The Laurentian Great Lakes represent 20 percent of the surface fresh water of the world. They are unique because of their long flushing times (in excess of 175 years for Lake Superior), their relatively short mixing times and their consequent propensity to accumulate persistent chemicals and respond very slowly to decreased chemical loadings. Lake Ontario, as the last lake in the system, receives the drainage from the other four Great Lakes in addition to significant chemical contributions from within its drainage basin particularly from its main tributary, the Niagara River.

This paper evaluates environmental levels of TCOD and related compounds within the Lake Ontario ecosystem by considering temporal trends, the application of mass loading principles for large lake ecosystems and the examination of a holistic ecosystem perspective on exposure routes.  相似文献

During 1983 and 1984, The Dow Chemical Company conducted a study to determine the extent of dioxin contamination at its Midland, Michigan plant and the surrounding area. The primary objectives of this study were to identify, rank order, and when possible quantify potential sources of dioxins to the environment and also to determine the extent of contamination in areas affected by the Dow facility. Early in the study, it was estimated that approximately 0.6g/year of 2378-TCDD was being emitted in 2.5 × 1010L of wastewater effluent. Data will describe observed sources of TCDD (both current and historical), environmental levels, existing water treatment methods, control measures taken, and future improvements on the water system to reduce TCDD in the effluent.  相似文献

The bioconcentration factors (BCFs) of 2,3,7,8-TCDD in adipose tissue of rats, beef cattle and monkeys have been calculated. The bioconcentration potential of TCDD in man was calculated by two indirect methods: 1) from daily intake of TCDD and its measured concentrations in adipose tissues and 2) from measured half-life and measured concentrations in body fat at steady state using a linear one compartment pharmacokinetic model. The BCFs in humans calculated by both methods are between 104 and 206, or 153, respectively.  相似文献

Polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) elicit a number of common biologic and toxic responses which are triggered by their initial binding to a cytosolic receptor protein. These effects include the induction of several cytochrome P-448 dependent monooxygenases (eg, aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase, AHH), body weight loss and thymic atrophy. The dose-response effects of selected PCDFs on AHH induction in rat hepatoma H-4-II E cells and cytosolic receptor binding affinities have been determined. The results of these and studies demonstrate the remarkable effects of structure on the activity of PCDFs. A systematic study of each of the four different position for chlorine substitution in the dibenzofuran ring system showed that the toxic and biologic potencies of these compounds varied with respect to differential chlorine substitution at all four position, i.e. C-3(7) > C-2(8) >C-4(6) > C-1(9). SARs for PCDDs confirmed the importance of the lateral CI substituents and also showed that 1,2(or 6,7-) substituted PCDDs were more active than the corresponding 1,3-dichloro analogs. In addition, there were significant decreases in activity with increasing non-lateral CI substitution. The SARs for PCDFs were different from the PCDDs and this was directly related to the asymmetric structure of the former group of compounds.  相似文献

The ban of commonly used soil fumigants, DBCP and EDB, for control of nematodes in pineapple fields has prompted investigations into a non-fumigant nematicide, fenamiphos (Nemacur®). The transformation and adsorption in soil of fenamiphos and its transformation products, f. sulfoxide and f. sulfone were studied in the laboratory. Fenamiphos adsorption on soil exceeded that of f. sulfoxide and f. sulfone. F. sulfoxide, however, was the most persistent. A one-dimensional simulation model was used to assess the impact of transformation and adsorption on the mobility and distribution of fenamiphos and f. sulfoxide in soil. Simulated results showed that fenamiphos stayed in the topsoil and transformed rapidly to f. sulfoxide. Because of the persistence and mobility of f. sulfoxide, this metabolite leached rapidly and significant amounts remained in the soil. This suggests that for times exceeding three weeks, f. sulfoxide may be the dominant compound providing nematode control in drip-irrigated pineapple.  相似文献

