The four largest Swedish lakes, V?nern, V?ttern, Hj?lmaren, and M?laren, were surveyed by means of aerial IR-color photography in the 1970s. Along small slope gradients in all lakes the emergent communities extended to a width of hundreds of meters, while the extent on steeper slopes was a few meters. Because of the fractionate shape, L. M?laren has a very long shoreline, which promotes vegetation growth in the transition zone between land and water. Sheltered conditions are numerous and water lilies and other floating leaved and freely floating plants are abundant. Emergent as well as submerged macrophytes grow vigorously in the northernmost part of the oligotrophic lake V?ttern. In L. V?nern exposed shores pre-dominate, but sheltered bays and archipelagos are overgrown with reeds. In the shallow lake Hj?lmaren monospecific stands of Phragmites australis are dominant. Recurrent surveys of L. M?laren and L. V?nern in the 1990s showed changes that could be connected to the watertable fluctuations, which have been stabilized since the first investigation. Reeds and water lilies expanded in sheltered parts of the lakes, while the distribution of reed stands growing at their deep limit decreased. 相似文献

This paper reviews the evolution of energy use in Denmark since the early 1970s, in order to shed light on the future path of energy use in Denmark, with particular emphasis on the role of energy efficiency. Improvements in end-use energy efficiency reduced primary energy requirements in Denmark by 22% between 1972 and 1988. This change accounts for two-thirds of the decline in the ratio of energy use to gross domestic product that occurred during this time: the rest of the decline was caused by changes in the mix of goods and services produced and consumed by the Danes. Total energy savings achieved between 1972 and 1988 in Denmark ranked among the highest measured in any major OECD country. Overall, most of the energy savings in Denmark were brought about through improvements in technology. Short-term changes in consumer behaviour were significant in reducing energy needs for space heating and transport. An important stimulus for improved efficiency was higher energy prices, led in no small part by significant taxes imposed on small consumers of heating oil, electricity and motor fuels. 相似文献

Twenty alien species have become established in the lakes M?laren, V?nern, V?ttern and Hj?lmaren. Intentional introductions include fish and the signal crayfish from North America, ornamental plants, and the Canada goose. Unintentional introductions include the crayfish plague introduced with infected crayfish, the zebra mussel, and Chinese mitten crab introduced with ballast water. The introduction of pathogens and parasites, in particular the crayfish plague, to the lakes has had the greatest environmental and socioeconomic effects and has contributed to the decimation of the indigenous noble crayfish. The stocking of brown trout and salmon with origins from different biogeographical regions has contributed to the extinction of relict indigenous fish species in L. V?nern. Although major ecosystem damage caused by the introduction of alien species, with the exception of the crayfish plague, has not occurred in the four large Swedish lakes, local problems of considerable dignity occur occasionally. 相似文献

Amberlite XAD-2 porous polymer was evaluated for the solid sampling of PCBs, PCNs, tri-, tetra-and pentachlorophenol in workroom air. To be able to survive, marine macroalgae in shallow coastal waters need mechanisms for short-term acclimation to fast changes in their environment. Of major importance are mechanisms that regulate the efficiency of photosynthesis by protecting PS II from photo-oxidative damage. Carotenoids, xanthophyll cycles and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) are central constituents of such protection mechanisms. Red algae as a group do not have a universal carotenoid composition. We screened ten red algal species and selected two species, originating from similar ecological conditions but with different carotenoid compositions, for use in irradiance-acclimation experiments. We selected the tropical intertidal species Gracilaria domingensis and Kappaphycus alvarezii with antheraxanthin and lutein as major xanthophylls, respectively. Simultaneous in vivo fluorescence and O2 evolution experiments were performed at different irradiance levels, which allowed a direct comparison of overall photosynthetic performance with NPQ. Interconversions of xanthophylls (violaxanthin, zeaxanthin, β-cryptoxanthin and one unidentified carotenoid) did occur in G. domingensis, but not in response to sudden exposure to light. Thus, NPQ was not correlated with any xanthophyll cycle during short-term acclimation to light. G. domingensis had five times higher weight-specific photosynthetic rates than K. alvarezii, which can be explained by the thicker thallus of K. alvarezii. Chlorophyll-specific gross photosynthetic rates were higher in K. alvarezii, but net rates were the same for both species. G. domingensis showed an immediate strong onset of NPQ upon exposure to irradiance, followed by downregulation to the NPQ level required. In K. alvarezii NPQ increased slowly until the required NPQ level was reached. At high irradiance G. domingensis downregulated photosynthesis while K. alvarezii continued to produce O2 even at 2,000 μmol photons m−2 s−1 without NPQ increase. The strategy of K. alvarezii may provide short-term gains but with the risk of oxidative damage. The fast onset of NPQ in G. domingensis even at subsaturating irradiance as well as downregulation of photosynthesis when NPQ is saturated might provide this species with a competitive advantage under conditions of changing irradiance in the field. 相似文献

