This research examines the willingness of employees to follow their organization when the entire business unit is geographically relocating. The site for the study was a large government defense agency moving from a major U.S. northeastern metropolitan area to a rural area south of Washington, D.C. The study participants were 380 employees who were deciding within the next 6 months if they would relocate, too. Attachment to the present community, attachment to the current organization, and availability of job market alternatives are the factors most significantly associated with willingness to move during corporate relocation. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

There is extensive research on employee attitudes regarding employers and unions, but these studies have underemphasized social and affective forces. Most studies also examine attitudes toward either the union or the employer without considering how these attitudes might relate to one another. The present study of faculty (N = 306) at a large public research university demonstrated that perceptions of union support were positively related to union participation and perceptions of administration support were negatively related to union participation. Subjective norms and general union attitudes were related to perceptions of union support, and subjective norms were related to perceived organizational support. Taken together, an individual's participation in a union recognition effort depends not only on union instrumentality, but also upon social relationships with the union and administration. This research examines demographic diversity between mentors and proteges on international internships. Using a sample of 138 interns on six‐month overseas assignments, the results indicate that interns who are different in nationality and gender from their mentors are much less likely to receive task‐related, social‐related, and career‐related support from them. Moreover, this deficit in mentoring is associated with poorer socialization to internship assignments, lower levels of learning about international business, lower likelihoods of receiving and accepting job offers from internship employers, and lower perceived career instrumentality of the internships. The successful operation of any type of hydrogen-producing bioreactor depends on the performance of the microorganisms present in the system. Both substrate and partial gas pressures are crucial factors affecting dark fermentation metabolic pathways. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of both factors on hydrogen production using anaerobic granular sludge as inoculum and, secondly, to study the metabolic shifts of an anaerobic community subjected to low partial gas pressures. With this goal in mind, seven different wastewater (four synthetic media, two industrial wastewater, and one domestic effluent) and the effect of applying vacuum on the systems were analyzed. The application of vacuum promoted an increase in the diversity of hydrogenproducing bacteria, such as Clostridium, and promoted the dominance of acetoclastic- over hydrogenotrophic methanogens. The application of different media promoted a wide variety of metabolic pathways. Nevertheless, reduction of the hydrogen partial pressure by application of vacuum lead to further oxidation of reaction intermediates irrespective of the medium used, which resulted in higher hydrogen and methane production, and improved the COD removal. Interestingly, vacuum greatly promoted biogenic hydrogen production from a real wastewater, which opens possibilities for future application of dark fermentation systems to enhance biohydrogen yields. 相似文献

Disaster recovery operations that do not account for environmental sustainability (ES) risk exacerbating the impact of the disaster and hindering long‐term recovery efforts. Yet aid agencies do not always consider ES. This research is a case study of the recovery that followed the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Using timber and concrete procurement as proxies for broader post‐disaster operations, research examined perceptions of ES as well as attempts at and barriers to incorporating it into programming. Identified barriers can be grouped into two categories: (1) prioritisations and perceptions within the disaster response sector that resulted in limited enthusiasm for incorporating ES into programming, and (2) structural and organisational barriers within the disaster response framework that impeded ES attempts and served as a further disincentive to incorporating ES into programming. As a result of those barriers, incorporation of ES was sporadic and inconsistent and often depended on the capacity and motivation of specific implementers. 相似文献

