Acute and chronic toxicity of veterinary antibiotics to Daphnia magna 总被引:49,自引:0,他引:49
The acute and chronic toxicity of nine antibiotics used both therapeutically and as growth promoters in intensive farming was investigated on the freshwater crustacean Daphnia magna. The effect of the antibiotics metronidazole (M), olaquindox (OL), oxolinic acid (OA), oxytetracycline (OTC), streptomycin (ST), sulfadiazine (SU), tetracycline (TC), tiamulin (TI) and tylosin (TY) was tested in accordance to the ISO (1989) and OECD (1996) standard procedures. The acute toxicities (48-h EC50 value, mg/l) in decreasing order were OA (4.6), TI (40), SU (221), ST (487), TY (680) and OTC (approximately 1000). NOECs were 340 mg/l for TC and 1000 mg/l for M and OL. Toxic effect on reproduction occurred generally at concentrations, which were one order of magnitude below the acute toxic levels. The chronic toxicity (EC50 values, mg/l) in the D. magna reproduction test in decreasing order were TI (5.4), SU (13.7), TC (44.8) and OTC (46.2). The NOECs (mg/l) obtained in the reproduction test with OA, ST, TY and M were 0.38 for OA, 32 for ST, 45 for TY and 250 for M. The observed toxicity of OA to D. magna indicates that this substance, which is a commonly used feed additive in fish farms, has a potential to cause adverse effects on the aquatic environment. 相似文献

In order to investigate topsoils as potential sinks for chlorinated solvents from the atmosphere, the degradation of trichloromethane (CHCl(3)), 1,1,1-trichloroethane (CH(3)CCl(3)), tetrachloromethane (CCl(4)), trichloroethene (C(2)HCl(3)) and tetrachloroethene (C(2)Cl(4)) was studied in anoxic laboratory experiments designed to simulate denitrifying conditions in water unsaturated topsoil. Active denitrification was demonstrated by measuring the release of 15N in N(2) to the headspace from added 15N labeled nitrate. Based on lake sediment data, archaeological findings, and historical records, we describe rapid transformations, resilience and resistance in societies and ecosystems, and their interactions in the past in the North Water area related to changes in climate and historical events. Examples are the formation of the polynya itself and the early arrival of people, ca. 4500 years ago, and later major human immigrations (different societies, cultural encounters, or abandonment) from other regions in the Arctic. While the early immigrations had relatively modest and localised effect on the ecosystem, the later-incoming culture in the early thirteenth century was marked by extensive migrations into and out of the area and abrupt shifts in hunting technologies. This has had long-lasting consequences for the local lake ecosystems. Large natural transformations in the ecosystems have also occurred over relatively short time periods related to changes in the polynya. Finally, we discuss the future perspectives for the North Water area given the many threats, but also opportunities. 相似文献

Sorption and mobility of metronidazole, olaquindox, oxytetracycline and tylosin in soil 总被引:25,自引:0,他引:25
Laboratory studies were conducted to characterise four different antibiotic compounds with regard to sorption and mobility in various soil types. Distribution coefficients (Kd values) determined by a batch equilibrium method varied between 0.5 and 0.7 for metronidazole, 0.7 and 1.7 for olaquindox and 8 and 128 for tylosin. Tylosin sorption seems to correlate positively with the soil clay content. No other significant interactions between soil characteristics and sorption were observed. Oxytetracycline was particularly strongly sorbed in all soils investigated, with Kd values between 417 in sand soil and 1026 in sandy loam, and no significant desorption was observed. Soil column leaching experiments indicated large differences in the mobility of the four antibiotic substances, corresponding to their respective sorption capabilities. For the weakly adsorbed substances metronidazole and olaquindox the total amounts added were recovered in the leachate of both sandy loam and sand soils. For the strongly adsorbed oxytetracyline and tylosin nothing was detected in the leachate of any of the soil types, indicating a much lower mobility. Results from defractionation and extraction of the columns (30 cm length) showed that 60-80% of the tylosin added had been leached to a depth of 5 cm in the sandy loam soil and 25 cm in the sand soil. 相似文献

Cannibalistic tendencies are well known in spiders and may be a significant factor influencing population size. The wolf
spider, Pardosa agrestis, is the dominant non-web-building spider in a wide range of central European agricultural habitats. Preliminary field observations
indicated an extended reproductive period, which results in a very wide size distribution of juvenile instars. We hypothesised
that if cannibalism is enhanced by differences in size, especially during periods when prey is scarce, these populations might
be susceptible to cannibalism in an ecologically significant way. Laboratory studies were conducted on juvenile P. agrestis in arenas. We analysed the following specific aspects of cannibalism: (1) the effect of the weight ratio between the opponents;
(2) the effect of weight per se, and (3) the role of hunger level in determining cannibalistic tendencies of spiders. The
role of weight and hunger were analysed in separate experiments, in both cases by controlling for the other variable. The
results showed that cannibalism was strongly positively correlated with both weight ratio and hunger, but absolute size/age
of an individual could not predict the occurrence of a cannibalistic event. These experiments generated the plausible hypothesis
that cannibalism might be an important phenomenon in the regulation of real populations, which should be tested specifically
in future field experiments.

