Degraded land that is historically contaminated from different sources of industrial waste provides an opportunity for conversion to bioenergy fuel production and also to increase sequestration of carbon in soil through organic amendments. In pot experiments, As mobility was investigated in three different brownfield soils amended with green waste compost (GWC, 30% v/v) or biochar (BC, 20% v/v), planted with Miscanthus. Using GWC improved crop yield but had little effect on foliar As uptake, although the proportion of As transferred from roots to foliage differed considerably between the three soils. It also increased dissolved carbon concentrations in soil pore water that influenced Fe and As mobility. Effects of BC were less pronounced, but the impacts of both amendments on SOC, Fe, P and pH are likely to be critical in the context of As leaching to ground water. Growing Miscanthus had no measurable effect on As mobility.  相似文献

. Extrapair paternity has been the focus of numerous studies of socially monogamous birds, but the dynamics of extrapair male-female interactions have been explored in relatively few. In western bluebirds (Sialia mexicana), a species with 20% extrapair paternity, two to four observers monitored extrapair copulations (EPCs) occurring on the female's home territory while her social mate was detained in a cage near the nest. Detention elevated the frequency and visibility of EPCs, so we could score receptivity of females to identifiable extrapair males without the interference of intermale aggression. Most intruding extrapair males were neighboring breeders visiting outside their own mate's fertile period. Local male relatives of the detained male attempted nonincestuous EPCs, but neighboring sons did not attempt to copulate with their mothers and, in some cases, chased away intruders. Female receptivity was not influenced by whether the detained mate was visually present or hidden behind cloth and did not increase with the persistence or relative size of the extrapair male. Female receptivity increased with the age difference between the extrapair male and the female's social mate, suggesting that females prefer older males as extrapair partners. This study suggests that costs of resistance are relatively unimportant in determining female receptivity in western bluebirds, but identifies preferential receptivity to older males as a potential factor in the outcome of inter- and intrasexual conflict over paternity.  相似文献

Summary Males and females of the milkweed leaf beetle mate for up to 2.5 d in the field; copulation is interspersed with mounted courtship behavior and periods of passive riding on the female's back. In 1985, females mated with up to 10 different males in Bridgeport, New York, and matings averaged 0.75±0.04 (SE) d in duration. Sperm utilization patterns are complex in the milkweed leaf beetle. In the laboratory, mating duration, mating order and the duration of the gap between matings affected paternity. The second male's sperm predominated when a female's two consecutive matings were of equal duration (but were long: 45 h each) or when they were intermediate in duration (15 h each) with a 5 day gap between the two matings. The mechanism of sperm predominance appears to be one of time-dependent sperm removal and replacement. Neither relative nor absolute size of males affected the extent to which they superceded the sperm of rivals. Electrophoretic analysis of paternity at 6 polymorphic loci showed that offspring of at least eight out of 11 mating pairs pairs collected in the field at the end of the 1984 breeding season were sired by more than one male. At least seven of the 11 families produced some offspring that were sired by the female's most recent mate in the field and in no case was the collected male completely excluded from paternity. In a greenhouse plot, males climbed off females' backs a mean of 1.1±0.3 h before oviposition. Females did not oviposit with males on their backs and did not oviposit sooner when males were removed than when males were allowed to remain mounted, indicating that males don't keep females from ovipositing until they can achieve sperm predominance. The close concordance between male disembarkment and oviposition suggests that males remain with females beyond the time when they have superceded the sperm of their prior mates, possibly to guard them from rival males. Although the prolonged mating association of the milkweed leaf beetle cannot be separated into discrete copulatory and guarding phases, the results of this study suggest that prolonged mating enables males both to remove and replace the sperm of the females' prior mates with their own sperm and to prevent females from remating prior to oviposition.  相似文献

Application of greenwaste compost to brownfield land is increasingly common in soil and landscape restoration. Previous studies have demonstrated both beneficial and detrimental effects of this material on trace element mobility. A pot experiment with homogenised soil/compost investigated distribution and mobility of trace elements, two years after application of greenwaste compost mulch to shallow soils overlying a former alkali-works contaminated with Pb, Cu and As (∼900, 200 and 500 mg kg−1, respectively). Compost mulch increased organic carbon and Fe in soil pore water, which in turn increased As and Sb mobilization; this enhanced uptake by lettuce and sunflower. A very small proportion of the total soil trace element pool was in readily-exchangeable form (<0.01% As, <0.001% other trace elements), but the effect of compost on behaviour of metals was variable and ambiguous. It is concluded that greenwaste compost should be applied with caution to multi-element contaminated soils.  相似文献
