We studied the effects of elevated heavy metal uptake on the sperm quality and the antioxidant mechanisms of sperm and testis of red deer from a Pb mining area in Spain. Testis, liver and bone of red deer from mining (n = 21) and control (n = 20) areas were obtained from hunters and analyzed for Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd, As and Se. Testes were weighed and measured. Motility, acrosome integrity and viability and functionality of membrane were evaluated in epididymal spermatozoa. Lipid peroxidation, total glutathione, glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were studied in testis and spermatozoa. Deer from mined areas showed less Cu in testis, a higher testis mass and size and reduced spermatozoa membrane viability and acrosome integrity. Effects on sperm quality were associated to decreased Cu and increased Se in testis, and to decreases in the activity of SOD and GPX in testis and spermatozoa. 相似文献

This investigation was performed to determine the effect of physicochemical soil properties on penoxsulam, molinate, bentazon, and MCPA adsorption–desorption processes. Four soils from Melozal (35° 43′ S; 71° 41′ W), Parral (36° 08′ S; 71° 52′ W), San Carlos (36° 24′ S; 71° 57′ W), and Panimavida (35° 44′ S; 71° 24′ W) were utilized. Herbicide adsorption reached equilibrium after 4 h in all soils. The Freundlich L-type isotherm described the adsorption process, which showed a high affinity between herbicides and sorption sites mainly because of hydrophobic and H-bonds interaction. Penoxsulam showed the highest adsorption coefficients (4.23 ± 0.72 to 10.69 ± 1.58 mL g?1) and were related to soil pH. Molinate showed Kd values between 1.72 ± 0.01 and 2.3 ± 0.01 mL g?1and were related to soil pH and organic matter, specifically to the amount of humic substances. Bentazon had a high relationship with pH and humic substances and its Kd values were the lowest, ranging from 0.11 ± 0.01 to 0.42 ± 0.01 mL g?1. MCPA Kd ranged from 0.14 ± 0.02 to 2.72 ± 0.01 mL g?1, however its adsorption was related to humic acids and clay content. According to these results, the soil factors that could explain the sorption process of the studied herbicides under paddy rice soil conditions, were principally humic substances and soil pH. Considering the sorption variability observed in this study and the potential risk for groundwater contamination, it is necessary to develop weed rice management strategies that limit use of herbicides that exhibit low soil adsorption in areas with predisposing conditions to soil leaching. 相似文献

The leaching of salt and mineral elements from three composts prepared with residual vegetable crop biomass (melon, pepper or zucchini) was studied using methacrylate columns and distilled water. The benefits of the leached composts to be used for ornamental potted plant production were also analysed. After leaching 5 container capacities of effluent, both the electrical conductivity and the concentration of soluble mineral elements in compost leachates decreased substantially and remained close to the target levels. Composts reacted differently to leaching due to differences in the raw waste sources and the composting process and hence, in their physical and chemical characteristics. At the end of the experiment, after pouring 8 container capacities of water, the leaching efficiency of the salts was 96%, 93% and 87% for melon, pepper and zucchini-based composts, respectively. Mineral elements differed in their ability to be removed from the composts; N (NH4+ and NO3?), K+, Na+, Cl?, and SO42? were leached readily, whereas H2PO4?, Ca2+, and Mg2+ were removed hardly. Leached composts showed a range of physico-chemical and chemical characteristics suitable for use as growing media constituents. Potted Calendula and Calceolaria plants grew in the substrates prepared with the leached composts better than in those made with the non-leached ones. The role of habitat complexity has been widely neglected in the study of meiofaunal community patterns. We studied the intertidal
nematode community of a structurally complex macrotidal beach exhibiting contrasting microhabitats (sandbars and runnels)
to understand the influence of environmental gradients and habitat heterogeneity in the community structure. We tested whether
topographical complexity affected (1) the zonation pattern in terms of abundance and diversity, and (2) local diversity by
promoting compartmentalization into distinct faunal groups. Our analyses revealed three major faunal assemblages along the
exposure gradient associated to differences in mean grain size and chlorophyll a. Diversity patterns involved a mid-intertidal peak, consistent with the intermediate disturbance hypothesis, and another
peak at the limit with the subtidal region, consistent with the transition zone. These results highlight the predominance
of environmental gradients in establishing intertidal zonation. However, microhabitats differed in environmental conditions
and possessed significantly distinct nematofaunal communities. Runnels featured higher levels of taxonomic and functional
diversity, many unique genera, and the community differed from the assemblage at the limit to the subtidal, stressing their
role as distinct microhabitats. The nematofauna of the structurally complex beach was more diverse than the one from a homogeneous
beach nearby, supporting the hypothesis that structural heterogeneity promotes diversity by compartmentalization and highlighting
the importance of microhabitats in the assessment of biodiversity. Contrary to previous predictions, our results indicate
potentially high regional marine nematode diversity in the Upper Gulf of California. 相似文献

