The United Kingdom Acid Waters Monitoring Network (AWMN) was established in 1988 to determine the ecological impact of acidic emissions control policy on acid-sensitive lakes and streams. AWMN data have been used to explore a range of causal linkages necessary to connect changes in emissions to chemical and, ultimately, biological recovery. Regional scale reductions in sulphur (S) deposition have been found to have had an immediate influence on surface water chemistry, including increases in acid neutralising capacity, pH and alkalinity and declines in aluminium toxicity. These in turn can be linked to changes in the aquatic biota which are consistent with "recovery" responses. A continuation of the current programme is essential in order to better understand apparent non-linearity between nitrogen (N) in deposition and runoff, the substantial rise in organic acid concentrations, and the likely impacts of forecast climate change and other potential constraints on further biological improvement.  相似文献

This study evaluates the reliability of serum measurements of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and toxicity equivalence (TEQ) in individuals with no prior exposure to TCDD or dioxin-like compounds above background levels. Reliability was measured over three time-periods in the same individuals. TCDD and TEQ were measured in 127 and 128 participants. The values declined during the testing periods. Reliability coefficients for TCDD was 0.69 and for TEQ 0.91 but increased to 0.79 and 0.92, respectively, after removal of three outlying cases. Study results show good reliability over 22 months suggesting a consistency in the uptake and excretion of TCDD and other dioxin-like compounds.  相似文献

the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of filtration of secondary effluent on the mass transfer and disinfection efficiencies of two ozone contactors. The two contactors used in the comparison were a multicolumn bubble diffuser and a stirred tank reactor. The approach chosen was based on a type of statistical experimental design used in a previous contactor comparison. The design made it possible to compare the ozone transfer and coliform reduction efficiencies of the two contactors with respect to applied dose, while at the same time comparing filtered and unfiltered effluent. Results indicated that better mass transfer efficiency and, consequently, better coliform reduction efficiency occurred in the bubble diffuser, and the differences between contactors increased with dose. Mass transfer in both contactors was higher in unfiltered effluent than in filtered effluent. The most significant factors affecting the fecal coliform numbers in the treated secondary effluent were total chemical oxygen demand (COD) and absorbed ozone dose. Regression equations were developed to predict final coliform numbers as a function of COD and absorbed ozone dose.  相似文献

Phenotypic variation plays a critical role in determining the structural organisation and ecological function of wild populations. Animal groups are often structured according to factors such as species, sex, body size and parasite load, but it is unclear whether body shape also influences patterns of social organisation, and thus contributes to population phenotypic structure. Here, we use geometric morphometric analyses to determine whether wild-caught shoals of a freshwater fish, the western rainbowfish (Melanotaenia australis), are structured according to body size and shape. Using randomisation analyses, we show that the level of variation in size and shape observed in natural group assemblages is lower than that expected under a null model of random shoal composition. In addition, we found evidence of further phenotypic structuring along an upstream-downstream environmental gradient. The putative benefits of morphological assortment include a reduction in predation risk (due to prey oddity and predator confusion effects) and increased hydrodynamic or foraging efficiency. We suggest that morphological variation is a neglected component of population social organisation that can affect population processes, such as patterns of gene flow, and ecological interactions, such as predator-prey dynamics.  相似文献

A study of mercury concentrations in the stomach contents of fish from the north-east Irish Sea and Mersey Estuary has been shown to provide a means for surveillance of geographical and time-based changes in environmental exposure of fish biota to mercury in marine and estuarine ecosystems. This paper describes data for the flatfish dab (Limanda limanda), caught during the period 1986-1988. The low degree of variability in the data enables confirmation of clear trends in mercury concentration in stomach contents over time. As the inputs of mercury to the sewage sludge dumping ground in Liverpool Bay have decreased, there has been a corresponding decrease in mercury in fish food items. The mean mercury value in stomach contents around the dump site has declined to 100 microg kg(-1) (wet weight) which now predominates over the whole of Liverpool Bay. In 1986, mercury concentrations in stomach contents of fish ranged to over 750 microg kg(-1) although the majority of values were below 200 microg kg(-1). Most of the sites within the Mersey Estuary produced mean concentrations which were similar to those in the open sea, except for Garston which is the site closest to an inland, and principal alternative, source of mercury.  相似文献