The increasing need for biomass for energy and feedstocks, along with the need to divert organic methane generating wastes from landfills, may provide the economic leverage necessary to return this type of marginal land to functional and economic use and is strongly supported by policy at the European Union (EU) level. The use of land to produce biomass for energy production or feedstocks for manufacturing processes (such as plastics and biofuels) has, however, become increasingly contentious, with a number of environmental, economic, and social concerns raised. The REJUVENATE project has developed a decision support framework to help land managers and other decision makers identify potential concerns related to sustainability and what types of biomass reuse for marginal land might be possible, given their particular circumstances. The decision‐making framework takes a holistic approach to decision making rather than viewing biomass production simply as an adjunct of a planned phytoremediation project. The framework is serviceable in Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. These countries have substantive differences in their land and biomass reuse circumstances. However, all can make use of the set of common principles of crop, site, value, and project risk management set out by REJUVENATE. Sulfur recirculation is a new technology for reducing boiler corrosion and dioxin formation. It was demonstrated in full-scale tests at a Waste to Energy plant in Göteborg (Sweden) during nearly two months of operation. Sulfur was recirculated as sulfuric acid from the flue gas cleaning back to the boiler, thus creating a sulfur loop.The new technology was evaluated by extensive measurement campaigns during operation under normal conditions (reference case) and operation with sulfur recirculation. The chlorine content of both fly ash and boiler ash decreased and the sulfur content increased during the sulfur recirculation tests. The deposit growth and the particle concentration decreased with sulfur recirculation and the dioxin concentration (I-TEQ) of the flue gas was reduced by approximately 25%. Sulfuric acid dew point measurements showed that the sulfuric acid dosage did not lead to elevated SO3 concentrations, which may otherwise induce low temperature corrosion.In the sulfur recirculation corrosion probe exposures, the corrosion rate decreased for all tested materials (16Mo3, Sanicro 28 and Inconel 625) and material temperatures (450 °C and 525 °C) compared to the reference exposure. The corrosion rates were reduced by 60–90%. Sulfur recirculation prevented the formation of transition metal chlorides at the metal/oxide interface, formation of chromate and reduced the presence of zinc in the corrosion products. Furthermore, measured corrosion rates at 525 °C with sulfur recirculation in operation were similar or lower compared to those measured at 450 °C material temperature in reference conditions, which corresponds to normal operation at normal steam temperatures. Summary. To better understand the biological role of floral scents for
butterflies, electrophysiological responses to floral scents were
investigated using combined gas chromatography and electroantennographic
detection (GC-EAD). The antennal responses of three butterfly species,
Aglais urticae L. (Nymphalidae), Inachis io L. (Nymphalidae), and
Gonepteryx rhamni L. (Pieridae) to floral scent compounds from both
natural and synthetic mixtures were examined. Floral scents were
collected from the butterfly nectar plants Cirsium arvense (L.)
(Asteraceae), and Buddleja davidii Franchet cv. (Loganicaeae) with
dynamic head-space methods on Tenax-GR and eluted with pentane. These
eluates, composed of natural floral scent blends, represent an array of
compounds in their natural state. In the GC-EAD analyses eleven
compounds were identified from C. arvense with the benzenoid compound
phenylacetaldehyde in highest abundance. Seventeen compounds were
identified from B. davidii with the irregular terpene oxoisophorone in
highest abundance. Thirty-nine synthetic floral scent compounds were
mixed in pentane, in equal amounts; about 35 ng were allowed to reach
the antennae. The butterflies showed antennal responses to most of the
floral scent compounds from both natural and synthetic blends except to
the highly volatile monoterpene alkenes. Certain benzenoid compounds
such as phenylacetaldehyde, monoterpenes such as linalool, and irregular
terpenes such as oxoisophorone, were emitted in relatively large amounts
from C. arvense and B. davidii, and elicited the strongest antennal
responses. These compounds also elicited strong antennal responses when
present in the synthetic scent blends. Thus, the butterflies seem to
have many and /or sensitive antennal receptors for these compounds,
which points to their biological importance. Moreover, these compounds
are exclusively of floral scent origin. For B. davidii, which depends
highly on butterflies for pollination, the exclusive floral scent
compounds emitted in high abundance could be the result of an adaptive
pressure to attract butterflies.
