High concentration of mercury (Hg) in hair has been reported for Cambodians. To confirm the Hg contamination occurring through intake, Hg concentrations were determined in both hair and blood of residents (n=20) from Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Mercury concentrations in the hair and blood were 0.69-190microg g(-1) dry wt and 5.2-58microg l(-1), respectively, which were lower than those from Hg contaminated or high fish intake regions, but were higher than those from non-contaminated regions. Some female subjects had hair and blood Hg levels exceeding the threshold values for neurotoxic effects. Interestingly, serum estrone and estradiol levels were positively correlated with blood Hg level for both males and females, indicating possible induction of female hormones by Hg exposure in Cambodians. 相似文献

A laboratory-scale biofiltration system, the rotatory-switching biofilter (RSB), was operated for 199 days using toluene as a model pollutant. The target gaseous pollutant for the biofiltration experiment was approximately 300 ppmv of toluene. Toluene removal efficiency (RE, %) was initially approximately 20% with a 247-ppmv concentration (0.9 g m(-3)) of toluene during the first 10 days. Although the RE decreased several times whenever nitrogen was consumed, it again reached almost 100% when the nitrogen source was in sufficient supply. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis was employed to assess the transformation ofmicroflora during operation of the biofilter The results based on a 16S rRNA gene profile showed that the microbial community structure changed with operation time. Although the microflora changed during the initial period (before day 40), transformation of the bacterial component was hardly observed after day 51. Statistical analyses of the DGGE profiles indicated that the bacterial community was almost unaffected by the environmental factors, such as adding ozone, high-level nitrogen supply, increase of loading toluene, and the shutdown of the RSB. The DGGE profile using tmoA-like genes, which encode proteins belonging to the hydroxylase component mono-oxygenases involved in the initial attack of aerobic benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene degradation, confirmed the existence of toluene-degrading bacteria. There were at least four kinds of toluene-degradable bacteria having tmoA-like genes up to day 36, which decreased to two species after day 40. Sequence analysis after DGGE profiling revealed that Burkholderia cepacia, Sphingobacterium multivorum, and Pseudomonas putida were present in the biofilter. Only Alicycliphilus denitrificans was present throughout the whole operation period. In the initial stage of operating the RSB, many types of bacteria may have tried to adapt to the conditions, and subsequently, only selected bacteria were able to grow and to degrade toluene. 相似文献

An individual pollinator may tend to consecutively probe more flowers on a plant to which it returns at shorter intervals than other plants. In a large net cage, I let individually marked bumble bees forage on flowering heads of red clovers arranged in 37 bottles (plants), each of which was monitored by an observer to record every visit and probe for 2.5 h on each of 3 days. The data of collective visits by marked individuals revealed that the bees had their own foraging areas, in which they visited a set of plants frequently and others less often, i.e., the same individual bee repeatedly returned to certain plants as a regular visitor while sampling others as an occasional visitor. I further found that as a regular visitor, an individual bee tended to probe more flowering heads on familiar plants while probing fewer on unfamiliar plants as an occasional visitor. The mean number of consecutive probes by a bee was also positively correlated with its activity (the total number of plant visits made during the observation period). The fact that each bee behaves differently on different plants indicates that the same individual pollinator can exert different influence on the reproductive success of each plant: apparently, a pollinator likely reduces the potential for geitonogamous self-pollination when foraging as an occasional visitor. Attracting occasional visitors therefore may be beneficial for plants to avoid geitonogamy. We report the development of a new spatially explicit individual-based Dynamic Global Vegetation Model (SEIB–DGVM), the first DGVM that can simulate the local interactions among individual trees within a spatially explicit virtual forest. In the model, a sample plot is placed at each grid box, and then the growth, competition, and decay of each individual tree within each plot is calculated by considering the environmental conditions for that tree as it relates to the trees that surround it. Based on these parameters only, the model simulated time lags between climate change and vegetation change. This time lags elongated when original biome was forest, because existing trees prevent newly establish trees from receiving enough sunlight and space to quickly replace the original vegetation. This time lags also elongated when horizontal heterogeneity of sunlight distribution was ignored, indicating the potential importance of horizontal heterogeneity for predicting transitional behavior of vegetation under changing climate. On a local scale, the model reproduced climate zone-specific patterns of succession, carbon dynamics, and water flux, although on a global scale, simulations were not always in agreement with observations. Because the SEIB–DGVM was formulated to the scale at which field biologists work, the measurements of relevant parameters and data comparisons are relatively straightforward, and the model should enable more robust modeling of terrestrial ecosystems. 相似文献

