In order to search the degradability of kraft lignin, the potential bacterial strains Bacillus subtilis (GU193980) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (GU193981) were isolated, screened and applied in axenic and co-culture conditions. Results revealed that mixed culture showed better decolorization efficiency (80%) and reduction of pollution parameters (COD 73% and BOD 62%) than axenic culture. This indicated syntrophic growth of these two bacteria rather than any antagonistic effect. The HPLC analysis of degraded samples of kraft lignin has shown the reduction in peak area compared to control, suggesting that decrease in color intensity might be largely attributed to the degradation of lignin by isolated bacteria. Further, the GC–MS analysis showed that most of the compounds detected in control were diminished after bacterial treatment. Further, the seed germination test using Phaseolus aureus has supported the detoxification of bacterial decolorized kraft lignin for environmental safety. All these observations have revealed that the developed bacterial co-culture was capable for the effective degradation and decolorization of lignin containing rayon grade pulp mill wastewater for environmental safety. 相似文献

Selenium status in soils of northern districts of India 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The HG-AAS technique was used to estimate the soil selenium status of the agricultural lands of northern parts of India. The drier lands where lesser rains were received or where less irrigation water was available in Rajasthan and southern parts of the Haryana states had above normal soil selenium levels. These soils were also found to be alkaline. Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and northern parts of the Haryana states had normal levels of selenium in their soils, except with slightly lower selenium levels in a few areas that were affected by floods along the river Yamuna. The results were also confirmed using the ICP-OES technique. 相似文献

The environmentally friendly and safe disposal of waste discarded rubber tyres are becoming a matter of serious concern across the globe because of its detrimental effect on health, environment and ecological systems. The paper aims at assessing the impact of waste rubber tyre inclusion on the geotechnical properties of clayey soil. Discarded rubber in the form of crumb rubber of size ranging between 0.8 and 2 mm varying from 0 to 10% was used in this investigation. Several tests, namely compaction, unconfined compressive strength, split tensile strength, California bearing ratio, consolidation and swelling pressure, along with microstructural studies have been carried out on different combinations of clayey soil and crumb rubber. The results of the study demonstrate that the inclusion of crumb rubber reduces the maximum dry unit weight and optimum moisture content of the clay. The addition of crumb rubber up to 5% in the clay causes an insignificant increase in the unconfined compressive strength and split tensile strength. Compared with the clayey soil, the inclusion of crumb rubber up to 5% improves the California bearing ratio of the clayey soil in unsoaked condition. It has also noticed that addition of crumb rubber helps in reducing the compression index and swelling pressure of the clayey soil. 相似文献

The rubber degrading activity of Streptomyces sp. CFMR 7 whose whole genome sequence was recently determined was tested with non-vulcanized fresh latex and common vulcanized rubber products such as latex glove, latex condom and latex car tyre. The degradation activity was unequivocally demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy with respect to microbial colonization efficiency, disintegration of rubber material and biofilm formation after 3, 6 and 9 months of inoculation. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy comprising the attenuated total reflectance analysis on these inoculated products revealed insights into the biodegradation mechanism of this strain whereby, a decrease in the number of cis -1,4 double bonds in the polyisoprene chain, the appearance of ketone and aldehyde groups formation indicating an oxidative attack at the double bond of rubber hydrocarbon. In the presence of strain Streptomyces sp. CFMR 7, gel permeation chromatography analysis revealed a significant shift of the molecular weight distribution to lower values. Clear decrease in the molecular weight was observed over 3, 6 and 9 months of cultivation on fresh latex samples compared to other vulcanized products. No shift in the molecular weight distribution was observed for non-inoculated control. These results clearly showed that Streptomyces sp. CFMR 7 was able to cleave the carbon backbone of poly (cis -1,4-isoprene). Although this strain was able to degrade both non-vulcanized and vulcanized rubber products, faster degradation was obtained with natural rubber and rubber products with low complexity. 相似文献

Physico-chemical characteristics of the feed and optimum worm density are important parameters for the efficient working of
a vermicomposting system. Overcrowding of worms can affect the efficiency of a vermicomposting system even if all other parameters
have been optimized. This article reports the effect of stocking density and feed quality on the growth and fecundity of Eisenia fetida under laboratory conditions. The feed mixtures contained cow dung and textile mill wastewater sludge in different ratios.
Three feed mixtures and five stocking rates (1, 2, 4, 8, and 12) were tested for 12 weeks. The results showed that E. fetida growth rate was faster at higher stocking densities; however, biomass gain per worm was faster at lower stocking densities.
Sexual maturity was attained earlier at higher stocking densities. Growth rate was highest in 100% cow dung at all the stocking
densities when compared to textile mill wastewater sludge containing feed mixtures. A worm population of 27–53 worms per kg
of feed was found to be the most favorable stocking density. 相似文献

