A chorion villus sample (CVS) biopsied at 11 weeks' gestation for raised nuchal translucency, revealed monosomy X (presumptive 45,X karyotype) by QF-PCR for rapid aneuploidy testing for chromosomes 13, 18, 21, X and Y. Long-term culture gave the karyotype: 47,XY,+ 21[66]/49,XYY,+ 21,+ 21 [22]. This discrepancy prompted redigestion of the combined residual villus fragments from the original QF-PCR assay. The repeat QF-PCR assay identified the presence of trisomy 21 and a Y chromosome consistent with a 47,XY,+ 21 karyotype. A double non-disjunction event early in embryogenesis in a 47,XY,+ 21 conceptus with subsequent cell lineage compartmentalisation of the three observed cell lines (45,X; 47,XY,+ 21 and 49,XYY,+ 21,+ 21) would account for these results. This is the first reported case to describe complete discrepancy at diagnosis between abnormal karyotypes detected by QF-PCR rapid aneuploidy testing and a cultured karyotype in the same CVS. Experts can provide valuable information to fill knowledge gaps in published research on management effectiveness, particularly for threatened ecosystems, for which there is often limited evidence and the need for prompt intervention to ensure their persistence. One such ecosystem, alpine peatland, is threatened by climate change and other pressures, provides vital ecosystem services, and supports unique biodiversity. In a workshop, we gathered and synthesized into an accessible format information from experts on interventions used, threat context, and intervention effectiveness for Australian alpine peatland and used this knowledge to evaluate local relevance of the global literature for this threatened ecosystem. Experts identified 15 interventions used to conserve Australian peatlands, most of which enhanced or restored peatland condition and effectively addressed diverse threats. Experts’ perspectives and global studies were strongly aligned, suggesting that research on peatland management may be broadly relevant across contexts, despite the distinct characteristics of Australian systems. Our workshop-based expert elicitation approach provided insights into current management practices unavailable in the literature. 相似文献

Changes in the phytoplankton population caused by a wind-induced mesoscale eddy, first located off the Hawaiian chain on 29 August 1989, were examined from 6 to 12 September 1989. These cyclonic eddies produce upwelling of nutrient-rich water into the photic zone which may induce changes in the distribution of phytoplankton. The eddy affected the depth, magnitude and composition of the chlorophyll maximum. The eddy produced an upward shift in the distribution of phytoplankton, shoaling the chlorophyll maximum to 30 m. Pigment concentrations at the chlorophyll maximum were enriched up to 2.2 times inside the eddy. Outside the eddy, the upper mixed layer (UML, 50 m) was dominated by cyanobacteria whereas the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) was dominated by prochlorophytes, chlorophytes and chrysophytes. Inside the eddy, the UML showed an increase in deep water taxa but little change in cyanobacteria. The observed population changes probably resulted from increased growth rates and vertical transport of cells. Based on projections of the track of the eddy, we inferred that its trail created an area of enhanced chlorophyll that was not quickly consumed, and concluded that coupling between phytoplankton and grazers was weak. The presence of such cyclonic eddies may explain some of the variability in chlorophyll concentration found in the oligotrophic subtropical Pacific. 相似文献

In 1997, Maryland had no available ambient Federal Reference Method data on particulate matter less than 2.5 microm in aerodynamic diameter (PM23), but did have annual ambient data for PM smaller than 10 microm (PM10) at 24 sites. The PM10 data were analyzed in conjunction with local annual and seasonal zip-code-level emission inventories and with speciated PM2.5 data from four nearby monitors in the IMPROVE network (located in the national parks, wildlife refuges, and wilderness areas) in an effort to estimate annual average and seasonal high PM2.5 concentrations at the 24 PM10 monitor sites operating from 1992 to 1996. All seasonal high concentrations were estimated to be below the 24-hr PM2.5 National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) at the sites operating in Maryland between 1992 and 1996. The estimates also indicated that 12 monitor sites might exceed the 3-year annual average PM2.5 NAAQS of 15 microg/m3, but Maryland's air quality shows signs that it has been improving since 1992. The estimates also were compared with actual measurements after the PM2.5 monitor network was installed. The estimates were adequate for describing the chemical composition of the PM2.5, forecasting compliance status with the 24-hr and annual standards, and determining the spatial variations in PM2.5 across central Maryland. 相似文献

