Abstract

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are among the environmental pollutants that have very high carcinogenic and mutagenic activity. Among hundreds of different PAHs, 17 are considered priority pollutants and routinely monitored for regulatory purposes. Extended periods of exposure and expensive clean-up costs are typically associated with the vast majority of processes used for the remediation of areas contaminated with PAHs. The results of this study indicate that bioremediation via vermicomposting could be an effective method for remedying soils contaminated with toxic organic compounds, such as PAHs. This study was conducted over 90?days in the presence of various quantities of organic matter (cattle manure) to recover soils contaminated with PAHs. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was applied to identify PAHs. An evaluation of the toxicity of the final material and the transformation of the organic matter throughout the process was also conducted. The data presented here suggest a relationship between the molar mass of the PAHs and the ability of the vermicomposting process to promote biodegradation. These results suggest that vermicomposting has great potential to be utilized as a tool for the bioremediation of soils impacted by PAHs.  相似文献

This paper reports the effect of ultraviolet radiation on the degradation of pesticide ethyl parathion in the presence of humic acids. Ethyl parathion was completely degraded in 300 min using an artificial lamp of 7.41 × 10? 10 einstein/s. Humic acid from peat did not influence the photochemical rate (k = 8.92 × 10?3 min). However, in the presence of aquatic humic acid, the photochemical rate was higher (11.5 × 10?3 min). The analytical determinations show the presence of p-nitrophenol and aminophenol in the reaction medium during the photochemical experiments. The kinetic of degradation in all experiments obeyed a first-order reaction pattern.  相似文献

Ultrasonography for the screening of Down syndrome was first introduced about 25 years ago. Different combinations of markers detectable at second-trimester ultrasonography have been proposed under the banner of ‘genetic sonogram’. In recent years, several developments in first-trimester screening and the recent introduction of noninvasive prenatal testing for aneuploidy screening have had important implications for the prevalence of these conditions in the second-trimester and the screening performance of a genetic sonogram. Several second-trimester sonographic markers for Down syndrome have been reported; meta-analysis has shown that the most powerful predictors are mild ventriculomegaly, increased nuchal fold, hyperechoic bowel, and absent or hypoplastic nasal bone. Whereas use of individual markers should be discouraged and scoring systems of multiple markers are now obsolete, use of combined likelihood ratio and logistic regression analysis formulae provides better accuracy. However, there is significant heterogeneity in results among studies. Despite such limitations, the genetic sonogram will continue to have a place in prenatal screening, particularly in twin and higher-order multiple pregnancies, in countries with limited access to the most recent genetic screening tests, in cases with borderline results at maternal serum screening tests, and as noninvasive supplementary test for high-risk women reluctant to undergo invasive diagnostic testing. © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

At reduced salinities, brooding females of some gastropods and bivalves may isolate their mantle cavities from the environment for several days, maintaining internal osmotic concentration but causing severe declines in dissolved oxygen and pH, and increases in ammonia and other toxic substances in the mantle fluid. This study in November–December examined the immediate consequences of such stresses for brooded embryos of Quempillén estuary gastropod Crepipatella dilatata, in terms of time to juvenile emergence and rates of embryonic growth [measured as shell length (SL)]. Juveniles were also monitored for latent effects on feeding rates, oxygen consumption, and growth for the first 4 weeks after emergence into normal salinity seawater. An acute salinity stress lasting 3 days applied to females that were brooding pre-shelled or intermediate-shelled stages increased embryonic incubation periods, but without affecting SL at emergence. Growth rates were reduced for encapsulated embryos regardless of the stage at which the salinity stress was applied. Latent effects on juvenile development included slower shell growth and reduced rates of oxygen consumption and feeding. These effects were sustained for the first month after release from the female. The results suggest that marked reductions in salinity lasting for several days indirectly but negatively affect the development of brooded embryos of C. dilatata and also affect the juveniles for at least several weeks following their release, even after salinity has returned to normal.  相似文献

The reproductive behavior of male gray seals (Halichoerus grypus) breeding on land-fast ice at Amet Island, Nova Scotia, was studied. Data on energy expenditure (rate of mass loss over time) were collected. The average time budget of males at Amet Island was comparable to that of land-breeding males. The behavior of males showed seasonal changes, with a decrease in the proportion of time spent in the water and an increase in agonistic behavior during the peak mating period. The estimated amount of body mass lost over the season ranged between 25.6 and 77.1 kg, and the estimated percent of initial body mass lost ranged between 7.7 and 26.5% (n=10). The maximum number of observed copulations for an individual male was nine. Only 15 out of 42 males observed during 1992 and 1993 were seen copulating. The number of observed copulations per male was strongly correlated with success in remaining close to, or attending, females (r=0.91, P<0.001, n=42). The mean duration of attendance was 4.5 ± 5.54 days (n=42). Large size was not an important factor in determining attendance success, but reproductive effort (the estimated proportion of body mass lost over the season) and success in agonistic interactions with other males were both correlated with male success.  相似文献

Column experiments and numerical simulation were conducted to test the hypothesis that iron material having a high corrosion rate is not beneficial for the long-term performance of iron permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) because of faster passivation of iron and greater porosity loss close to the influent face of the PRBs. Four iron materials (Connelly, Gotthart-Maier, Peerless, and ISPAT) were used for the column experiments, and the changes in reactivity toward cis-dichloroethene (cis-DCE) degradation in the presence of dissolved CaCO3 were evaluated. The experimental results showed that the difference in distribution of the accumulated precipitates, resulting from differences in iron corrosion rate, caused a difference in the migration rate of the cis-DCE profiles and a significant difference in the pattern of passivation, indicating a faster passivation in the region close to the influent end for the material having a higher corrosion rate. For the numerical simulation, the accumulation of secondary minerals and reactivity loss of iron were coupled using an empirically-derived relationship that was incorporated into a multi-component reactive transport model. The simulation results provided a reasonable representation of the evolution of iron reactivity toward cis-DCE treatment and the changes in geochemical conditions for each material, consistent with the observed data. The simulations for long-term performance were also conducted to further test the hypothesis and predict the differences in performance over a period of 40 years under typical groundwater conditions. The predictions showed that the cases of higher iron corrosion rates had earlier cis-DCE breakthrough and more reduction in porosity starting from near the influent face, due to more accumulation of carbonate minerals in that region. Therefore, both the experimental and simulation results appear to support the hypothesis and suggest that reactivity changes of iron materials resulting from evolution of geochemical conditions should be considered in the design of iron PRBs.  相似文献