Adaptations of meadow pipits to parasitism by the common cuckoo 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Summary The meadow pipit Anthus pratensis is one of the most frequent hosts in Europe parasitized by the common cuckoo Cuculus canorus. The cuckoo normally removes one or more of the host eggs and replaces them with one of its own. The aim of the present study, which was conducted in an upland area of Central Norway, was to test the following question: assuming the cuckoo has laid a mimetic egg (which is slightly larger than and slightly different in color from that of a meadow pipit egg), under what circumstances are the parent meadow pipits able to detect such parasitism? The reaction of the meadow pipits to artificial parasitism was tested. Plastic model cuckoo eggs were used that bore a striking resemblance to real cuckoo eggs found in other meadow pipit nests in the same area. In addition, in some experiments a stuffed cuckoo dummy was used. The meadow pipits tolerated the experimental procedures and remained in their nests when given an artificial cuckoo egg, with or without removal of one of the host's eggs. However, when a host egg was removed and replaced with an artificial cuckoo egg, and at the same time a stuffed cuckoo dummy was presente, 50% of the birds deserted their nests. The difference between this result and the results of the other experiments was statistically significant. When only the stuffed cuckoo was presented, without any egg manipulations, the meadow pipits reacted in the same way as in the egg experiments. We conclude that the meadow pipit is capable of detecting whether or not its nest has been parasitized, provided it has observed the cuckoo near the nest site. Furthermore, because of the results of our experiments, we reject the hypothesis that the cuckoo has evolved egg removal behavior in order to prevent the host from assessing an increase in egg numbers. 相似文献

It is generally thought that the laterofrontal cirri of the bivalve gill act as filters that retain suspended particles in the through current and transfer the particles onto the frontal surface of the gill filaments. In Mytilus edulis calculations indicated that if water passed between the branching cilia of the cirri that are assumed to constitute the filter the pressure drop needed would amount to about 10 times the actual pressure drop across the whole gill. Thus, instead of acting as filters the laterofrontal cirri seem to move water. Presumably, the cirri together with the frontal cilia produce the water currents along the frontal surface of the gill filaments. Particle retention in the bivalve gill implies the transfer of suspended particles from the current of water about to enter an interfilamentar space into a neighbouring frontal surface current. The complex three-dimensional pattern of flow that arises where the 2 systems of current meet is characterized by steep velocity gradients. Particles that enter such steep, steady velocity gradients become exposed to transverse forces that cause the particles to migrate perpendicularly to the direction of flow. Whether particles enter the surface current, i.e. are retained, or they stay within the through current andescape, depends primarily upon particle size, and upon the steepness and height of the gradients within the boundary zone between the surface current and through current. Further studies are needed to evaluate the capacities and relative importance of this hydromechanical particle-trapping mechanism in suspension feeding bivalves. It is suggested that in downstream particle-retaining systems, e.g. on the tentacles of polychaetes and entoprocts, velocity gradients between through currents and surface currents also act as the particle-collecting mechanism. 相似文献

Adult magpies Pica pica provide parasitic great spotted cuckoo Clamator glandarius nestlings with a diet very similar to that fed to their own chicks. In both naturally and experimentally parasitized nests, great spotted cuckoo chicks were fed at a higher rate than magpie chicks in the same nest. This preferential allocation of food by magpie parents to great spotted cuckoo chicks is consistent with the supernormal stimulus hypothesis, because this result implies that cuckoo chicks provide stronger stimuli for parental care than host chicks. Great spotted cuckoo chicks receive most of the food brought to the nest by the foster parents, because they exploit a series of stimuli which jointly (or sometimes individually) operate as a supernormal stimulus. This hypothesis predicts that if any stimulus is masked, the efficiency of the cuckoo in eliciting parental care will decrease. Here, we analyze experimentally the effects of two of these stimuli, preferential feeding of large nestlings and of nestlings with conspicuous palatal papillae. Firstly, when we experimentally introduced one medium-sized (7–9 days) cuckoo chick into an unparasitized magpie nest where the largest magpie chick was 12–15 days old, the cuckoo did not receive significantly more food than the average or the largest magpie chick.
