The COMPLEX I and COMPLEX II Gaussian dispersion models for complex terrain applications have been made available by EPA. Various terrain treatment options under IOPT(25) can be selected for a particular application, one of which [IOPT(25) = 1] is an algorithm similar to that of the VALLEY model. A model performance evaluation exercise involving three of the available options with both COMPLEX models was carried out using SF6 tracer measurements taken during worst-case stable impaction conditions in complex terrain at the Harry Allen Plant site in southern Nevada. The models did not reproduce observed concentrations on an event by event basis, as correlation coefficients for 1-h concentrations of 0-0.3 were exhibited. When observed and calculated cumulative frequency distributions for 1-h and 3-h concentrations were compared, a close correspondence between observations and concentrations calculated with COMPLEX I, IOPT(25) = 2 or 3 was noted; both options consistently overestimated observed concentrations. With IOPT(25) = 1, upper percentile (maximum) values in the calculated frequency distribution exceeded the corresponding IOPT(25) = 2 or 3 value by roughly a factor of 2, and observed values by 2.5-5. COMPLEX II typically produced maximum values 2-4 times as great as COMPLEX I for the same terrain treatment option. From these results it is concluded that: 1) the physically unrealistic sector-spread approach used in VALLEY and COMPLEX I under stable impaction conditions is a surrogate for wind direction variation, and 2) the doubling of the plume centerline concentration due to ground reflection under terrain impingement conditions that is included in IOPT(25) = 1 is inappropriate.

These findings were found to be consistent with an analysis of noncurrent observed and calculated SO2 χ/Q frequency distributions for 1, 3, and 24 hours near the Four Corners Plant in New Mexico. The comparison involved a four-year calculated χ/Q data set and a two-year observed χ/Q data set at the worst-case high terrain impact location near the plant.  相似文献

The State of Florida passed The Florida Solid Waste Management Act of 1988 mandating that county recycling programs be initiated by July 1, 1989. The legislation further expressed the goal that, at a minimum, recycling efforts reduce the amount of solid waste requiring final disposal or resource recovery by 30 percent by the end of 1994. This study was performed to determine the impact on recycle markets when the amounts of materials recycled from the municipal solid waste stream are increased by 30 percent in Florida.

The composition of the municipal waste stream was quantified in terms of the amounts of paper, plastic, metals, glass, and rubber. The effect of a 30 percent increase in the recycle rate of each class of material was calculated and compared to existing recycle rates in the State of Florida. It was determined that there are few capacity constraints on the increase in recycle rates for aluminum, steel (i.e., tin cans), and color separated glass. There are, however, serious constraints on increasing recycle rates for paper, plastics and rubber tires.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: A simplified approach for modeling transmission losses in a stream is presented. A theory relating seepage from a channel with the depth of flow is simplified to a one-parameter relationship. A power relationship is then utilized for the stage-discharge relationship, which is coupled with the seepage relationship. This combined equation is integrated over the channel reach to arrive at a general model for seepage loss through the reach, with one parameter needing calibration. An example is provided showing the development of the relationship and the calibration technique for the parameter. The results are shown, emphasizing the use of the model for simulation of channel transmission losses at low and moderate flow conditions.  相似文献

The use of a two-step thermal-oxidative analysis (TOA) technique for quantification of the mass of total carbon (TC) and elemental carbon (EC) of turbine engine-borne particulate matter (PM) has been evaluated. This approach could be used in lieu of analysis methods which were developed to characterize diluted PM. This effort is of particular interest as turbine engine PM emissions typically have a higher EC content than ambient aerosols, and filter sample mass loadings can be significantly greater than recommended for existing analysis techniques. Analyses were performed under a pure oxygen environment using a two-step temperature profile; reference carbon and actual PM samples were used to identify appropriate analysis conditions. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) methods were used to provide guidance on the nature of the carbon in several of the materials. This was necessary as a standard reference material does not exist for determination of the EC fraction in PM. The TGA also assisted in identifying an appropriate temperature range for the first-stage of the TOA method. Quantification of TC and EC for turbine engine PM samples using TOA was compared to results obtained using the NIOSH 5040 thermal-optical method. For first-stage TOA temperatures of 350°C and 400°C, excellent agreement between the techniques was observed in both the quantified TC and EC, supporting the viability for using TOA for analysis of turbine engine PM samples. A primary benefit of using TOA for these types of PM samples is that filters with relatively high PM mass loadings (sampled at the emission source) can be readily analyzed. In addition, an entire filter sample can be evaluated, as compared to the use of a filter punch sample for the NIOSH technique. While the feasibility of using a TOA method for engine PM samples has been demonstrated, future studies to estimate potential OC charring and oxidation of EC-type material may provide additional data to assess its impact on the OC/EC fractions for other carbon-type measurements.

