As a result of the current decline of oil prices, exploration decisions are more carefully analysed than ever before. At the same time various governments have introduced incentives to reinvest in exploration and development in order to maintain or increase activity. As a result, most exploration decisions are now being analysed as "incremental investments". This has the effect of "trapping" investments in areas where profits are currently being made. This in turn creates serious problems for those developing countries which would like to attract exploration. The paper analyses issues related to sliding scale formulae based on the ROR, and the economic impact of the size of the area to which fiscal terms apply. 相似文献

The prospect of using wastewater containing high loads of soluble organic matter (OM) for removing residual agricultural chemicals (fertilizer, pesticide, or herbicide) in farm soil, although promising, could have adverse effects on soil agricultural quality as a result of development of redoximorphic features in the soil profile. In this study, the effect of organic carbon supplement for bioremediation of residual fertilizer nitrate on soil properties, redox potential (Eh), pH, and metal ion mobilization was studied using sandy soils packed in columns. The study was included in a general project, described elsewhere (Ugwuegbu et al., 2000), undertaken to evaluate use of controlled water table management (WTM) systems to supply organic carbon for creating a reduced environment conducive to denitrification of residual fertilizer nitrate leaching from the farm to subsurface water. The columns were subjected to subirrigation with water containing soluble organic carbon in the form of glucose. The work was carried out in two experimental setups and the long-term effect of a range of glucose concentrations on the Eh, pH, and soluble levels of Fe and Mn was investigated. From the results obtained, it could be concluded that excessive organic carbon supplement to soil can have adverse effects on soil quality and that Eh and soluble Fe are the two most practical parameters for monitoring soil health during treatment of farm chemicals. 相似文献

The capacity of riparian zones to serve as critical control locations for watershed nitrogen flux varies with site characteristics. Without a means to stratify riparian zones into different levels of ground water nitrate removal capacity, this variability will confound spatially explicit source-sink models of watershed nitrate flux and limit efforts to target riparian restoration and management. We examined the capability of SSURGO (1:15 840 Soil Survey Geographic database) map classifications (slope class, geomorphology, and/or hydric soil designation) to identify riparian sites with high capacity for ground water nitrate removal. The study focused on 100 randomly selected riparian locations in a variety of forested and glaciated settings within Rhode Island. Geomorphic settings included till, outwash, and organic/alluvial deposits. We defined riparian zones with "high ground water nitrate removal capacity" as field sites possessing both >10 m of hydric soil width and an absence of ground water surface seeps. SSURGO classification based on a combination of geomorphology and hydric soil status created two functionally distinct sets of riparian sites. More than 75% of riparian sites classified by SSURGO as organic/alluviumhydric or as outwash-hydric had field attributes that suggest a high capacity for ground water nitrate removal. In contrast, >85% of all till sites and nonhydric outwash sites had field characteristics that minimize the capacity for ground water nitrate removal. Comparing the STATSGO and SSURGO databases for a 64000-ha watershed, STATSGO grossly under-represented critical riparian features. The Fate of Priority Areas for Conservation in Protected Areas: A Fine-Scale Markov Chain Approach 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Park managers in alpine areas must deal with the increase in forest coverage that has been observed in most European mountain
areas, where traditional farming and agricultural practices have been abandoned. The aim of this study is to develop a fine-scale
model of a broad area to support the managers of Paneveggio Nature Park (Italy) in conservation planning by focusing on the
fate of priority areas for conservation in the next 50–100 years. GIS analyses were performed to assess the afforestation
dynamic over time using two historical maps (from 1859 and 1936) and a series of aerial photographs and ortho-photos (taken
from 1954 to 2006) covering a time span of 150 years. The results show an increase in the forest surface area of about 35%.
Additionally, the forest became progressively more compact and less fragmented, with a consequent loss of ecotones and open
habitats that are important for biodiversity. Markov chain-cellular automata models were used to project future changes, evaluating
the effects on a habitat scale. Simulations show that some habitats defined as priority by the EU Habitat Directive will be
compromised by the forest expansion by 2050 and suffer a consistent loss by 2100. This protocol, applied to other areas, can
be used for designing long-term management measures with a focus on habitats where conservation status is at risk. 相似文献