Environmental surveillance of poliovirus (PV) plays an important role in the global program for eradication of wild PV. The bag-mediated filtration system (BMFS) was first developed in 2014 and enhances PV surveillance when compared to the two-phase grab method currently recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). In this study, the BMFS design was improved and tested for its usability in wastewater and wastewater-impacted surface waters in Nairobi, Kenya. Modifications made to the BMFS included the size, color, and shape of the collection bags, the filter housing used, and the device used to elute the samples from the filters. The modified BMFS concentrated 3–10 L down to 10 mL, which resulted in an effective volume assayed (900–3000 mL) that was 6–20 times greater than the effective volume assayed for samples processed by the WHO algorithm (150 mL). The system developed allows for sampling and in-field virus concentration, followed by transportation of the filter for further analysis with simpler logistics than the current methods. This may ultimately reduce the likelihood of false-negative samples by increasing the effective volume assayed compared to samples processed by the WHO algorithm, making the BMFS a valuable sampling system for wastewater and wastewater-impacted surface waters.  相似文献

New material of the enigmatic diapsid Khurendukhosaurus is described from the Mongolian type locality, Khuren Dukh, providing additional data on the vertebral column, pelvis, and hind limb. It confirms the choristoderan status of the genus and permits a more detailed phylogenetic analysis that supports a relationship between Khurendukhosaurus and the long-necked Asian Hyphalosauridae. The existence of tall caudal neural spines implies that Khurendukhosaurus was a deep-tailed swimmer. This and the open sacral costocentral sutures suggest a primarily aquatic lifestyle. Habitat corridors confer many conservation benefits by increasing movement of organisms between habitat patches, but the benefits for some species may exact costs for others. For example, corridors may increase the abundance of consumers in a habitat to the detriment of the species they consume. In this study we assessed the impact of corridors on insect herbivory of a native plant, Solanum americanum, in large-scale, experimentally fragmented landscapes. We quantified leaf herbivory and assessed fruit production as a proxy for plant fitness. We also conducted field surveys of grasshoppers (Orthoptera), a group of abundant, generalist herbivores that feed on S. americanum, and we used exclosure cages to explicitly link grasshopper herbivory to fruit production of individual S. americanum. The presence of corridors did not increase herbivory or decrease plant fruit production. Likewise, corridors did not increase grasshopper abundance. Instead, patches in our landscapes with the least amount of edge habitat and the greatest amount of warmer "core" area had the highest levels of herbivory, the largest cost to plant fruit production as a result of herbivory, and the most grasshoppers. Thus habitat quality, governed by patch shape, can be more important than connectivity for determining levels of herbivory and the impact of herbivory on plant fitness in fragmented landscapes.  相似文献

The application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), particularly Large Eddy Simulation, for the modelling of buoyant turbulent plumes, has been demonstrated to be very accurate, but computationally expensive. Here a more basic, and therefore more generally practicable, approach is presented. Commercial CFD software is used to model such plumes using Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence models. A careful comparison is made between the numerical predictions and well-established results regarding the bulk properties of plumes. During this process, we are able to observe the well-known approximate Gaussian nature of the plume and achieve quantitative agreement with empirical plume spread coefficients. The use of numerical modelling allows for the investigation of the flow field and turbulence in those regions of the plume of most interest—the plume edge and near source regions. A comprehensive sensitivity study is conducted to identify the limits of applicability of this modelling approach. It is shown that the standard modelling approach of Morton, Taylor and Turner, which introduced the well-known entrainment assumption, pertains in a region well above the source region. At the plume edge, the levels of turbulence are contrasted with the value of the entrainment parameter. Finally, the effects of forcing the plumes with additional momentum at the source are considered, including the case of a pure jet. We show how these forced plumes eventually lose their momentum excess and tend to the behaviour of a pure, buoyant plume.  相似文献
