Cichlids are an excellent model to study explosive speciation and adaptive radiation. Their evolutionary success has been attributed to their ability to undergo rapid morphological changes related to diet, and their particular breeding biology. Relatively minor changes in morphology allow for exploitation of novel food resources. The importance of phenotypic plasticity and genetically based differences for diversification was long recognized, but their relationship and relative magnitude remained unclear. We compared morphology of individuals of four wild populations of the Lake Tanganyika cichlid Tropheus moorii with their pond-raised F(1) offspring. The magnitude of morphological change via phenotypic plasticity between wild and pond-bred F(1) fish exceeds pairwise population differences by a factor of 2.4 (mean Mahalanobis distances). The genetic and environmental effects responsible for among population differentiation in the wild could still be recognized in the pond-bred F(1) fish. All four pond populations showed the same trends in morphological change, mainly in mouth orientation, size and orientation of fins, and thickness of the caudal peduncle. As between population differentiation was lower in the wild than differentiation between pond-raised versus wild fish, we suggest the narrow ecological niche and intense interspecific competition in rock habitats is responsible for consistent shape similarity, even among long-term isolated populations. 相似文献

Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from soil are characterized by strong emission pulses. Although several mechanisms are known to create them, pulses are difficult to predict. Currently there is no established systematic way to identify pulses from long-term static chamber measurement results. In this study we suggest a simple algorithm for pulse identification. The algorithm was applied on time series of N2O and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes from a field study on the long-term impact of fertilization and tillage practice. Between 4 and 9% of N2O values were pulse values; 20-60% of total emission was emitted as pulses. Minimum tillage resulted in more pulses than plowing. In contrast, long-term averages of N2O losses from nitrogen (N) fertilizer were similar (3-4%) for all management practices. N2O emissions per crop yield for increased fertilization practice were double the values for reduced fertilization practice independent of tillage practice. CO2 emission pulses were scarce and there was no significant effect of management practice on CO2 pulse probability. 相似文献

The main objective of the MADAM project (Mangrove Dynamics and Management) is to generate the scientific basis enabling the
sustainable stewardship of the resources of the Caeté mangrove estuary in Northeast Brazil in the sense of integrated coastal
(zone) management. To achieve this, it is necessary to acquire in-depth knowledge of natural processes as well as of the relevant
institutional, cultural, economic, social and political dynamics. Causal linkages within the ecosystem, as well as between
ecosystem, economy and society, are analysed and explained via dynamic and trophic modelling. Scenario construction is intended
to forecast the effects of acute or chronic interference on utilized resources, and to answer wider, management-related questions

developed and modified in the context of research results from the initial 2-yr project phase. It is argued that a continuous

Acute (24 h) toxicity tests were conducted to determine the toxicity of the fungicide chlorothalonil towards the freshwater bdelloid rotifer (Philodina acuticornis odiosa). Since rotifers are the dominant zooplankton species in many inland freshwater lakes in Australia, the influence of salinity on chlorothalonil toxicty was also assessed. The rotifers used in this study appeared to be reasonably tolerant to changes in salinity, with little mortality observed at 3760 µS cm?1, increasing thereafter at higher salinity. The bdelloid rotifers were, however, found to be highly sensitive to chlorothalonil (24 h LC50, 3.2 µg L?1) with results also suggesting that as salinity increases, so does toxicity (e.g., 24 h LC50 at 5000 µS cm?1, 0.5 µg L?1). 相似文献

Heavy metal (HM) levels in soil samples taken from surface soil horizon (up to 30 cm depth) and in the bodies of two invertebrate groups (earthworms as detritophagous and snails as phytophagous) were investigated during the vegetation period of 1993 in Central Moravia. Within the frame of large scale monitoring the above samples were taken repeatedly in ten selected habitats, mostly Protected Landscape Areas (PLA) and forests, and heavy metal levels of seven elements (Cd, Pb, Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Fe) were estimated by AAS after laboratory treatment. In soil samples three HM forms (fixed, soluble and available) were differentiated. Results indicated that the individual HM are distributed in a characteristic way both in soil and in invertebrate bodies. A relative comparison indicated that soil is the main depot for Pb, Cr, Mn and Fe, whereas biomass accumulates mainly Zn, Cu and Cd (related to kg dry matter). Characteristic differences were also found in the HM levels between detritophagous (earthworms) and phytophagous (snails) invertebrates. The behaviour of animals towards their mirror image (“mirror test”) is routinely used as a proxy to measure aggression levels, especially in fish. The lack of evidence for visual self-recognition in fish supports this method. However, recent work points towards different hormonal and gene expression responses when fish are exposed either to conspecific opponents or to their mirror image, urging for validation of this widespread method. Here, we test the predictive value of mirror tests in three sympatric cichlid species from Lake Tanganyika: the cooperative breeder Neolamprologus pulcher, the polygamous shell brooder Telmatochromis vittatus and the monogamous, biparental piscivore Lepidiolamprologus elongatus. In particular, we compare differences in restrained and overt aggression levels for individuals of each species when confronted with a mirror or a live conspecific. The three species differed in response to the two contest situations. While in N. pulcher both aggressive responses were correlated between the mirror test and the live opponent fight, there was no such relationship in T. vittatus and L. elongatus. Thus, the mirror test appears to be a suitable surrogate for intraspecific aggression in N. pulcher, while aggression against a mirror image has limited predictive value for intraspecific aggression in the other two species. These results underline the importance of validating the mirror test’s predictive value in a study species before drawing conclusions from mirror tests about aggressiveness under natural, social conditions. 相似文献