The Canadian Standards Association's (CSA) Z751-94 environmental auditing document is compared with the definition of an environmental audit in the European Union's eco-management and audit scheme Regulation. The new CSA document Guidelines for Environmental Auditing: Statement of Principles and General Practices is judged to have major short-comings with regard to its practical value for both environmental auditing practitioners and environmentalists. These shortcomings suggest that the guideline is unlikely to be widely used by the small but growing Canadian environmental auditing profession. ABSTRACT: Detailed measurements of soil moisture and ET in semiarid forest environments have not been widely reported in the literature. In this study, soil moisture and water balance components were measured over a four‐year period on a semiarid ponderosa pine hillslope, with evapotranspiration (ET) determined as the residual of measured precipitation, runoff, and change in soil moisture storage. ET accounts for approximately 95 percent of the water budget and has a distinctly bimodal annual pattern, with peaks occurring after spring snowmelt and during the late summer monsoon season, periods that coincide with high soil moisture. Weekly growing season ET rates determined by the hillslope water balance are found to be invariably below calculated potential rates. Normalized ET rates are linearly correlated (r2= 0.62) with soil moisture; therefore, a simple linear relation is proposed. Growing season soil moisture dynamics were modeled based on this relation. Results are in fair agreement (r2= 0.63) with the observed soil moisture data over the four growing seasons; however, for two dry summers with little surface runoff, much better results (r2 > 0.90) were obtained. 相似文献

Although the importance of understanding stakeholder beliefs regarding environmental policy has been noted by many authors,
research focusing on the heterogeneity of stakeholder views is still very scarce and concentrated on a product-oriented definition
of stakeholders. The aim of the present study is to address this gap by examining environmental policy beliefs of stakeholder
groups engaged in protected area management. Questionnaires containing 73 five-point Likert scale items were administered
to eight different stakeholder groups involved in the management of Greek protected areas. Items referred to core beliefs
on environmental policy, namely, the value framework and sustainable development, and secondary beliefs, that is, beliefs
on social consensus and ecotourism development. Our study used as a starting point respondent recruitment on the basis of
a traditional product-centered approach. We investigated whether environmental policy beliefs can be used to effectively segregate
stakeholders in well-defined segments, which override the product-oriented definition of stakeholders. Indeed, K-means clustering
revealed an innovation-introduction and an implementation-charged sample segment. The instrument utilized in this research
proved quite reliable and valid in measuring stakeholder environmental policy beliefs. Furthermore, the methodology implied
that stakeholder groups differ in a significant number of belief-system elements. On the other hand, stakeholder groups were
effectively distinguished on a small set of both core and secondary beliefs. Therefore, the instrument used can be an effective
tool for determining and monitoring environmental policy beliefs of stakeholders in protected area management. This is of
considerable importance in the Greek case, given the recent establishment of 27 administrative bodies of protected areas,
all of which are required to incorporate public consultation into management practices. 相似文献

This article describes the history of the Coachella Valley Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan (CVMSHCP), in the Riverside
County region of Southern California. When this collaborative biodiversity conservation planning process began, in 1994, local
participants and supporters had numerous factors working in their favor. Yet, as of April 2007, nearly 13 years had passed
without an approved plan. This is a common problem. Many multiple species habitat conservation plans now take more than a
decade to complete, and the long duration of these processes often results in negative consequences. The CVMSHCP process became
bogged down—despite strong scientific input and many political advantages—due to problematic relationships between the Plan’s
local supporters, its municipal signatory parties, and officials from the state and federal wildlife agencies, particularly
the regional office of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. This case study demonstrates the crucial importance of institutional
structures and relationships, process management, and timeliness in habitat conservation planning. We conclude by offering
several related recommendations for future HCP processes. 相似文献

River damming provides a dominant human impact on river environments worldwide, and while local impacts of reservoir flooding
are immediate, subsequent ecological impacts downstream can be extensive. In this article, we assess seven research strategies
for analyzing the impacts of dams and river flow regulation on riparian ecosystems. These include spatial comparisons of (1)
upstream versus downstream reaches, (2) progressive downstream patterns, or (3) the dammed river versus an adjacent free-flowing
or differently regulated river(s). Temporal comparisons consider (4) pre- versus post-dam, or (5) sequential post-dam conditions.
However, spatial comparisons are complicated by the fact that dams are not randomly located, and temporal comparisons are
commonly limited by sparse historic information. As a result, comparative approaches are often correlative and vulnerable
to confounding factors. To complement these analyses, (6) flow or sediment modifications can be implemented to test causal
associations. Finally, (7) process-based modeling represents a predictive approach incorporating hydrogeomorphic processes
and their biological consequences. In a case study of Hells Canyon, the upstream versus downstream comparison is confounded
by a dramatic geomorphic transition. Comparison of the multiple reaches below the dams should be useful, and the comparison
of Snake River with the adjacent free-flowing Salmon River may provide the strongest spatial comparison. A pre- versus post-dam
comparison would provide the most direct study approach, but pre-dam information is limited to historic reports and archival
photographs. We conclude that multiple study approaches are essential to provide confident interpretations of ecological impacts
downstream from dams, and propose a comprehensive study for Hells Canyon that integrates multiple research strategies. 相似文献
