到目前为止,有关欧洲地表酸化水体大范围化学恢复的文献层出不穷,而有关生物恢复的报道并不多见.建立在现今欧洲排放减少计划之上的模型研究表明,化学恢复仍将继续.而影响恢复进程的诸多不确定性因素主要包括:未来生态系统内氮的可能行为和气候变化的影响.下列4个与气候变化相关的因子可能对未来恢复进程产生影响:①海水盐分入侵事件爆发频率和强度增加;②干旱发生频率和强度上升;③有机碳交换周期加快;④硝化作用增强.目前降低水体酸化程度的国际性协作是成功的,但是未来还有大量问题需要解决,也会遇到许多困难.对未来硫、氮排放减少后以及气候变化背景下酸化地表水体的水化学和水生生物变化需要继续监测.  相似文献

The study seeks to demonstrate the potential role that industrial ecology could play towards energy poverty reduction and environmental conservation in Kenya through sustainable charcoal production and consumption. This is achieved through an exploration of the application of the life cycle management (LCM) concept that identifies various opportunities for technological intervention for energy and environmental conservation and reduction of material and energy losses. It also identifies opportunities for income generation at various stages of the product’s life cycle; an aspect critical in poverty reduction in developing countries. The study finds that applying LCM in the charcoal trade in Kenya can deliver social, economic and environmental benefits to developing country communities and should, therefore, be promoted. However, appropriate legal, policy and institutional frameworks must exist in these countries for this to occur.  相似文献

The utility of stable isotope tracers for investigating the relationship between cadmium (Cd) partitioning in artificial sediment-water systems and Cd accumulation in a benthic detritivore (Asellus racovitzai, Isopoda) was explored. In the laboratory, Cd isotopes were applied to synthetic sediment and isotope concentrations were measured in sediment, overlying water and exposed asellids over a 10-day period. Isotope ratios measured in sediment and water were compared to ratios measured in asellids to determine whether Cd partitioning could predict metal bioaccumulation. Two different parameters which might affect Cd partitioning between the sediment and overlying water compartments were investigated: the chemical form in which Cd was added to systems, and the organic matter content of the sediment. To test the effect of chemical form on Cd partitioning, three isotopes of cadmium were individually applied to formulated sediment in varying combinations of 113Cd(NO3)2, 112Cd-humic acid (HA) 114CdSO4. The results demonstrated that chemical form did not influence partitioning, as the Cd isotope that was applied to sediment in the nitrate form exhibited similar partitioning between sediment and overlying water as the isotope that was applied in the sulfate or HA form. However, Cd isotope concentrations in overlying water were strongly related to the pattern of isotope accumulation in asellids suggesting that overlying water concentrations determined Cd bioaccumulation. In contrast, when the organic matter content of sediment was increased through the addition of Sphagnum peat moss, total Cd concentrations in overlying water and tissue were low, and there was no relationship between Cd-isotope concentrations in tissue and water. These results indicate that Cd accumulation occurred primarily from water, and factors that increase metal partitioning to sediment, such as increased sediment organic matter content, decrease Cd accumulation in asellids. The stable isotope tracer method described herein appears to be a useful technique for investigating the relationship between metal partitioning and bioaccumulation in simple sediment systems, but could also be extended to more complex systems, and used with different metals that have multiple stable isotopes.  相似文献

When present in the vadose zone, potentially toxic nitrate and perchlorate anions can be persistent sources of groundwater contamination. Gaseous electron donor injection technology (GEDIT), an anaerobic variation of petroleum hydrocarbon bioventing, involves injecting electron donor gases, such as hydrogen or ethyl acetate, into the vadose zone, to stimulate biodegradation of nitrate and perchlorate. Laboratory microcosm studies demonstrated that hydrogen and ethanol promoted nitrate and perchlorate reduction in vadose zone soil and that moisture content was an important factor. Column studies demonstrated that transport of particular electron donors varied significantly; ethyl acetate and butyraldehyde were transported more rapidly than butyl acetate and ethanol. Nitrate removal in the column studies, up to 100%, was best promoted by ethyl acetate. Up to 39% perchlorate removal was achieved with ethanol and was limited by insufficient incubation time. The results demonstrate that GEDIT is a promising remediation technology warranting further validation.  相似文献