The requirements of the Texas State Implementation Plan of the U.S. Clean Air Act for the Houston-Galveston Ozone Nonattainment Area stipulate large reductions in oxides of nitrogen (NO(x)) emissions. A large number of sources at Dow Chemical Co. sites within the nonattainment area may require the addition of continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMS) for online analysis of NO(x), CO, and O2. At the outset of this work, it was not known whether the analyzers could accurately measure NO(x) as low as 2 ppm. Therefore, NO(x) CEMS analyzers from five different companies were evaluated for their ability to reliably measure NO(x) in the 2-20 ppm range. Testing was performed with a laboratory apparatus that accurately simulated different mixtures of flue gas and, on a limited basis, simulated a dual-train sampling system on a gas turbine. The results indicate that this method is a reasonable approach for analyzer testing and reveal important technical performance aspects for accurate NO(x) measurements. Several commercial analyzers, if installed in a CEMS application with sampling conditioning components similar to those used in this study, can meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's measurement data quality requirements for accuracy. 相似文献

In population exposure studies, personal exposure to PM is typically measured as a 12- to 24-hr integrated mass concentration. To better understand short-term variation in personal PM exposure, continuous (1-min averaging time) nephelometers were worn by 15 participants as part of two U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) longitudinal PM exposure studies conducted in Baltimore County, MD, and Fresno, CA. Participants also wore inertial impactor samplers (24-hr integrated filter samples) and recorded their daily activities in 15-min intervals. In Baltimore, the nephelometers correlated well (R2 = 0.66) with the PM2.5 impactors. Time-series plots of personal nephelometer data showed each participant's PM exposure to consist of a series of peaks of relatively short duration. Activities corresponding to a significant instrument response included cooking, outdoor activities, transportation, laundry, cleaning, shopping, gardening, moving between microenvironments, and removing/putting on the instrument. On average, 63-66% of the daily PM exposure occurred indoors at home (about 2/3 of which occurred during waking hours), primarily due to the large amount of time spent in that location (an average of 72-77%). Although not a reference method for measuring mass concentration, the nephelometer did help identify PM sources and the relative contribution of those sources to an individual's personal exposure. 相似文献

We measured growth of larval Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus in terms of mass, volume, and weight in water as well as the mass-specific activities of the metabolic enzymes citrate synthase, lactate dehydrogenase, and malate dehydrogenase. Weight in water, the force the fish must exert to maintain vertical position, increases by a factor of 18 in larvae growing from 10 to 15 mm. The weight increase coincides with the development of the larval swim bladder. The activities of all three enzymes per unit mass of fish tissue decline greatly over this time period, indicating that the fish does not further develop its aerobic and anaerobic metabolic capacity for swimming during this growth interval. 相似文献

An environmental electrochemistry workshop program on metal ion removal is described. The program was designed for undergraduate students in chemistry, chemical engineering or environmental science and teaches environmental electrochemistry through a combination of hands-on experiments, understanding of research concepts, completion of project reports and in class discussion. The students are encouraged to quantitatively describe the performance of the electrochemical cells (containing 2-D and 3-D carbon cathodes) and to consider the advantages and shortcomings of electrochemical routes to environmental treatment. 相似文献

Under long-term (24 h) control measurements, significant urea was excreted (15 to 90% of excreted nitrogen) byOpsanus beta (Goode and Bean) collected in 1989 from Biscayne Bay, Florida, USA. Urea excretion rates and plasma urea concentrations were not affected by antibiotic treatments which decreased intestinal microbe populations. These results suggest that nitrogen recycling by gut microbe urease is probably not significant in this species. Urea excretion rates increased significantly following 8 h of air-exposure and in response to high levels of NH4Cl. These results suggest that urea is synthesized and excreted by the toadfish primarily in situations that limit ammonia excretion. Thus, the ornithineurea cycle in the toadfish liver primarily maintains low concentrations of ammonia within the fish. High levels of variability in urea excretion rates and variation in response to air-exposure suggest that urea synthetic rates are affected by immediate past environmental conditions. 相似文献
