Renewable energies for climate benign fuel production. Powering fuel-cell vehicles

Transportation contributes to energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, while sustainable mobility requires reductions in both areas. Alternative fuels from natural gas and from renewable resources can contribute in the mid and long-term to the fuel market for mobile as well as stationary applications. The lack of reliable data on emissions, energy chain efficiencies, and costs demonstrates the need for field tests and demonstration projects. Fuel cells offer the technology to use ‘new fuels’ in a highly efficient way.     

Isoenzyme

Isoenzymes, especially non-allelic forms, are enzyme variants with different primary structure, apparently adapted during phylogeny to distinct physiological conditions. They are ideal research objects either for studies of structure-function relationship and morphogenesis in vertebrates or as diagnostic indicators for pathological processes.     

Analyse von polycyclischen aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffen (PAK)

An interlaboratory test was organized by the Allgemeine Unfallversicherungsanstalt, Dept. HUB (Department for the Prevention of Occupational Accidents and Diseases) for the analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). The aim of the test was to compare analytical results of serveral laboratories performing PAH analysis as routine work. In a preliminary study four different PAH-containing solutions were analyzed by independent laboratories in Germany and Austria. The concentrations of 17 PAH (according to the relevant NIOSH-methods) were to be determined. The results reveal the problems involved in the analysis of PAH.     

Miniaturization,genome size and the origin of functional constraints in the visual system of salamanders

During their evolution, many species of lungless salamanders (fam. Plethodontidae) have experienced a great increase in genome size and consequently in the size of their cells, including sensory receptors and neurons. In addition, some have become extremely miniaturized. The consequences of these events and the morphological compensatory processes are studied in the visual system of juvenile and adult salamanders.     

Phosphorgehalte und -bindimgsformen in den Sedimenten von Elbe,Traye, Eider und Schwentine

The eutrophication status of rivers is changed to a large degree by discharge of waste waters containing high amounts of phosphates from use of detergents. Sediments from the river Elbe in the port of Hamburg, and upstream from this town, and from some parts of the rivers Trave, Eider, and Schwentine are highly enriched with phosphorus. The phosphorus contents of up to 8300 ppm are about five to tenfold higher than the phosphorus contents of intensively fertilized soils. Phosphates accumulated in sediments are mainly bound as iron phosphates of different composition in a relatively labile binding form from which considerable amounts may be released to the water by various mobilization processes.
