ABSTRACT: A mathematical solution based on porous media flow is developed for solute travel time to a well as affected by a leak around the upper part of the casing. Consider a well of radius 0.2 meters (m) penetrating, fully, a semiconfined aquifer of thickness 6 m with impermeable casing length of 4.5 m, and screened casing length 1.5 m. Around the upper 1.5 m of the impermeable casing length, there is a highly permeable region (a leak). The radius of influence of the well is 10 m. The porous flow medium has a hydraulic conductivity of 10 m/day and a porosity of 0.25. Between the water table and the water level in the well, there is a steady state pumped down head difference of 0.3 m. Solute travel time from a point at the bottom of the leak to the well is 2.33 days. If the leak is sealed (grouted), the travel time is 6.24 days. Examples of six different geometries are given. Laboratory studies verify the theory. The computations should be useful in the design and protection of water wells from solutes, such as from agriculture, industry, strip mines, or sanitary landfills. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Stream channel stability is affected by peak flows rather than average annual water yield. Timber harvesting and other land management activities that contribute to soil compaction, vegetation removal, or increased drainage density can increase peak discharges and decrease the recurrence interval of bankfull discharges. Increased peak discharges can cause more frequent movement of large streambed materials, leading to more rapid stream channel change or instability. This study proposes a relationship between increased discharge and channel stability, and presents a methodology that can be used to evaluate stream channel stability thresholds on a stream reach basis. Detailed surveys of the channel cross section, water surface slope, streambed particle size distribution, and field identification of bankfull stage are used to estimate existing bankfull flow conditions. These site specific stream channel characteristics are used in bed load movement formulae to predict critical flow conditions for entrainment of coarse bed material (D84 size fraction). The “relative bed stability” index, defined as the ratio of critical flow condition to the existing condition at bankfull discharge, can predict whether increased peak discharges will exceed stream channel thresholds. 相似文献

In this paper, we focus on the issues related to development densities that emerged from our study of sprawl and development issues in three regions of British Columbia, Canada. We chose to focus on this aspect of the Smart Growth agenda because, while many of its other elements enjoy wide support across social interests, the goal of achieving a higher density urban fabric is highly controversial. We proceeded by collecting data on development densities and 13 indicators of community sustainability in 26 municipalities. The results suggest that the density of communities is associated with efficiencies in infrastructure and with reduced automobile dependence, with the ecological and economic implications which flow from that. However, it does not necessarily correlate with greater affordability of housing or more access to green space. In fact, if anything, we discovered a negative relationship between housing affordability and green space per capita and higher land-use densities. In a second stage of the research, we conducted a qualitative analysis of a subset of six municipalities and identified key policy issues for moving ahead with the Smart Growth agenda. The paper concludes with a discussion of the policy issues that emerged from these case studies. 相似文献

Long-term effects of lead poisoning on bone mineralization in vultures exposed to ammunition sources

Long-lived species are particularly susceptible to bioaccumulation of lead in bone tissues. In this paper we gain insights into the sublethal effects of lead contamination on Egyptian vultures (Neophron percnopterus). Our approach was done on the comparison of two populations (Canary Islands and Iberian Peninsula) differing in exposures to the ingestion of lead ammunition. Blood lead levels were higher in the island population (Canary Islands range: 5.10-1780 μg L−1n = 137; Iberian Peninsula range: 5.60-217.30 μg L−1n = 32) showing clear seasonal trends, peaking during the hunting season. Moreover, males were more susceptible to lead accumulation than females. Bone lead concentration increased with age, reflecting a bioaccumulation effect. The bone composition was significatively altered by this contaminant: the mineralization degree decreased as lead concentration levels increased. These results demonstrate the existence of long-term effects of lead poisoning, which may be of importance in the declines of threatened populations of long-lived species exposed to this contaminant. 相似文献

Abstract: Hydrologic monitoring in a small forested and mountainous headwater basin in Niigata Prefecture has been undertaken since 2000. An important characteristic of the basin is that the hydrologic regime contains pluvial elements year‐round, including rain‐on‐snow, in addition to spring snowmelt. We evaluated the effect of different snow cover conditions on the hydrologic regime by analyzing observed data in conjunction with model simulations of the snowpack. A degree‐day snow model is presented and applied to the study basin to enable estimation of the basin average snow water equivalent using air temperature at three representative elevations. Analysis of hydrological time series data and master recession curves showed that flow during the snowmelt season was generated by a combination of ground water flow having a recession constant of 0.018/day and diurnal melt water flow having a recession constant of 0.015/hour. Daily flows during the winter/snowmelt season showed greater persistence than daily flows during the warm season. The seasonal water balance indicated that the ratio of runoff to precipitation during the cold season (December to May) was about 90% every year. Seasonal snowpack plays an important role in defining the hydrologic regime, with winter precipitation and snowmelt runoff contributing about 65% of the annual runoff. The timing of the snowmelt season, indicated by the date of occurrence of the first significant snowmelt event, was correlated with the occurrence of low flow events. Model simulations showed that basin average snow water equivalent reached a peak around mid‐February to mid‐March, although further validation of the model is required at high elevation sites. 相似文献

