Close to the Sellafield Reprocessing Plant activity concentrations of many radionuclides including the long-lived 137Cs and actinides on tide-washed pastures bordering the Irish Sea are high compared with other terrestrial ecosystems in the United Kingdom. Despite the comparatively high deposition of radionuclides, contamination of agricultural products from tide-washed pastures is lower than would be predicted from studies in terrestrial ecosystems. This is because the main source of contamination in tide-washed pasture, radionuclides associated with sedimentary particles, has low availability for uptake by plant roots and in the gut of ruminants. Generalised Derived Limits (GDLs), published by the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) are estimates of environmental radioactivity concentrations which would potentially be radiologically significant. These provide a benchmark against which environmental measurements can be assessed. In the past, several comparisons of radioactivity concentrations in tide-washed pastures with GDLs have been made, but only some of these comparisons are valid since current approaches used to assess doses are not always strictly appropriate to these ecosystems. This research tested whether limnological conditions, biological characteristics of fish and anthropogenic impacts influenced the assimilation of methylmercury into the muscle of a sedentary piscivorous fish, Cichla spp., from three rivers (Negro, Madeira, Tapajós) and two hydroelectric reservoirs (Balbina, Tucuruí) within the Brazilian Amazon. Methylmercury in this fish ranged from 0.04 to 1.43microgg(-1) w.w. across sites. No significant differences were observed in the methylmercury concentrations between males and females, or for different morphotypes of this species. Positive correlations were found between methylmercury and fish body weight. No differences were found between the weight normalized methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations or its percent of total mercury in fish from the three rivers; weight normalized MeHg was highest in one of the two reservoirs. In Rio Tapajós, where gold mining and deforestation cause high water turbidity, fish showed the highest MeHg and concentrations were different across the four sites examined. Summary Previously we reported that inter-litter competition reduces the survival of pups born to pairs of female rats living and breeding in the same nesting environment. Inter-litter competition occurred when females gave birth asynchronously; specifically, when a female gave birth in the presence of 15 to 28-day-old pups, her newborn pups were likely to die as a result of nest intrusion by the older pups. In contrast, inter-litter competition occurred rarely when the two females gave birth synchronously. Because theories of facultative sex ratio adjustment predict that mothers giving birth in unfavorable circumstances should bias their offspring towards the more viable or less expensive sex, we predicted that litters born asynchronously would be female biased. Conversely, we also predicted that females giving birth under favorable conditions, i.e., synchronously, would bias their litters toward males. We found a female bias in asynchronous litters, but did not find a male bias in synchronous litters. Moreover, in contrast to other reports in the literature, the female bias in asynchronous litters was achieved without a reduction in litter size. Based on correlational data, we suggest several mechanisms that could produce this female bias: conditions at fertilization and implantation, time since the male last mated and number of pups suckling concurrently during gestation.

Arsenic (As) ranks first on the 2005 and 2007 hazardous substances priority lists compiled for the Comprehensive Environmental
Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). This study describes two New Orleans soil As surveys: (1) a survey of
composite soil samples from 286 census tracts and (2) a field survey of soil As at 38 play areas associated with the presence
of chromated-copper-arsenate (CCA)-treated wood on residential and public properties. The survey of metropolitan New Orleans
soils revealed a median As content of 1.5 mg/kg (range <0.2–16.4) and no distinctive differences between the soils of the
city core and outlying areas. Play area accessible soils associated with CCA-treated wood (N = 32) had a median As of 57 mg/kg and 78% of the samples were ≥12 mg/kg, the Louisiana soil As standard. The field survey
of play areas for CCA-treated wood (N = 132 samples at 38 sites) was conducted with a portable energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer. Seventy-five
of 132 wood samples (56.8%) were deemed CCA-treated wood. Of the 38 play areas surveyed, 14 (36.8%) had CCA-treated wood.
A significant association (Fisher’s exact p-value = 0.348 × 10−6) was found between CCA-treated wood and soil As (N = 75). At one elementary school CCA-treated woodchips (As range 813–1,654 mg As/kg) covered the playgrounds. The situation
in New Orleans probably exists in play areas across the nation. These findings support a precautionary program for testing
soils and wood for hazardous substances at all play areas intended for children. 相似文献