Sawmill workers in British Columbia (B.C.), Canada, have been exposed to chlorophenate fungicides which are known to be contaminated with polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs). Due to concern about the potential of these workers to have significant body burdens of PCDD/Fs, and the absence of measurements in these worker, a single-compartment pharmacokinetic model was developed to estimate the concentration of PCDD/Fs in the fat tissue of the sawmill workers. Data from a large cohort of B.C. sawmill workers and literature-based data on chlorophenate exposures and PCDD/F concentrations in chlorophenates were used in Monte Carlo simulations to predict a PCDD/F body burden distribution. The median concentrations of HxCDF and HpCDF predicted using the model for the B.C. sawmill worker population exceeded the range measured in unexposed populations. PeCDF and OCDF concentrations exceeded the range measured in unexposed populations at the 70th percentile of the model-predicted distribution, and PeCDD at the 90th percentile. The primary limitation of the model was the scarcity of input data about actual dermal and inhalation exposures to chlorophenates.  相似文献

The three most toxic coplanar PCB congeners PCB 77, 126 and 169 as well as 7 mono-and di-ortho-PCBs (PCB 28, 52, 101, 118, 153, 138, 180) were measured in 19 sewage sludges. Concentrations of the coplanar PCBs ranged between 231–5050 ng/kg dw for PCB 77, 43–1511 ng/kg dw for PCB 126 and 29–273 ng/kg dw for PCB 169. Comparable results were obtained with mass selective detection in the single ion monitoring mode (MSD-SIM) except for PCB 169, where MSD-SIM was less sensitive than ECD. The sum of the 7 mono-and di-ortho-PCBs, which are routinely measured as representatives of the PCB fraction, reached levels between 43–550 μg/kg dw and agreed well with results previously obtained in our laboratory. Based on our data, a selective accumulation of the coplanar PCBs could not be observed. Sludges that received industrial effluents clearly showed higher PCB levels than rural ones. Finally, calculation of TEQ equivalents of the coplanar PCBs in the sewage sludges revealed that, based on application rates normally used in Switzerland, the contribution of the sludges to soil pollution seems to be of minor importance.  相似文献

Lindane, a highly persistent and lipophilic pesticide, is still used in large quantities. This chemical can be found with appreciable concentrations in biota, atmosphere, and in other environmental compartments in the adsorbed form. This information provided a basis for assessing the simulation performances of CHEMFRANCE, a regional level III fugacity model allowing to generate environmental behavior profile of organic chemicals in France. The comparison between the estimated environmental fate and field and laboratory observations suggests that this fugacity model can be used to determine the processes that control the environmental fate of lindane in France. CHEMFRANCE also provides accurate estimates of environmental compartment contaminations.  相似文献

Seedling growth and nutritional status have been shown to be sensitive to ozone, but the influence of multi-season ozone exposure on mature tree growth and nutrition has not been examined. To determine if seedlings and mature trees were similarly affected by ozone exposure, growth and nutrient concentrations in northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) 4-year-old seedlings and 32-year-old mature trees were examined after treatment with subambient, ambient and twice ambient concentrations of ozone for three growing seasons. SUM00 values summed over the three growing seasons were 147, 255 and 507 ppm-h, respectively, for the subambient, ambient and twice ambient exposures. For mature trees, no influence of ozone treatment on lower stem diameter growth, stem growth within the mid-canopy and foliar biomass was observed. Seedling height was increased by ozone, but biomass and diameter were unaffected. A reduction in the specific leaf weight of leaves in response to ozone coincident with the loss of recurrent flushing was observed in seedlings. Ozone exposure reduced foliar nitrogen concentrations and increased woody tissue nutrient concentrations in seedlings and mature trees at the end of the third growing season. These results suggest an influence of ozone on retranslocation processes in seedlings and mature trees.  相似文献

Ambient concentrations of ozone (O(3)) and carbon dioxide (CO(2)) were measured at locations from the forest floor to the top of the canopy in a deciduous forest at the Moshannon State Forest in northcentral Pennsylvania. O(3) concentrations were measured from May-September for three years (1993-1995) while CO(2) concentrations were measured only during July and August of 1994. O(3) concentrations increased steadily during the day at all locations, peaking during the middle to late afternoon hours. O(3) concentrations then steadily declined to their lowest point, just before dawn. Vertical O(3) concentration gradients varied seasonally and among years. However, O(3) concentrations were highest within the forest canopy and lowest at the forest floor, with an average difference of approximately 13%. Differences in O(3) concentrations between the canopy and forest floor were greatest at night. O(3) concentrations were slightly higher at locations within the canopy than above the canopy. CO(2) concentrations were consistenly higher near the forest floor and were higher above the canopy than within the canopy. CO(2) concentrations were higher at night than during the day at all locations, especially near the forest floor.  相似文献
