Numerous studies have indicated a broad-based support for open space preservation and protection. Research also has characterized the public values and rationale that underlie the widespread support for open space. In recognition of the widespread public support for open space, various levels of government have implemented programs to provide public access to open space. There are many different types of open space, ranging from golf courses, ball parks, wildlife areas, and prairies, to name a few. This paper addresses questions related to the types of open space that should be prioritized by planners and natural resource managers. The results of this study are based on a stratified random sample of 5000 households in Illinois that were sent a questionnaire related to their support for various types of open space. Through a comparatively simple action grid analysis, the open space types that should be prioritized for public access include forest areas, stream corridors, wildlife habitat, and lakes/ponds. These were the open space types rated of the highest importance, yet were also the open space types rated the lowest in respondent satisfaction. This kind of analysis does not require the technical expertise of other options for land-use prioritizations (e.g., conjoint analysis, contingent valuation), yet provides important policy directives for planners. Although open space funds often allow for purchase of developed sites such as golf courses, ball parks, and community parks, this study indicates that undeveloped (or nature-based) open space lands are most needed in Illinois. 相似文献
Floodplain forests are flood-dependent ecosystems. They rely on well-timed, periodic floods for the provision of regeneration sites and on tapered flood recession curves for the successful establishment of seedlings. These overbank flood events are described as regeneration flows. Once floodplain forest trees are established, in order to grow they also require adequate, although variable, river stage levels or maintenance flows throughout the year. Regeneration flows are often synonymous with flood flows and only occur periodically. There is a disparity between this need for varied interannual flows over the decadal time frame and the usual annual cycle of flow management currently used by most river management agencies. Maintenance flows are often closer to established minimum flows and much easier to provide by current operational practices.A number of environmental flow methodologies, developed in North America, Australia, and South Africa are described in this review. They include the needs of the floodplain environment in the management and allocation of river flows. In North America, these methodologies have been put into practice in a number of river basins specifically to restore floodplain forest ecosystems. In Australia and South Africa, a series of related holistic approaches have been developed that include the needs of floodplain ecosystems as well as in-channel ecosystems. In most European countries, restoration of floodplain forests takes place at a few localized restoration sites, more often as part of a flood-defense scheme and usually not coordinated with flow allocation decisions throughout the river basin. Bioassays were conducted in 2001 and 2002 to estimate toxicities and dose-response relationships of 24 Bemisica tabaci Gennadius populations to pyriproxifen, acemitaprid, and diafenthiuron. LC50s ranging from 0.014 to 0.096 mgL(-1), 0.60 to 1.3 mgL(-1), and 3.5 to 6.7 mgL(-1) were observed respectively for pyriproxifen, acemitaprid, and diafenthiuron. These LC50s much lower than the field doses recommended for each compound. A fast increase in rates of mortality within a narrow range of lethal concentrations was observed for each compound. indicating that all three compounds were highly effective at killing whiteflies. In a separate experiment, pyriproxifen, acemitaprid, and diafenthiuron were tested in 2001 and 2002 to compare their effectiveness and assess their impact on parasitism in the field. In both years all three compounds significantly prevented B. tabaci populations from reaching economic injury levels in cotton and minimized adverse effects on parasitism. Our results provide for the first time baseline toxicological, field efficacy, and effect on parasitism data for pyriproxifen, acemitaprid, and diafenthiuron against B. tabaci in West Africa. These compounds should be included in a resistance management program of the cotton pest complex and their use should be restricted to prevent the building of resistance in B. tabaci populations. 相似文献
Tests treating soils contaminated with metal compounds and radionuclide surrogates were conducted in a DC arc melter. The soil melted, and glassy or ceramic waste forms with a separate metal phase were produced. Tests were run in the melter plenum with either air or N2 purge gases. In addition to nitrogen, the primary emissions of gases were CO2, CO, oxygen, methane, and oxides of nitrogen (NO(x)). Although the gas flow through the melter was low, the particulate concentrations ranged from 32 to 145 g/m3. Cerium, a nonradioactive surrogate for plutonium and uranium, was not enriched in the particulate matter (PM). The PM was enriched in cesium and highly enriched in lead. 相似文献
Recycling of household waste has become a very problematic area of British local government policy-making in which central government has set ambitious targets. Although local government can provide facilities for recycling, the attitudes of residents will be crucial if these targets are to be met. Accordingly, this paper outlines a framework for studying how households decide to recycle or not. The framework has been tested in Exeter in south-west England where a major survey found that respondents were much more likely to recycle if they had access to a structured kerbside recycling scheme. Many other factors influenced their attitudes and behaviours towards recycling, including their acceptance of the activity and their perception of the benefits and problems of recycling as a whole. The research uses the quantitative and qualitative data from the survey to demonstrate how individual attitudes can impact on recycling and how such research can yield useful data to enable policy-makers to adapt measures accordingly. 相似文献
Although historically abundant, the riparian poplar forests of the western prairies are now endangered as a result of the
damming and diversion of rivers in this region. Recent reports have described substantial declines of riparian poplar forests
downstream from dams in Alberta, Canada; Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, and Arizona, USA. The present report analyzes
the forest and hydrological conditions reported previously in order to clarify the causes of the downstream forest decline.
