Whilst many studies of symbiotic dinoflagellate diversity have focused on tropical reef environments, only a few have explored the degree and pattern of divergence of these endosymbionts at high latitudes. In this study, the genetic diversity and specificity of symbiotic dinoflagellates associated with two common anthozoan hosts in the north-western Pacific Ocean was studied in four different seasons during a period of 1 year. Partial nucleotide sequences of 28S and complete ITS1 ribosomal DNA regions were used to identify, genetically, the endosymbionts extracted from the scleractinian Alveopora japonica and the actinarian Heteractis sp. A. japonica harbours symbionts belonging to Symbiodinium of clade F, while Heteractis sp. associates with Symbiodinium of clade C. Moreover, no seasonal changes in the endosymbiont community were detected in these two associations during this study. This is the first evidence that these two temperate cnidarian–microalgae symbioses are stable. Furthermore, we tested the apparent specificity of the Heteractis sp.– Symbiodinium sp. clade C association, by performing alga-infection experiments with aposymbiotic hosts, and monitoring the uptake and persistence of homologous and heterologous symbionts. The findings confirm the association patterns detected in the field and show that Heteractis sp. only establishes a successful association with Symbiodinium cells of clade C, at least among the heterologous symbionts occurring in the study area. Our results are consistent with the idea that selective pressures in highly fluctuating temperate environments might have granted symbiosis-specificity an adaptive value.Communicated by T. Dominance interactions determine reproductive status in many animal societies, including many cooperatively breeding vertebrates and eusocial Hymenoptera without queen-worker dimorphism. Typically, the dominant individual monopolises reproduction, and subordinates behave like helpers. In Dinoponera queenless ants, workers are totipotent females and can potentially reproduce, yet only the top-ranking worker actually reproduces. Individual workers ranked immediately below the dominant breeder worker (gamergate) are hopeful reproductives. Whether or not a worker benefits from joining the hierarchy of high-ranking workers depends on the trade-off between the probability of becoming dominant and reproducing directly, and the colony-level cost of an additional lazy high ranker. Inclusive fitness models predict that the length of the dominance hierarchy depends on relatedness, colony size, and the linearity of the hierarchy. Here, we test the effect of colony size by comparing hierarchy length among three species that differ in colony size (Dinoponera australis: median=14 workers, quartiles=10 and 19 workers; D. gigantea: median=41, quartiles=33 and 74; D. quadriceps: median=78, quartiles=55 and 90). Although difficulties in defining where the hierarchy ends hamper comparisons, the results are in broad agreement with the predictions. Hierarchies are close to the predicted lengths and are longer in species with larger colonies (one, three and three workers in the three species in order from smallest to largest colony vs two, three and four predicted). These conclusions are further supported by determining Kokko and Lindström's λ index of skew, which is smaller (i.e. characteristic of a longer hierarchy) in species with larger colonies.  相似文献

The feeding biology of the echinoid Tripneustes gratilla from a seagrass bed off Toliara, on the south-west coast of Madagascar, was investigated during the summer and winter seasons. Repletion indices of the gut of T. gratilla varied seasonally, in such a way that higher amounts of food occurred in the gut in winter than in other seasons. Conversely, a more detailed analysis of one summer and one winter sample of the gut tissue dry weights revealed higher weights in summer (February) than in winter (August). This was interpreted as a varying capability of nutrient storage and closely related to the feeding activity of the echinoid. This inverse relationship between feeding activity and nutrient storage was suggested to be dependent on gonadal growth. Indeed, higher food consumption was observed during the post-spawning period (August), that is, when most of the energy accumulated was used up for gonadal growth. Low feeding activity occurred when a sufficient amount of energy was accumulated in gut tissues (February), the time corresponding to the initiation of gonadal growth. Investigations on the feeding habits, using Ivlev's electivity index, revealed preferential feeding of T. gratilla on Syringodium isoetifolium, the dominant seagrass species found in the gut. This was partly related to the higher availability of that particular seagrass species in the field. However, its soft and terete leaf blade's morphology also makes it easier to manipulate and ingest. Studies on the feeding behaviour indicated the presence of a diel feeding cycle in T. gratilla individuals in both summer and winter seasons. Yet, its pattern varied between the two studied months (one summer and one winter) as the cycle was less contrasted during period of active feeding, i.e. in winter compared to summer. This study provides novel information on how intrinsic factors, such as physiological state, can govern the feeding activity of T. gratilla living in a seagrass habitat.  相似文献

Summary. Broad mite, Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Acari: Tarsonemidae) exhibits a specific phoretic relationship with whiteflies. Under field conditions most broad mites, caught in sticky traps, are attached to whiteflies. Under laboratory conditions, attachment occurs equally well in the dark and light. Mites do not differentiate between the sexes of their phoretic host Bemisia tabaci. However, mite attachment to B. tabaci is greatly diminished by washing the host with various organic solvents, chloroform in particular. The effect of whitefly waxy particles on broad mite behavior was studied using wax from the whitefly Aleyrodes singularis and from the mealybug Planococcus citri. Broad mites were not only attracted specifically to the A. singularis waxy particles-treated leaf areas but were also attached to leaf trichomes in this area. The results of this study suggests the importance of olfactory cues from the whitefly waxy particles in the recognition process of the phoretic host and/or the induction of the attachment behavior to whitefly legs or leaf trichomes.  相似文献