Whole effluent toxicity (WET) tests, with Daphnia magna and Selenastrum capricornutum, were introduced to evaluate the biological toxicities of effluents from the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Korea.
In WET tests of WWTPs effluents, 33.3% (33/99) for D. magna and 92.6% (75/81) for S. capricornutum revealed greater than 1 toxic unit (TU), even though all the treatment plants investigated were operating in compliance with
the regulations, as assessed using conventional monitoring methods (i.e., BOD and total concentration of N or P, etc). There
were only minor differences in toxicities according to the types of influents (municipal and agro-industrial) in all treatment
plants. However, the effluents treated by an activated sludge treatment process were found to exhibit significantly lower
toxicity than those treated by rotating biological contactor (RBC) and extended aeration processes. The seasonal variations
in the toxicity were lower in the summer compared to winter, which may have been due to the rainfall received to the sewage
intake system during the former period. The impact of WET on river water was also investigated based on the discharge volume.
At sites A and B, the total impact of toxicity to stream and river waters was observed to be 70.9% and 90.4% for D. magna and S. capricornutum, respectively. The other four small treatment plants (sites F, G, H and I), with relative discharging volumes between 0.001
and 0.002, contribute less than 1% to the total toxicity. 相似文献

It is useful to have available a variety of catchment-scale water quality models that range in complexity, spatial resolution and data requirements. In a previous paper [Warren, C., Mackay, D., Whelan, M., Fox, K., 2005. Mass balance modelling of contaminants in river basins: a flexible matrix approach. Chemosphere 61, 1458-1467] a series of simple to intermediately complex mass balance models was presented which can be used for tiered exposure assessments in river basins. The connectivity of the segments is expressed using a matrix that permits flexibility in application, enabling the model to be re-segmented and applied to different catchments as required. In this paper, the intermediate models, QWASI matrix-rate constant (QMX-R) and QWASI matrix-fugacity (QMX-F) are used to estimate concentrations of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) in the rivers Aire and Calder, UK, and of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) in the Fraser River basin, Canada. The results compare satisfactorily with monitoring data, suggesting that these QWASI-based models for exposure and risk assessment may be applicable under data-limited conditions. The use of QWASI-based models for regulatory purposes in an evaluative river system is also discussed with reference to assessments of para-dichlorobenzene (pDCB), trichloroethylene (TCE), bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and toluene. It is shown that multi-media QWASI model predictions can be usefully depicted graphically on chemical space diagrams and used to highlight regions in which advection, partitioning to sediments and volatilization may be important determinants of chemical fate in river systems. 相似文献

Many water-related problems are shared by most of the developing countries and the industrialized nations could be in position of offering aid in such problems. Water scarcity and access to safe water, water pollution, severe storms and floods, droughts, waterborne diseases and landslides and mud floods are the most commonly shared problems among developing nations. These problems were discussed in a workshop organized as part of the Fifth International Symposium on Environmental Hydraulics in 2008. The discussion included identification of actors both in the developing and developed nations (vgr. local and national governments, NGOs, universities, foundations and private and public research institutions), aid modalities such as education, technology transfer, technology development and direct investment as well as restrictions and barriers in the form of political and legal issues, economic limitations, cultural differences and geographic distances. ABSTRACT: Models developed in Ohio to predict water quality conditions resulting from various land uses associated with the surface mining of coal are employed to ascertain their transferability to Maryland conditions. Discriminant analysis is employed to assess patterns of association between water quality and land use variables, and predictive models were then constructed with which to quantify changes in stream quality to be expected from the changing mosaic of upstream land uses in the Georges Greek basin of western Maryland. Data collected under procedures specified by the regulatory authority in Maryland may have accounted for the lack of statistically significant results from these models. The effect of long-term exposure to high frequency electromagnetic field (HF EMF) on some somatic and neural characteristics
was studied in neurodefective Lurcher mutant (+/Lc) and normal wild type mice (+/+). Both newborn and young adult (3 months)
animals derived from two strains (C3H, B6CBA) were exposed to HF EMF (870 MHz) from 1st to 21st day or from 91st to 120th
day respectively. In animals of both groups and controls we observed the development of body weight. Moreover, in the HF EMF
exposed adult B6CBA animals we studied spatial learning ability, motor functions and the CNS excitability. To investigate
specific energy absorption rate (SAR) in experimental animals we have done the basic 3D calculations of the electromagnetic
energy distribution in the simplified model of the mouse. The HF EMF exposed animals exhibited mild differences of body weight
between them and unexposed controls. The long-term exposure to HF EMF did not significantly influence the ability to learn
in the Morris water maze. However, significant lower swimming speed was found in the irradiated +/Lc as well as lower motor
activity of +/+ in the open field when compared to controls. No significant differences were found between HF EMF irradiated
animals and controls in examination of the CNS excitability and motor functions. 相似文献
