A local strain of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense (ATCI01), which predominantly produces C2 toxin, was fed to the clams (Ruditapes philippinarum) under laboratory conditions. Concentrations of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) in the dosed clams were determined by High Performance Liquid Chromatographic (HPLC) analyses, and the clams were homogenized and then fed to the gastropods (Nassarius festivus). In the toxin accumulation phase, which lasted for 42 days, concentrations of PSTs increased in the snails gradually, reaching a maximum of 1.10 nmole g(-1) at the end of the exposure period. The toxin content of the homogenized clams (food) was 13.18 nmole g(-1), which was about 12-fold higher than the PST content in the snails. Between day 43 and day 82, the snails were fed with non-toxic clams, and this period represented the depuration phase. Accumulation and depuration rates of PSTs in the snails, N. festivus, were determined by fitting the experimental data to user-defined parameters program using a one-compartment model. Two different modeling approaches were used to derive the accumulation and depuration rates. The first approach is to derive both values from the data for the toxin uptake. The second approach is to derive depuration rate from the depuration data and then to derive uptake rate, allowing for toxin depuration, from the data for toxin uptake. The first approach yielded more consistent results for the toxin concentration at the end of the uptake period, when compared with the experimental data. The toxin uptake and depuration rates were 1.64 (pmole of toxin into snail per day) per (nmole g(-1) of toxin in food) and 0.06+/-0.02 day(-1) (mean+/-SE), respectively. The toxin profiles of snails were similar to the clams, but different from the algae. Besides C toxins (C1 and C2), dcGTX2 and dcGTX3 were also detected in both clams and snails. The beta:alpha epimer ratio gradually decreased during trophic transfer and approached a ratio of 1:3 (26.4 mol%:73.6 mol% at day 42) in the snails, near the end of the accumulation period.  相似文献

The soil metal contamination arising from the discharge of the high density of electroplating factories in the geographic center of Taiwan has prompted concern about human exposure to harmful metals. This study aimed to determine the levels of nickel (Ni) in urine of residents living in the high vs. low factory-density areas, and to examine how these levels relate to gender and age. A total of 660 subjects, resident in the area for the last five years, were sampled according to the stratified random sampling approach, at ages 35-44, 45-54, and 55-64years for both genders. Metals in urine samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). The geometric mean (95% confidence interval (CI)) of urinary Ni was 6.30 (5.99-6.62)mug/l. The 0.95 parametric reference interval (90% CI) of urinary Ni was estimated to be 1.74 (1.62-1.88) to 22.73 (21.14-24.44)mug/l. Subjects in the areas with a high density of electroplating factories had significantly higher urinary Ni levels than those in the low-density areas, but both types of areas had obviously higher urinary Ni levels when compared to the non-occupationally exposed population from western countries. The health significance of elevated urinary Ni and its causative factors remain to be determined.  相似文献

Solution-grown single crystals of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB-co-4HB)] were hydrolyzed by polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) depolymerase from Ralstonia pickettii T1. Enzymatic degradation proceeded from the edges of lamellar crystals, yielding serrated contour and small crystal fragments. Gel permeation chromatography analysis revealed that the molecular weights of the crystals decreased during enzymatic degradation, suggesting that the enzymatic hydrolysis of chain-folding regions at the crystal surfaces occurred in addition to the enzymatic degradation at crystal laterals or edges. After P(3HB-co-4HB) single crystals were aminolysed in 20% aqueous methylamine solution to remove the folded-chain regions and enzymatic degradation by lipase from Rhizopus oryzae to remove 4HB components at crystal surfaces of single crystal aminolyzed, it was found that a small amount (up to ca. 2 mol%) of 4HB component can be incorporated into the P(3HB) mother crystal lattice irrespective of the 4HB content.  相似文献

In this study, chlorine dioxide (ClO2) was used as an alternative disinfectant with vanillic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, and humic acid as the organic precursors in a natural aquatic environment. The primary disinfection by-products (DBPs) formed were trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). Under neutral conditions (pH = 7) for vanillic acid, more total haloacetic acids (THAAs) than total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) were found, with a substantial increase during the later stages of the reaction. In the case of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, the amount of THAAs produced was minimal. Raising the concentration of ClO2 was not favorable for the control of THAAs in low concentrations of vanillic acid. ClO2 could reduce the total amount of TTHMs and THAAs for higher concentration of vanillic acid. It was found that the humic acid treatment dosage was not significant. Under alkaline conditions (pH = 9), the control of TTHMs and THAAs for the treatment of vanillic acid was better and more economical, however, an appreciable amount of inorganic by-products were observed. Under the same alkaline condition, the control of THAA for the treatment of p-hydroxybenzoic acid was not beneficial and for the treatment of humic acid was not significant.  相似文献

In this study, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions from two batch-type medical waste incinerators (MWIs), one with a mechanical grate and the other with a fixed grate, both operated by a medical center, were assessed. Both MWIs shared the same air-pollution control devices (APCDs), with an electrostatic precipitator and a wet scrubber installed in series. Results show that when APCDs were used, total PAHs and total benzo[a]pyrene equivalent (total BaP(eq)) emission concentrations of both MWIs were reduced from 2220 to 1870 microg/m3 and 50 to 12.4 microg/m3, respectively. We used the Industrial Source Complex Short Term model (ISCST) to estimate the ground-level concentrations of the residential area and the traffic intersection located at the downwind side of the two MWIs. For the traffic intersection, we found both total PAHs and total BaP(eq) transported from MWIs to both studied areas were not significant. For the residential area, similar results were found when APCDs were used in MWIs. When APCDs were not included, we found that total PAHs transported from MWIs accounted for < 12%, but total BaP(eq) accounted for > 90%, of the on-site measured concentrations. These results suggest that the use of proper APCDs during incineration would significantly reduce the carcinogenic potencies associated with PAH emissions from MWIs to the residential area.  相似文献