Implications: This work presents results and procedures of an analytical method for the determination of total and elemental carbon, i.e., TC and EC present in combustion source particulate matter samples. In general, it is shown that the LECO TOA methodology is as reliable and comprehensive as NIOSH 5040 for determining TC and EC carbon types in particulate matter present in turbine emission sources, and should be considered as an alternative. Principles of the methodology, differences, and corresponding agreement with the standard NIOSH 5040 method and TGA analysis are discussed.  相似文献

Climate projections at relevant temporal and spatial scales are essential to assess potential future climate change impacts on climatologically diverse regions such as the northeast United States. Here, we show how both statistical and dynamical downscaling methods applied to relatively coarse-scale atmosphere-ocean general circulation model output are able to improve simulation of spatial and temporal variability in temperature and precipitation across the region. We then develop high-resolution projections of future climate change across the northeast USA, using IPCC SRES emission scenarios combined with these downscaling methods. The projections show increases in temperature that are larger at higher latitudes and inland, as well as the potential for changing precipitation patterns, particularly along the coast. While the absolute magnitude of change expected over the coming century depends on the sensitivity of the climate system to human forcing, significantly higher increases in temperature and in winter precipitation are expected under a higher as compared to lower scenario of future emissions from human activities.  相似文献

Aquaculture offers a major opportunity for the economic development of Baja California Sur (BCS), Mexico. The severely limited freshwater supply and the geographic isolation of the state place limits on other productive activities. Despite the aridity, the natural vegetation of BCS is diverse and structurally complex with a high percentage (20%) of endemic species. In this work we compare the environmental impacts produced by two kinds of aquaculture systems: coastal ponds vs. inland ponds. Construction and operation of coastal ponds does not require destruction of the natural vegetation and, as is true for inland ponds. Coastal ponds are also compatible with conservation of mangroves, sea grasses and sensitive habitats for fish and mollusks. To reduce the negative impacts of aquaculture and to protect the vegetation of Baja California Sur, we recommend the use of coastal ponds for shrimp production.  相似文献

The effect of aluminum sulfate (alum) addition on membrane performance was investigated, with a particular focus on membrane fouling. During initial operation, alum was added and the performance monitored. After terminating alum addition, the transmembrane pressure (TMP), which is indicative of membrane resistance to flow or fouling, increased. Accompanying the increase in TMP was an increase in the organic nonsettleable fraction (colloidal + dissolved) content of the mixed liquor and deterioration of permeate quality and floc strength. Permeate polysaccharide concentrations increased significantly, suggesting a preferential binding of solution polysaccharides by alum. Upon reinitiating alum addition, the TMP only partially recovered, indicating some irreversible fouling, while mixed liquor nonsettleable organic material, permeate quality, and floc strength returned to initial levels. These results suggest that direct alum addition to membrane bioreactors can improve membrane performance by reducing the organic fouling material and improving floc structure and strength. It appears that bulk liquid polysaccharides may contribute to irreversible membrane fouling, and this fraction can be efficiently controlled through the alum addition.  相似文献

Active sediment caps are being considered for addressing contaminated sediment areas in surface‐water bodies. A demonstration of an active cap designed to reduce advective transport of contaminants using AquaBlok® (active cap material) was initiated in a small study area of the Anacostia River in Washington, D.C. The cap remained physically stable, demonstrated the ability to divert groundwater flow, and was recolonized with native organisms after 30 months of monitoring following cap placement. However, the long‐term performance of active caps associated with harsh environmental conditions, hydrogeological settings, and subsurface gas production needs to be further evaluated. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献