The possibility of using organic solvents (OSs) to increase the susceptibility of bioluminescent microorganisms in a bioassay for assessing the toxicity of chemicals dissolved in water was investigated. To conduct the tests acetonitrile, dimethyl sulfoxide, ethanol, methanol, and isopropanol were used as OSs and Cd, Hg, and Zn as reference toxicants. The addition of OSs modified the toxicity of the three metals to Vibrio harveyi, according on the bioluminescence assay used. The sensitivity of the luminescence bioassay for Hg increased in the presence of the five OSs, thus indicating a greater toxic effect. However, the sensitivity of the assay for the other two metals, Cd and Zn, increased or decreased (lesser toxic effect) depending on the concentration at which the OSs were used. No correlation was observed between the concentration of the five OSs and the toxicity of the three reference toxicants. From this it can be deduced that none of these OSs could be recommended for increasing generically the sensitivity of toxicity biotests using V. harveyi. 相似文献

Sulfide generation should be avoided during wastewater transportation. The efficiency of nitrate dosing for the inhibition of sulfide generation was evaluated during reclaimed wastewater transport with two nitrate doses, 2.5 and 5 mg/L nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N). A calcium nitrate [Ca(NO3)2] solution was injected at the beginning of the 61-km-long gravity pipe, which is part of the Reclaimed Wastewater Reuse System of South Tenerife (Spain). During transportation, after dissolved oxygen depletion, a denitrification process took place. With the 5 mg/L NO3-N dose, nitrate was not completely removed at the end of the pipe, whereas with 2.5 mg/L NO3-N, a complete denitrification was achieved. Sulfide generation was completely inhibited with the 5 mg/L dose. However, with 2.5 mg/L, sulfide generation was not completely inhibited but delayed and minimized to a great extent. Denitrification was stoichiometrically limited by the availability in biodegradable matter. An empirical equation enables one to predict the nitrate concentration. 相似文献

This article provides a case study of small-scale private sector provision of water supply in Paraguay, where the Government has sought sector policy reforms that would encourage private investment in drinking water supply. Ironically, while the Government has focused almost entirely on garnering the interest of large private international water companies, much smaller local firms have already made significant investments in drinking water services for the poor, all without any participation or encouragement from the Government. Outside Paraguay's two major cities, Asunción and Ciudad del Este, large numbers of aguateros currently provide piped potable water to lower-income people. Though the aguateros have little legal footing — they are in many respects informal and unregulated —they have constructed as much as one third of all the new drinking water connections in these two cities over the past 20 years. The small-scale water systems in Paraguay offer a model of financial, economic, and water-use efficiency. This article asserts that an abundance of groundwater resources, cheap access to electricity for pumping, and a spirit of informal investment, among other variables, has spawned widespread use of this approach. This article documents and analyzes the features of these independent small-scale water providers in Paraguay and the efficiency they bring to the use of water resources in meeting drinking water demands among the poor. Land-use and land-cover changes have attracted substantial scientific interest in recent years because of their marked influence
on hydrological cycles. In developed countries of the Mediterranean basin, the generalized revegetation and forest growth
in mountainous areas that occurred during the last five decades are negatively affecting the evolution of water resources
in headwaters. In this study, changes in land cover in the Duero River Basin (northern Spain) during the last 50 years were
analyzed and their role in hydrological evolution was estimated. For this purpose, step-wise linear regressions were developed
to estimate the evolution of runoff as a function of climate (precipitation and temperatures). The results show a significant
expansion of forest cover in the headwaters, although it has been more extensive in the mountains to the north of the basin
than to the south. River discharges in the headwaters underwent a generalized decline during the study period (1961–2006),
but precipitation over the same period did not show an appreciable trend. In the absence of noticeable trends in removal of
water for human consumption, our results indicate that revegetation is contributing to the observed hydrological decline.
Our hypothesis is confirmed because of the greater divergence in the evolution of precipitation and runoff in the northern
headwaters (more forest growth) than in the south headwaters (less forest growth). Results suggest that further increases
in forest area will enhance hydrological decline and highlight the importance of integrating land-cover information in water
availability assessments in a region where water is a strategic resource. 相似文献
