluation of the degradation of phenol. Different compounds have been detected using GC coupled with a MS. A kinetic scheme is deduced, taking into account the evolution of phenol, hydroquinones, catechol, resorcinol and acetic acid. The kinetic parameters are calculated for this scheme. These data are important to evaluate the evolution of the concentration of the different polluting molecules during the process. A simplified kinetic scheme, which can be easily implemented in a process simulation, is also determined for the direct degradation of phenol into H2O and CO2. The Arrhenius law data obtained for the phenol disappearance are the following: k = 1.8 × 106 ± 3.9 × 105 M−1 s−1 (pre-exponential factor) and Ea = 77 ± 8 kJ mol−1 (activation energy). 相似文献

It is difficult to quantify the range in source strength reduction (MdR) that may be attainable from in situ remediation of a dense nonaqueous‐phase liquid (DNAPL) site given that available studies typically report only the median MdR without providing insights into site complexity, which is often a governing factor. An empirical study of the performance of in situ remediation at a wide range of DNAPL‐contaminated sites determined MdRs for in situ bioremediation (EISB), in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO), and thermal treatment remedies. Median MdR, geometric mean MdR, and lower/upper 95 percent confidence interval for the mean were: 49x, 105x, 20x/556x, respectively, for EISB; 9x, 21x, and 4x/110x for ISCO; and 19x, 31x, and 6x/150x for thermal treatment. Lower MdR values were determined for large, complex sites and for sites with DNAPL pool‐dominated source zones. A feasibility analysis of partial DNAPL depletion is described for a pool‐dominated source zone. Back‐diffusion from low‐hydraulic conductivity units within a pool‐dominated source zone is shown to potentially sustain a secondary source for more than 1,000 years, indicating that aggressive source treatment may not reduce the remediation timeframe. Estimated plume response demonstrates there may be no reduction in cost associated with aggressive treatment, and little difference in risk reduction associated with the various alternatives. Monitored natural attenuation (MNA) for the source zone is shown to be a reasonable alternative for the pool‐dominated source zone considered in this example. It is demonstrated that pool‐dominated source zones with a large range in initial DNAPL mass (250 to 1,500 kg) may correspond to a narrow range in source strength (20 to 30 kg/year). This demonstrates that measured source strength is nonunique with respect to DNAPL mass in the subsurface and, thus, source strength should not be used as the sole basis for predicting how much DNAPL mass remains or must be removed to achieve a target goal. If aggressive source zone treatment is to be implemented due to regulatory requirements, strategic pump‐and‐treat is shown to be most cost effective. These remedial decisions are shown to be insensitive to a range of possible DNAPL pool conditions. At sites with an existing pump‐and‐treat system, a significant increase in mass removal and source strength reduction may be achieved for a low incremental cost by strategic placement of extraction wells and pumping rate selection. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

Tree bark has been shown to be a useful biomonitor of past air quality because it accumulates atmospheric particulate matter (PM) in its outermost structure. Trace element concentrations of tree bark of more than 73 trees allow to elucidate the impact of past atmospheric pollution on the urban environment of the cities of Strasbourg and Kehl in the Rhine Valley. Compared to the upper continental crust (UCC) tree barks are strongly enriched in Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb. To assess the degree of pollution of the different sites in the cities, a geoaccumulation index Igeo was applied. Global pollution by V, Ni, Cr, Sb, Sn and Pb was observed in barks sampled close to traffic axes. Cr, Mo, Cd pollution principally occurred in the industrial area. A total geoaccumulation index IGEO-tot was defined; it is based on the total of the investigated elements and allows to evaluate the global pollution of the studied environment by assembling the Igeo indices on a pollution map. 相似文献

Along a downstream stretch of River Mureş, Romania, adult males of two feral fish species, European chub (Leuciscus cephalus) and sneep (Chondrostoma nasus) were sampled at four sites with different levels of contamination. Fish were analysed for the biochemical markers hsp70
(in liver and gills) and hepatic EROD activity, as well as several biometrical parameters (age, length, wet weight, condition
factor). None of the biochemical markers correlated with any biometrical parameter, thus biomarker reactions were related
to site-specific criteria. While the hepatic hsp70 level did not differ among the sites, significant elevation of the hsp70
level in the gills revealed proteotoxic damage in chub at the most upstream site, where we recorded the highest heavy metal
contamination of the investigated stretch, and in both chub and sneep at the site right downstream of the city of Arad. In
both species, significantly elevated hepatic EROD activity downstream of Arad indicated that fish from these sites are also
exposed to organic chemicals. The results were indicative of impaired fish health at least at three of the four investigated
sites. The approach to relate biomarker responses to analytical data on pollution was shown to fit well the recent EU demands

A Bayesian hierarchical space-time model is proposed by combining information from real-time ambient AIRNow air monitoring
data, and output from a computer simulation model known as the Community Multi-scale Air Quality (Eta-CMAQ) forecast model.
A model validation analysis shows that the model predicted maps are more accurate than the maps based solely on the Eta-CMAQ
forecast data for a 2 week test period. These out-of sample spatial predictions and temporal forecasts also outperform those
from regression models with independent Gaussian errors. The method is fully Bayesian and is able to instantly update the
map for the current hour (upon receiving monitor data for the current hour) and forecast the map for several hours ahead.
In particular, the 8 h average map which is the average of the past 4 h, current hour and 3 h ahead is instantly obtained
at the current hour. Based on our validation, the exact Bayesian method is preferable to more complex models in a real-time

Amorphous ferric oxyhydroxide is being used to treat groundwater contaminated with uranium(VI); the compound also has potential for use as a component in in situ chemical barriers. To quantitatively evaluate its effectiveness in such applications, adsorption of uranium(VI) onto amorphous ferric oxyhydroxide was experimentally investigated under a wide range of uranium(VI) (8.40·10−7−2.10·10−3 mol L−1; 0.2–500 mg L−1), sulfur(VI) (0–0.07 mol L−1; 0–2240 mg L−1) and carbon(IV) (0–0.0195 mol L−1; 0–234 mg L−1) concentrations, and pH-values (4–9.6). The adsorption behavior of uranium(VI) (uranyl ion and its complexes) is similar to that of other cations; it exhibits a sharp rise in the extent of adsorption with increasing pH. Interactions among uranyl complexes and surface sites are interpreted using a site complexation model. Although the model does not incorporate electrostatics and includes only a single type of adsorption site, it provides a reasonable match to measured adsorption and proton exchange data. The simplicity of the model and the resulting reduction in computational demand allow its efficient incorporation into coupled reaction-transport models. 相似文献

Earth, the ecosphere, is a unified functional ecosystem. Ecological land classification (ELC) and regionalization divides and categorizes this unity into similar and dissimilar pieces-sectoral ecosystems - at various scales, in the interests of admiration and understanding. The recognition of land/water ecosystems in a hierarchy of sizes provides a rational base for the many-scaled problems of protection and careful exploitation in the fields of agriculture, forestry, wildlife and recreation. In forested terrain the protection of biodiversity, old growth forests, watersheds and wildlife habitat depends on spatial-temporal planning of forestry operations to maintain a preferred mosaic structure of local ecosystems within each ecological region. Without ecological understanding and a good ELC, this is impossible. Conceiving the world as comprising nested land/water ecosystems that are the source of life, elevates the role of Earth-as-context, an antidote to destructive anthropocentrism. 相似文献