In locating noxious facilities, such as a trash disposal plant or a hazardous waste disposal incinerator, the host community frequently incurs all the costs while other communities in the region receive the benefits. We propose a mechanism for sharing the benefits with the potential loser. Each community submits a sealed bid indicating the minimum amount it would require to host the facility. The site providing the lowest bid obtains the facility and receives its bid as compensation. This compensation is financed by the other communities. If there are N candidate communities, then each of the other communities would pay 1/(N − 1) of their acceptance bid. A series of controlled laboratory experiments show that the outcomes of this low-bid auction come close to predictions from a theoretical model based on maxi-min rules. The market rate of return on private investment is often used as the discount rate when conducting cost-benefit analysis (CBA) of public projects. I argue that the decision to invest pits current consumption against future consumption, both of which accumulate to the private decision maker. Public projects, on the other hand, provide benefits that accrue to society in general. To examine the appropriateness of discount rates based on returns to private investment, this paper considers lab experiments designed to test whether individuals discount personal and social benefits at different rates. Personal benefits are captured through personal monetary payments, while social benefits are captured through anonymous donations to charitable organizations. The study of reproductive isolation as a prerequisite to sympatric speciation has been limited by the focus on species that
have already experienced such isolation. However, a complete understanding of how such processes evolve depends on observing
taxa before they complete the speciation process. We studied the potential for sexual isolation in the polyphenic mole salamander,
Ambystoma talpoideum, using a series of laboratory and field experiments. This species consists of aquatic paedomorphic adults and terrestrial
metamorphic adults which are exhibited by both sexes and which mate in the same aquatic habitat. Previous field studies on
this species suggested that intermorph breeding would be less common during the winter months, because paedomorphic adults
begin breeding in early autumn and thus may have less energy available for reproduction in the winter. Laboratory experiments
conducted during the winter showed that the mating behavior of paedomorphic males occurred at a much lower frequency than
that of metamorphic males. In contrast, field experiments that best mimicked natural conditions revealed symmetric intermorph
breeding and included multiple paternity shared among males of each morph. This and other studies suggest that there is little
evidence of sexual isolation among morphs based on behavioral interactions alone. However, the potential for partial isolation
still occurs because of temporal and spatial differences in the frequencies of each morph in nature. Our results suggest that
further studies on this system, and other similar polyphenisms, may provide valuable insight into the mechanisms that underlie

Paraeuchaeta norvegica (8.5 mm total length) and yolk-sac stage Atlantic cod larvae (4 mm total length) (Gadus morhua) larvae were observed in aquaria (3 l of water) using silhouette video photography. This allowed direct observations (and quantitative measurement) of predator–prey interactions between these two species in 3-dimensions. Tail beats, used by cod larvae to propel themselves through the viscous fluid environment, also generate signals detectable by mechanoreceptive copepod predators. When the prey is close enough for detection and successful capture (approximately half a body-length), the copepod launches an extremely rapid high Reynolds number attack, grabbing the larva around its midsection. While capture itself takes place in milliseconds, minutes are required to subdue and completely ingest a cod larva. The behavioural observations are used to estimate the hydrodynamic signal strength of the cod larva’s tail beats and the copepod’s perceptive field for larval fish prey. Cod larvae are more sensitive to fluid velocity than P. norvegica and also appear capable of distinguishing between the signal generated by a swimming and an attacking copepod. However, the copepod can lunge at much faster velocities than a yolk-sac cod larva can escape, leading to the larva’s capture. These observations can serve as input to the predator–prey component of ecosystem models intended to assess the impact of P. norvegica on cod larvae. 相似文献