Euphorbian latex is commonly used as molluscicides and the Euphorbia milii latex was reported as most powerful molluscicidal agents. The physiological and lethal effects of the latex components of Euphorbia milii, on the intermediate host Biomphalaria spp., of the human liver parasite Schistosoma mansoni were described in this study. The standard methodologies for testing plant derived molluscicides formulated by World Health Organisation (WHO) were followed with some modifications. The young specimen of fresh water snails showed altered physiological and physical response towards latex components. The working concentration of non-proteinaceous fraction (up to 0.1%) of the latex reduced the active physiological behaviour but was non-lethal to young specimen of snails. However, proteinaceous fractions (0.1mg/l) of the latex were found lethal to snail population, and lethality was enhanced with small amount of the non-proteinaceous fraction (0.01%) of the latex. Milin, a serine protease(up to 0.1mg/l), isolated from the latex of Euphorbia milii significantly reduced the growth and feeding activity but was not lethal to young specimen of snails. With an addition of 0.01% of non-proteinaceous fractions to Milin, lethality result was similar to that of crude latex. Milin is likely to be responsible for alteration of normal physiological functions and lethality of snails, thus it may be used as a molluscicide to control transmission of the endemic disease schistosomiasis. 相似文献

In India, millions of tones of livestock excreta are produced. Our study explores the potential of an epigeic earthworm Eisenia foetida to compost different livestock excreta (cow, buffalo, horse, donkey, sheep, goat and camel) into value added product (vermicompost)
at the laboratory scale. Vermicomposting resulted in lowering of pH, electrical conductivity, potassium and C:N ratio and
increase in nitrogen and phosphorus contents. Total K was lower in the final cast than in the initial feed. C:N ratios of
the vermicomposts ranged from 16.2 ± 2.17 to 75.4 ± 6.84. Microbial activity measured as dehydrogenase activity in buffalo,
donkey and camel wastes increased with time up to day 90. But in sheep and goat wastes, maximum dehydrogenase activity was
recorded on day 60 and decreased thereafter. The cocoons and hatchlings production by Eisenia foetida in different excreta were also investigated. The greatest number and biomass of hatchlings was recorded in horse excreta
followed by cow, goat and sheep excreta. Thus, cow, horse, sheep and goat excreta show potential as good substrates in vermicomposting
using Eisenia foetida, although further research is required to explore the feasibility of use of buffalo, donkey and camel excreta in combination
with cow/sheep/goat excreta. 相似文献

The present investigation deals with fluoride removal from aqueous solution by thermally activated neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves carbon (ANC) and thermally activated kikar (Acacia arabica) leaves carbon (AKC) adsorbents. In this study neem leaves carbon and kikar leaves carbon prepared by heating the leaves at 400 degrees C in electric furnace was found to be useful for the removal of fluoride. The adsorbents of 0.3 mm and 1.0 mm sizes of neem and kikar leaves carbon was prepared by standard sieve. Batch experiments done to see the fluoride removal properties from synthetic solution of 5 ppm to study the influence of pH, adsorbent dose and contact time on adsorption efficiency The optimum pH was found to be 6 for both adsorbents. The optimum dose was found to be 0.5g/100 ml forANC (activated neem leaves carbon) and 0.7g/100 ml forAKC (activated kikar leaves carbon). The optimum time was found to be one hour for both the adsorbent. It was also found that adsorbent size of 0.3 mm was more efficient than the 1.0 mm size. The adsorption process obeyed Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The straight line of log (qe-q) vs time at ambient temperature indicated the validity of langergren equation consequently first order nature of the process involved in the present study. Results indicate that besides intraparticle diffusion there maybe other processes controlling the rate which may be operating simultaneously. All optimized conditions were applied for removal of fluoride from four natural water samples. 相似文献

The present paper deals with the toxicity of fertilizer's industrial wastewater on snake head fish Channa striatus (Bloch) previously named as Ophiocephalus sp., at different concentrations viz., 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 percent on the behavioural changes and mortality. The exposed fish showed hyperactivity viz., jumping, operculum movement, distance travelling, somersaulting at higher concentration such as 60, 80, and 100 percent within 48 hr. At lower concentrations such as 20 and 40 percent exposed fish showed hyperactivities viz., linear movement and eye movement within 48 hr. The LC50 values of industrial wastewater were also determined viz. 89, 75, 70 and 69 percent at different duration of exposure time i.e. 48, 72, 96 and 120 hr respectively. The obtained data revealed that LC50 value decreased with increase of exposure. 相似文献