The establishment of protected corridors linking the breeding and foraging grounds of many migratory species remains deficient, particularly in the world’s oceans. For example, Australia has recently established a network of Commonwealth Marine Reserves, supplementing existing State reserves, to protect a wide range of resident and migratory marine species; however, the routes used by mobile species to access these sites are often unknown. The flatback marine turtle (Natator depressus) is endemic to the continental shelf of Australia, yet information is not available about how this species uses the marine area. We used a geospatial approach to delineate a coastal corridor from 73 adult female flatback postnesting migratory tracks from four rookeries along the north-west coast of Australia. A core corridor of 1,150 km length and 30,800 km2 area was defined, of which 52 % fell within 11 reserves, leaving 48 % (of equivalent size to several Commonwealth Reserves) of the corridor outside of the reserve network. Despite limited data being available for other marine wildlife in this region, humpback whale migratory tracks overlapped with 96 % of the core corridor, while the tracks of three other species overlapped by 5–10 % (blue whales, olive ridley turtles, whale sharks). The overlap in the distribution ranges of at least 20 other marine vertebrates (dugong, cetaceans, marine turtles, sea snakes, crocodiles, sharks) with the corridor also imply potential use. In conclusion, this study provides valuable information towards proposing new locations requiring protection, as well as identifying high-priority network linkages between existing marine protected areas. 相似文献

Efficient and robust transportation networks are key to the effectiveness of many natural systems. In polydomous ant colonies, which consist of two or more spatially separated but socially connected nests, resources must be transported between nests. In this study, we analyse the network structure of the inter-nest trails formed by natural polydomous ant colonies. In contrast to previous laboratory studies, the natural colonies in our study do not form minimum spanning tree networks. Instead the networks contain extra connections, suggesting that in natural colonies, robustness may be an important factor in network construction. Spatial analysis shows that nests are randomly distributed within the colony boundary and we find nests are most likely to connect to their nearest neighbours. However, the network structure is not entirely determined by spatial associations. By showing that the networks do not minimise total trail length and are not determined only by spatial associations, the results suggest that the inter-nest networks produced by ant colonies are influenced by previously unconsidered factors. We show that the transportation networks of polydomous ant colonies balance trail costs with the construction of networks that enable efficient transportation of resources. These networks therefore provide excellent examples of effective biological transport networks which may provide insight into the design and management of transportation systems. 相似文献

We present a new experimental set-up enabling fine-scale examination of how changing environmental conditions affect the below-ground biogeochemical microenvironment of aquatic macrophytes. By means of microsensor and planar optode technology, the influence of plant-mediated radial O2 release on the below-ground chemical microenvironment of Zostera muelleri and Halophila ovalis was determined in high spatio-temporal resolution. The seagrass specimens were cultured in a new split flow chamber with artificial sediment made of a deoxygenated seawater–agar solution with added sulphide. Microelectrode measurements revealed radial O2 release from the root–shoot junction of both Z. muelleri and H. ovalis during both light stimulation and darkness, resulting in a rapid decrease in H2S concentration, and a significant drop in pH was observed within the plant-derived oxic microzone of Z. muelleri. No radial O2 release was detectable from the below-ground tissue of Z. muelleri during conditions of combined water-column hypoxia and darkness, leaving the plants more susceptible to sulphide invasion. The spatial O2 heterogeneity within the immediate rhizosphere of Z. muelleri was furthermore determined in two dimensions by means of planar optodes. O2 images revealed a decrease in the spatial extent of the plant-derived oxic microzone surrounding the below-ground tissue during darkness, supporting the microelectrode measurements. This new experimental approach can be applied to all rooted aquatic plants, as it allows for direct visual assessment of the below-ground tissue surface during microprofiling, while enabling modification of the above-ground environmental conditions. 相似文献

We highlight the social aspects of team creativity by proposing that team creativity is influenced by two types of team social capital: bridging and bonding social capital. Going beyond the structural perspective, we posit that team‐level human capital diversity is one of the potential antecedents of social capital for team creativity. We suggest that network structures are formed by teammates' interactions, which are largely the result of differences in their individual characteristics. The results of an empirical study using 36 teams of MBA students showed that the interaction of team‐bridging social capital with team‐bonding social capital was positively and significantly related to team creativity. Knowledge variety and knowledge disparity had a joint effect on team‐bridging social capital, and knowledge separation was negatively related to team‐bonding social capital. Moreover, team social capital mediated the effects of knowledge diversity on team creativity.