Dams were found to contribute to forest failure by (1) reducing downstream flows and/or (2) altering flow patterns to attenuate
spring flooding and/or stabilize summer flows. Reduced flows are reported to induce drought stress, which is particularly
lethal to seedlings and very old poplars. The artificial moderation of spring flooding may inhibit the formation of seedbeds
essential for seedling replenishment. Increased river valley development involving cattle grazing, agricultural clearing,
and direct harvesting of trees also contributes to forest failure.
Potential methods for mitigating the impacts of dams on downstream forests include downstream flow schedules that (1) retain
occasional spring flooding, (2) taper off rather than abruptly drop downstream flow, and (3) provide adequate flows throughout
the summer. Poplar forest stabilization and recovery can be further promoted by fencing to protect trees from livestock grazing
and trampling, or artificial site preparation such as cultivation or scarification to encourage poplar regeneration. 相似文献
Abstract: This study evaluated biological integrity expectations of fish assemblages in wadeable streams for the Alabama portion of the Choctawhatchee River watershed using a multimetric approach. Thirty‐four randomly selected stream sites were sampled in late spring 2001 to calibrate an index of biotic integrity (IBI). Validation data were collected during the spring 2001, and summer and fall of 2003 from disturbed and least‐impacted targeted sites (n = 20). Thirty‐five candidate metrics were evaluated for their responsiveness to environmental degradation. Twelve metrics were selected to evaluate wadeable streams and four replacement metrics were selected for headwater streams. Scores that ranged from 58 to 60 were considered to be representative of excellent biotic integrity (none found in this study), scores of 48‐52 as good integrity (31% of the sites in this study), 40‐44 as fair (43%), 28‐34 as poor (21%), and 12‐22 as very poor (5%). Of the four stream condition categories (urban, cattle, row crop, and least impacted), the IBI scores for urban and cattle sites differed significantly from least‐impacted sites. Row crop sites, although not significantly different from least‐impacted, tended to have greater variability than the other categories. Lower IBI scores at both urban and cattle sites suggest that the IBI accurately reflects stream impairment in the Choctawhatchee River drainage. 相似文献
Stream temperatures are key indicators for aquatic ecosystem health, and are of particular concern in highly seasonal, water‐limited regions such as California that provide sensitive habitat for cold‐water species. Yet in many of these critical regions, the combined impacts of a warmer climate and urbanization on stream temperatures have not been systematically studied. We examined recent changes in air temperature and precipitation, including during the recent extreme drought, and compared the stream temperature responses of urban and nonurban streams under four climatic conditions and the 2008–2018 period. Metrics included changes in the magnitude and timing of stream temperatures, and the frequency of exceedance of ecologically relevant thresholds. Our results showed that minimum and average daily air temperatures in the region have increased by >1°C over the past 20 years, warming both urban and nonurban streams. Stream temperatures under drought warmed most (1°C–2°C) in late spring and early fall, effectively lengthening the summer warm season. The frequency of occurrence of periods of elevated stream temperatures was greater during warm climate conditions for both urban and nonurban streams, but urban streams experienced extreme conditions 1.5–2 times as often as nonurban streams. Our findings underscore that systematically monitoring and managing urban stream temperatures under climate change and drought is critically needed for seasonal, water‐limited urban systems. 相似文献
Phosphorous (P)-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is used in the analysis of P forms in extracts of soils and manures for environmental and agronomic purposes. Quantitative spectra require knowledge about spin-lattice relaxation times (T1) to ensure adequate delays between pulses. This paper determined T1 values of P forms in reconstituted (0.2 g in 0.7 mL(-1)) samples of freeze-dried 0.25 M NaOH plus 50 mM EDTA extracts of eight diverse soils (Aquept, Dystrochrept x 2, Hapludand, Rendoll, Udand, Haplostoll, and Orthod), three different manures (dairy cattle, deer, and sheep), and one epiphyte moss. Total concentrations in the reconstituted samples ranged from 5 to 175 mg Fe mL(-1), 2 to 62 mg Mn mL(-1), and 72 to 837 mg P mL(-1). Values of T1 for orthophosphate monoesters, orthophosphate diesters, and pyrophosphate varied from 0.42 to 1.69 s in soils and from 0.89 to 2.59 s in manures and the epiphyte. In contrast, T(1) for orthophosphate varied from 0.78 to 1.94 s in soils and 1.45 to 5.82 s in manures and the epiphyte. For quantitative 31P NMR, delay times should be three to five times the T1 value, translating to delays of 3 to 5 s for soils and up to 25 s for manures. If the required delay is too long then strategies such as adding paramagnetics could shorten T1, provided this does not increase line-broadening too much. A regression relationship was obtained between orthophosphate T1 values and the ratio of P concentration to Fe and Mn concentration on a w/v basis (r2= 0.97, P < 0.001), and between the T1 for all other compound classes and the ratio of P to Fe and Mn (r2= 0.70, P < 0.01). By combining measurement of Fe, Mn, and P in the reconstituted extract and these relationships, T1 can be estimated and the appropriate delay time used. If T1 is not considered and the delay time is too short, some peaks will be under- or over-represented and the relative distribution of P forms not quantitative. 相似文献