This study was conducted to: (1) test the utility of a new and rapid analytical method, pyrolysis molecular beam mass spectrometry (py-MBMS), for the measurement and characterization of carbon in forest soils, and (2) examine the effects of natural disturbance on soil carbon dynamics. An additional objective was to test the ability of py-MBMS to distinguish recent from more stable humic substances, and to relate this information to the ecology and history of the sites. To test the utility of the py-MBMS technique, we investigated soil carbon stocks in a chronosequence of stands arising from natural disturbance in the Tionesta Scenic and Research Natural Areas. Soil carbon increased with increasing time since disturbance; although the exact shape of the carbon accumulation curve is not known, it appears that the rate of carbon accretion is initially rapid and then levels off, with a possible maximum of 86 metric tons/ha to a depth of 30 cm. This study also demonstrates that py-MBMS is a valid method for characterizing soil carbon and can be used with little sample preparation. In addition, multivariate analysis of the mass spectra from Tionesta soils can distinguish both sites and depths on the basis of their pyrolysis products; both long-lived and short-lived carbon forms were identified.  相似文献

Summary Indices of association are frequently used in studies of social behaviour. Observed association indices may be compared with those obtained from computer randomizations of the data in order to test whether any two individuals in a population tend to occur together more than would be expected by chance. Data for individually-identifiable colour-ringed sanderlings Calidris alba are presented to illustrate the importance of the assumptions on which such null models are built. When each individual was given an equal chance of appearing in each flock associations differed from those expected by chance. But when the different numbers of times that each individual occurred at the study site were taken into account associations were not different from those expected by chance. Hypotheses relating association levels to a number of factors were tested. None of the factors examined had significant and appreciable effects on association levels. In particular, there was no evidence for sanderlings moving around in stable groups. Taking into account the different distributions of different individuals, the population of birds present on any day represented a random sample from the population of birds seen during the winter. Protection of the environment post-mining is a key objective of rehabilitation, especially where runoff and erosion from rehabilitated mine sites could potentially lead to contamination of the surrounding land and watercourses. As part of an overall assessment of the success of rehabilitation at the former Nabarlek uranium (U) mine, an appraisal of stable lead (Pb) isotopes, radionuclides and trace metals within sediments and soils was conducted to determine the off site impacts from a spatial and temporal perspective. The study found localised areas on and adjacent to the site where soils had elevated levels of trace metals and radionuclides. Lead isotope ratios are highly radiogenic in some samples, indicating the presence of U-rich material. There is some indication that erosion products with more radiogenic Pb isotope ratios have deposited in sediments downstream of the former ore body. However, there is no indication that the radiogenic erosion products found on the mine site at present have significantly contaminated sediments further downstream of Cooper Creek.  相似文献

Of the three species of hirundine that breed sympatrically across the U.K., one, the barn swallow, has outer tail feathers elongated into streamers, whereas the other two species, the house martin and the sand martin, do not. The tail streamer of the barn swallow is regarded as a classic example of a sexually selected trait. Recent evidence, however, has suggested that streamers may have evolved largely through natural selection for enhanced flight performance and increased maneuverability. We tested the hypotheses that small streamers (1) increase performance in turning flight, but (2) decrease performance in flight variables related to velocity. We manipulated the lengths of house martin outer tail feathers and measured changes in their free-flight performance, using stereo-video to reconstruct the birds" three-dimensional flight paths. Five flight variables were found to best describe individual variation in flight performance. Of these five, the three variables determining maneuverability predicted that flight performance would be optimized by a 6- to 10-mm increase in the length of the outer tail feathers. In contrast, for mean velocity and mean acceleration, extension of the outer tail feathers appears to have a detrimental effect on flight performance. We suggest that the initial selection pressure for streamers in ancestral short-tailed "barn swallows" was via natural selection for increased maneuverability. In addition, we propose that the benefits of increased maneuverability have differed between hirundines in the past, such that the cost of increasing the length of the outer tail feather has, to date, outweighed the benefits of doing so in streamerless hirundines.