The population structures of Buccinum tsubai and Neptunea constricta were compared using partial sequences of the mitochondrial COI gene. B. tsubai included four genetically distinguishable subpopulations (Hokkaido, Yamagata-Toyama, Yamato Bank, and San’in), which is consistent
with the results of our previous study using mitochondrial 16SrRNA sequences. The genetic structure of N. constricta was also clear, but the lineage sorting corresponding to the geographical distribution was not as clear as that of B. tsubai. The difference between the genetic structures of these two species might be due to a difference in either their dispersal
abilities or the historic distribution patterns in the Sea of Japan. The fossil record and nested clade analyses support the
latter alternative. The four subpopulations of B. tsubai are estimated to have diverged 0.42–1.46 million years ago, providing support for the existence of intermediate water of
normal salinity and oxygen concentration capable of sustaining B. tsubai between the low-salinity surface water and anoxic deep water during the Pleistocene glacial periods. The genetic diversity
of the Yamato Bank subpopulation of B. tsubai was lower than that of the other subpopulations, which is likely attributable to the small size of the Yamato Bank subpopulation. 相似文献

We investigated the growth and reproductive biology of the penaeid shrimp Trachysalambria curvirostris in Tokyo Bay, Japan, by monthly bottom-trawl surveys from May 2002 to December 2004. We also examined oogenesis in T. curvirostris by histological observation of the ovary. Females grew faster and attained a larger body size for age than males. The growth
rate was high in summer and low in winter and was likely to be associated with seasonal changes in water temperature. The
carapace length (CL) at which 50% of females contained vitellogenic oocytes was estimated to be 17.0 mm. The reproductive
season extended from May to October. Young-of-the-year appeared in October and could be traced across the months on CL histograms
to the following September or October, indicating a 1-year life cycle. This extended reproductive season, together with our
observation of asynchronous development of oocytes in the ovary, suggests that multiple spawning by individual females may
occur during the reproductive season. Postovulated oocytes were not found among the samples we collected during the daytime,
suggesting that final oocyte maturation and spawning occur at night. Cortical crypts in the cytoplasm of the oocyte, considered
to be a general feature of oogenesis in penaeid shrimps, were not found in T. curvirostris, even in oocytes undergoing germinal vesicle breakdown. This result implies that the cortical reaction after spawning of
T. curvirostris may be different from that of other penaeid shrimps. 相似文献

Inadvertent selection is an important genetic process that frequently occurs during laboratory culture. The mass-reared strain of the sweet potato weevil Cylas formicarius exhibits stronger inbreeding depression than the wild strain does. When inbreeding depression occurs in a population, mating with a close relative is often considered maladaptive; however, in some contexts, the inclusive fitness benefits of inbreeding may outweigh the costs, favoring individuals that tolerate a low level of inbreeding depression. Theory predicts that mass-reared strain weevils will avoid inbreeding while wild strain weevils will tolerate inbreeding. To examine this prediction, we compared the effect of relatedness on the mating and insemination successes in mass-reared and wild strains of C. formicarius. While close relative pairs of the wild strain copulated less frequently than non-kin pairs, almost all mass-reared strain pairs copulated irrespective of relatedness. The results showed that the strain with weak inbreeding depression (wild strain) avoided inbreeding, whereas the strain with strong inbreeding depression (mass-reared strain) tolerated inbreeding. The contradiction between the theoretical prediction and our results is discussed from the perspective of laboratory adaptation, mating systems, and life history of C. formicarius. 相似文献

Analysing soil microbial communities is often hampered by DNA adsorption on soil organic compounds such as humic acids. However
the role of humic acids in DNA adsorption and stability in soils remains controversial. To characterize DNA–humic acid interactions,
we studied DNA adsorption on two commercially available humic acids and a soil humic acid extracted from an Andosol. Desorption
of the adsorbed DNA using 4 different solutions—distilled water, 0.1 M NaCl, 0.1 M sodium phosphate buffer (pH 6.0), and 1%
sodium dodecyl sulfate solution—was also studied to understand the mechanism of DNA adsorption on humic acids. Here, we show
that humic acids play an important role in DNA adsorption to soils. DNA molecules were adsorbed on the humic acids, with adsorption
increasing proportionally with the DNA concentrations in the solution. The adsorption on all humic acid samples was fitted
with Freundlich equation, and the parameters obtained from the equation indicated a high affinity between the humic acids
and DNA molecules. The total amount of DNA desorbed by the 4 solutions was less than 2% of the total DNA adsorbed on all the
humic acids. The results demonstrate that DNA molecules are able to bind strongly to humic acids by ligand binding, hydrophobic

An analytical method for the determination of gaseous and particulate chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (ClPAHs) was investigated. By means of this method, concentrations and isomer profiles of the 27 target ClPAHs could be analyzed. To evaluate the usefulness of the method for analyzing ClPAH emissions, laboratory-scale scorching tests were performed on polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) plastic wrap over a flame of the gas burner. Only seven of the target ClPAHs were detected, and all compounds detected had 2, 3, or 4 rings. The detected ClPAHs were present in both the particulate phase and the gaseous phase, but they were present at higher concentrations in the gaseous phase than in the particulate phase. Relationships between the number of chlorine substituents on the naphthalene/phenanthrene rings and the overall concentration and the percentage in the particulate phase were also investigated. 相似文献