This investigation used UV light of 365 nm and titanium dioxide in aqueous suspension to study the photocatalytic reaction of o-methylbenzoic acid under the influence of pH values, anion additives and the varieties of titanium dioxide. From experimental results, under the condition of 5 g/l TiO2, pH 3 and light intensity of 2.45 mW/cm2, 0.1 mM of o-methylbenzoic acid could be completely decomposed in 2 h. The reaction was faster with lowering pH, and was found to be apparent first-order following Langmuir-Hinshelwood model. In the presence of anion additives, the inhibitive effect of chloride ions was larger than that of sulfate ions under acidic condition for Degussa brand titanium dioxide, but without influence using Janssen brand. Both brands, however, promoted the mineralization of o-methylbenzoic acid (o-MBA).  相似文献

Clay that contains kaolinite has been used extensively as a raw material for manufacturing of bricks and china at 900-1100 degrees C. This study used clay to stabilize the contaminant chromium(VI) [Cr(VI)] through a heating process at 500-1100 degrees C. X-ray absorption spectroscopic results indicated that the 500-900 degrees C heating process transformed hazardous Cr(VI) to nontoxic Cr(III); Cr2O3 was the species detected as most abundant. The 1100 degrees C heating process caused the formation of Cr2SiO5, which was not detected in the samples heated at 500-900 degrees C. Fourier transformed extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectra were fitted by use of WinXAS software. Phase shifts and backscatter(ing) amplitudes for specific atom pairs, based on the crystallographic data for CrO3 and Cr2O3, were theoretically calculated with the FEFF software. The processed XAS data show that the first shell coordination numbers were similar to each other as the temperature was increased from 500 to 900 degrees C and 1100 degrees C, implying that their Cr(III) crystallite size was relatively similar. The interatomic distance between the target center element and the first shell for the 500-1100 degrees C samples was 1.98 A. The Debye-Waller factor for the 1100 degrees C sample was increased compared with the 500 and 900 degrees C samples and probably indicates the formation of Cr2SiO5.  相似文献

Prenatal sonographic diagnoses of two cases of severe limb defects after first-trimester chorionic villus sampling (CVS) are presented. Pathological examination after elective termination correlated well with the prenatal sonographic findings. Although the relationship between CVS and limb defects remains controversial, careful ultrasound examination for possible limb defects in cases receiving CVS is recommended.  相似文献

We report on a woman with four successive pregnancies affected with X-linked hydrocephalus (XLH). The first child had prenatal craniocentesis and died in utero. The second child had a postnatal shunting operation, but suffers from severe growth and mental retardation at 5 years of age. In the third pregnancy, prenatal ultrasound detected hydrocephalus at the 16th and 20th weeks of gestation and the pregnancy was terminated. In the fourth pregnancy, ultrasound scanning at the 17th and 20th weeks of gestation revealed no remarkable findings, but hydrocephalus was detected at the 24th week. Autopsy confirmed the prenatal diagnosis. DNA polymorphism analysis of the Bell site of exons 17–18 of factor VIII gene of the woman and her last two fetuses seemed to be compatible with a linkage between the XLH locus and factor VIII gene. Although XLH has a variable presentation of ventriculomegaly, ultrasound scanning is still a useful tool for prenatal diagnosis at present. Earlier and more accurate prenatal diagnosis will be feasible with molecular analysis of the XLH locus or its flanking regions.  相似文献

The distribution of nano/micron dicarboxylic acids and inorganic ions in size-segregated suburban aerosol of southern Taiwan was studied for a PM episode and a non-episodic pollution period, revealing for the first time the distribution of these nanoscale particles in suburban aerosols. Inorganic species, especially nitrate, were present in higher concentrations during the PM episode. A combination of gas-to-nuclei conversion of nitrate particles and accumulation of secondary photochemical products originating from traffic-related emissions was likely a crucial cause of the PM episode. Sulfate, ammonium, and oxalic acid were the dominant anion, cation, and dicarboxylic acid, respectively, accounting for a minimum of 49% of the total anion, cation or dicarboxylic acid mass. Peak concentrations of these species occurred at 0.54 μm in the droplet mode during both non-episodic and PM episode periods, indicating an association with cloud-processed particles. On average, sulfate concentration was 16–17 times that of oxalic acid. Oxalic acid was nevertheless the most abundant dicarboxylic acid during both periods, followed by succinic, malonic, maleic, malic and tartaric acid. The mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) of oxalic acid was 0.77 μm with a bi-modal presence at 0.54 μm and 18 nm during non-episodic pollution and an MMAD of 0.67 μm with mono-modal presence at 0.54 μm in PM episode aerosol. The concomitant formation of malonic acid and oxalic acid was attributed to in-cloud processes. During the PM episode in the 5–100 nm nanoscale range, an oxalic acid/sulfate mass ratio of 40.2–82.3% suggested a stronger formation potential for oxalic acid than for sulfate in the nuclei mode. For total cations (TC), total inorganic anions (TIA) and total dicarboxylic acids (TDA), major contributing particles were in the droplet mode, with least in the nuclei mode. The ratio of TDA to TIA in the nuclei mode increased greatly from 8.40% during the non-episodic pollution period to 28.08% during the PM episode, favoring dicarboxylic acid formation in the nuclei mode. The evidence suggests stronger formation strength and contribution potential exists for dicarboxylic acids than for inorganic salts in nanoscale particles, especially in PM episode aerosol.  相似文献
