A six-day tunnel field study was conducted in the city of Monterrey, Mexico, during June 2009 to derive on-road emission factors (EFs) for trace gases and fine particulate matter from the local vehicle fleet. The Loma Larga Tunnel (LLT) is a 532-m-long structure that is mainly used by light-duty gasoline-powered vehicles. It is composed of two independent bores that have a semicircular cross section, 17 m in diameter with a 3.5% slope. During the study, a fleet of 108,569 vehicles with average speeds that ranged from 43 to 76 km/hr was sampled. Ambient air samples were taken inside each bore using 6-L SUMMA-polished canisters and low-volume samplers for the quantification of total nonmethane hydrocarbons (TNMHC) and PM2.5, respectively. The effect of road dust resuspension was considered in the computation of PM2.5 EFs. Additional equipment was used to measure real-time levels of CO2 and NOx; CO EFs were estimated using NOx as a surrogate. TNMHC samples and NOx levels were obtained for 2-hr time periods, while PM2.5 samples and CO2 levels were obtained using 2.5-hr time periods, which included the time periods of the TNMHC and NOx measurements. Estimated EFs for TNMHC, CO, NOx, and PM2.5 were 1.16 ± 0.05, 4.83 ± 2.9, and 0.11 ± 0.07 g/km-veh (2-hr average) and 17.5 ± 5.7 mg/veh-km (2.5-hr average), respectively, while CO2 EFs were 182.7 ± 44 g/km-veh for the 2-hr time periods and 170 ± 22 g/veh-km for the 2.5-hr time periods. The average fuel economy estimated from the field data was 12.3 ± 2.3 km/L. The CO2 and TNMHC EFs (on a mass per distance basis) tended to be higher for traffic moving upslope, while the inverse occurred for the PM2.5 EFs. In comparison to other tunnel studies, the CO2 EFs obtained were similar, the NOx and PM2.5 EFs were lower, and the CO and TNMHC EFs were higher.
Implications Mobile source emission factors (EFs) for Mexican cities other than Mexico City are scarce. In Monterrey, Mexico, one of the three major cities in the country, emissions inventories are constructed based on EFs from other locations. However, it is quite relevant to obtain local information to construct reliable inventories. We present what is, to our knowledge, the first tunnel study conducted in a Mexican city other than Mexico City to estimate fleet-average mobile source EFs. This is also the first study that reports PM2.5 EFs derived from a tunnel study in the country.  相似文献

The biological stabilization process of cattle and poultry manure was studied using thermogravimetric analysis and (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance. The stabilization processes carried out were composting, anaerobic digestion and a mixed process (partly aerobic, partly anaerobic). It was observed from the analyzed samples that the biological stabilization processes reduce the volatile content of the bio-wastes and increase the degree of aromaticity. The stabilization of cattle manure by means of aerobic processes was able to further oxidize and enriched in aromatic compounds the bio-waste when compared with the digestion process. On the other hand, the stabilization of poultry manure resulted in a greater aromatization under the digestion process. Stabilized samples with a high degree of aromaticity presented a lower volatile content accompanied by a reduction in the intensity of the differential thermogravimetry peak registered under an inert atmosphere, indicative of the thermal decomposition of the organic matter. The thermal decomposition of all the analyzed materials (fresh and stabilized samples) commenced at around 200 degrees C but for the digested poultry manure, which decomposition initiated close to 250 degrees C. All stabilized samples yielded a lower degree of volatilization to that one observed in fresh samples.  相似文献

There is a critical need to accurately measure the concentrations of natural steroidal estrogens in flushed dairy manure wastewater (FDMW) to assess any potential risk of waterway contamination resulting from land application. Estrogens are a concern because low concentrations (10-100 ng L-1) in water can adversely affect aquatic vertebrate species such as fish, turtles, and frogs by disrupting the normal function of their endocrine systems. The objective of this study was to develop a sample preparation method that permits the quantification of four natural steroidal estrogens (17alpha-estradiol, 17beta-estradiol, estrone, and estriol) in FDMW by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Solid-phase extraction with graphitized carbon black was used for the bulk extraction of estrogens from FDMW and additional sample purification was accomplished with C-18. The sample preparation method allowed estrogens to be detected accurately by GC-MS in FDMW. Spiked recovery experiments indicated that the method is satisfactory for measuring the estrogens of interest in FDMW with average recovery of >90%. As expected in FDMW, characterization of the estrogen profile revealed a large abundance of 17alpha-estradiol relative to 17beta-estradiol and estrone. Estriol was not detected in FDMW. The methodology developed in this research helps provide an analytical foundation for the quantification of steroidal estrogens in FDMW by GC-MS.  相似文献

This paper presents adjusted profile likelihoods for α, the roughness parameter of the distribution. This distribution has been widely used in the modeling, processing and analysis of data corrupted by speckle noise, e.g., synthetic aperture radar images. Specifically, we consider the following modified profile likelihoods: (i) the one proposed by Cox and Reid, and (ii) approximations to adjusted profile likelihood proposed by Barndorff—Nielsen, namely the approximations proposed by Severini and one based on results by Fraser, Reid and Wu. We focus on point estimation and on signalized likelihood ratio tests, the parameter of interest being the roughness parameter that indexes the distribution. As far as point estimation is concerned, the numerical evidence presented in the paper favors the Cox and Reid adjustment, and in what concerns signalized likelihood ratio tests, the results favor the approximation to Barndorff7mdash;Nielsen's adjustment based on the results by Fraser, Reid and Wu. Summary. Earlier studies have demonstrated the allelopathic potential of the exudate of Cistus ladanifer leaves, and have identified the compounds responsible for the effect. It is here shown that the effect of each of these compounds and their interactions on germination and seedling development varies depending on the light and temperature parameters to which they are subjected. The allelochemicals show a fairly heterogeneous response when studied separately, there being no general pattern to the behaviour. When they act conjointly, however, their activity is enhanced by high temperatures, and the greatest phytotoxicity in inhibiting both germination and seedling development is attained with high temperatures and long photoperiods. These results suggest that the environmental factors temperature and photoperiod may alter the allelopathic effect of Cistus ladanifer. Received 5 December 2001; accepted 11 March 2002.  相似文献