Hatching asynchrony in avian species leads to age and size differences between nestlings within a brood, handicapping last-hatched chicks in the sibling rivalry. Starvation due to this competitive disadvantage has been regarded as the primary cause of an increase in mortality with hatching order. However, for gulls it has also been suggested that disease is the cause of mortality for last-hatched chicks, possibly through reduced immunocompetence and thereby an enhanced susceptibility to infection. In addition, the male-biased mortality reported for several gull species may be related to a higher vulnerability to diseases in males compared to females. To determine the potential influence of the immune system on these mortality patterns, we investigated the T-cell-mediated immunity (CMI) of black-headed gull chicks in relation to hatching order and sex. We found a significant decrease in the CMI with hatching order. This result may be causally related to systematic changes in maternal yolk steroids and carotenoids within the laying sequence. For second-laid eggs, male CMI was significantly lower than female CMI. This is possibly linked to higher plasma levels of testosterone in male embryos which might have an immunosuppressive effect. If so, this effect is masked in eggs of either high (first egg) or low (last egg) quality. Chicks with low CMI showed enhanced mortality rates. Thus the differences in immune response are likely to contribute to the observed mortality patterns. However, hatching order significantly affected mortality independently of CMI, suggesting that competitive disadvantage due to hatching asynchrony is also important.Communicated by M. Genetic structure was studied in Platygyra sinensis from six sites in Hong Kong by allozyme electrophoresis using an isoelectric focusing gel (IEF). Seven variable loci were detected using six enzyme systems. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 3.3 to 3.6 in the six samples, and heterozygosity from 0.429 to 0.540. Genotype frequencies were generally close to Hardy–Weinberg expectations. The values of unique multilocus genotype to the number of individuals for each sample (NG/N) and observed genotypic diversity to expected genotypic diversity (GO/GE) were high, indicating a high level of sexual reproduction. Variation in allele frequencies among sites was low (FST=0.017), as was Nei's unbiased genetic distance (D), suggesting genetic similarity among sites.Communicated by T. Ikeda, Hakodate  相似文献

This study investigates the brief piping signals ("stop signals") of honey bee workers by exploring the context in which worker piping occurs and the identity and behavior of piping workers. Piping was stimulated reliably by promoting a colony's nectar foraging activity, demonstrating a causal connection between worker piping and nectar foraging. Comparison of the behavior of piping versus non-piping nectar foragers revealed many differences, e.g., piping nectar foragers spent more time in the hive, started to dance earlier, spent more time dancing, and spent less time on the dance floor. Most piping signals (approximately 99%) were produced by tremble dancers, yet not all (approximately 48%) tremble dancers piped, suggesting that the short piping signal and the tremble dance have related, but not identical, functions in the nectar foraging communication system. Our observations of the location and behavior of piping tremble dancers suggest that the brief piping signal may (1) retard recruitment to a low-quality food source, and (2) help to enhance the recruitment success of the tremble dance.  相似文献

Length of maternal care, i.e. the interval between successfully raised litters, is the most important factor explaining the variation in reproductive rate among brown-bear (Ursus arctos) populations. In this paper, we examine the variation in length of maternal care in radio-marked brown bears and its effect on their offspring in northern Sweden. Young stayed with their mothers for 1.4–1.5 or 2.4–2.5 (in one case 3.5) years and were weaned with body masses varying from 17 to 69 kg. The probability of yearling litters staying with their mother for a 2nd year increased with decreasing yearling body mass, and was higher for litters with two offspring than for litters with one or three to four offspring. Staying with their mothers for a 2nd year had a positive effect on mass gain in yearlings and this effect was more pronounced in litters with two than three to four offspring. Body mass of 2-year-olds was not related to age of weaning, suggesting that keeping offspring for an additional year mainly compensated for low yearling body mass. If large offspring body mass positively affects later offspring survival and reproduction, mothers may be able to optimize the length of maternal care according to the litter size and the size of their yearlings.Communicated by F. The effect of diel and seasonal changes in the distribution of fishes on a subtropical sandy beach on the southeastern coast of Brazil were studied. Seine netting was carried out on both seasonal and diel scales between July 1998 and June 1999. A total of 46 fish species was recorded, six being numerically dominant: Anchoa tricolor, Gerres aprion, Harengula clupeola, Atherinella brasiliensis, Mugil liza and Diapterus rhombeus. Seasonal changes in abundance of dominant species were detected. Species dominant in winter were Anchoa tricolor, H. clupeola and Atherinella brasiliensis; in spring, Anchoa tricolor and G. aprion; in summer G. aprion and D. rhombeus; and in autumn M. liza and H. clupeola. Overall, diel patterns did not reveal any significant trends; however, if we consider each season separately, an increase in A. tricolor abundance was recorded during the day in winter/spring, being replaced at night by H. clupeola in winter, and by G. aprion in spring. Increases in number of individuals and biomass at sunset, and decreases during the night were recorded. The winter/spring inshore/offshore movements at diel scale performed by the three most abundant species demonstrate that diel fluctuation acts more at a species-specific level than at a structural one; in summer there was no evidence of diel movements due to a heavy influx of G. aprion and D. rhombeus, which use the area throughout day and night, increasing overall abundance. Seasonal movements seems to be related to ontogenetic change in species, while diel movements in the fish assemblage seem to be more related to physiological requirements, such feeding activity of each particular species, than to physico-chemical conditions.Communicated by O.
