Superabsorbent polymers (SAP) are used, inter alia, as soil amendment to increase the water holding capacity of soils. Biodegradability of soil conditioners has become a desired key characteristic to protect soil and groundwater resources. The present study characterized the biodegradability of one acrylate based SAP in four agricultural soils and at three temperatures. Mineralisation was measured as the 13CO2 efflux from 13C-labelled SAP in soil incubations. The SAP was either single-labelled in the carboxyl C-atom or triple-labelled including additionally the two C-atoms interlinked in the SAP backbone. The dual labelling allowed estimating the degradation of the polyacrylate main chain. The 13CO2 efflux from samples was measured using an automated system including wavelength-scanned cavity ring-down spectroscopy. Based on single-labelled SAP, the mean degradation after 24 weeks varied between 0.45 % in loamy sand and 0.82 % in loam. However, the differences between degradation rates in different soils were not significant due to a large intra-replicate variability. Similarly, mean degradation did not differ significantly between effective temperature regimes of 20° and 30 °C after 12 weeks. Results from the triple-labelled SAP were lower as compared to their single-labelled variant. Detailed results suggest that the polyacrylate main chain degraded in the soils, if at all, at rates of 0.12–0.24 % per 6 months. 相似文献

Goal, Scope and Background Reducing occupant exposure to indoor mold is the goal of this research, through the efficacy testing of antimicrobial cleaners.
Often mold contaminated building materials are not properly removed, but instead surface cleaners are applied in an attempt
to alleviate the problem. The efficacy of antimicrobial cleaners to remove, eliminate or control mold growth on surfaces can
easily be tested on non-porous surfaces. However, the testing of antimicrobial cleaner efficacy on porous surfaces, such as
those found in the indoor environment such as gypsum board can be more complicated and prone to incorrect conclusions regarding
residual organisms. The mold Stachybotrys chartarum has been found to be associated with idiopathic pulmonary hemorrhage in infants and has been studied for toxin production
and its occurrence in water damaged buildings. Growth of S. chartarum on building materials such as gypsum wallboard has been frequently documented.
Methods Research to control S. chartarum growth using 13 separate antimicrobial cleaners on contaminated gypsum wallboard has been performed in laboratory testing.
Popular brands of cleaning products were tested by following directions printed on the product packaging.
Results A variety of gypsum wallboard surfaces were used to test these cleaning products at high relative humidity. The results indicate
differences in antimicrobial efficacy for the six month period of testing.
Discussion Results for the six types of GWB surfaces varied extensively. However, three cleaning products exhibited significantly better
results than others. Lysol All-Purpose Cleaner-Orange Breeze (full strength) demonstrated results which ranked among the best
in five of the six surfaces tested. Both Borax and Orange Glo Multipurpose Degreaser demonstrated results which ranked among
the best in four of the six surfaces tested.
Conclusions The best antimicrobial cleaner to choose is often dependent on the type of surface to be cleaned of S. chartarum contamination. For Plain GWB, no paint, the best cleaners were Borax, Lysol All-Purpose Cleaner-Orange Breeze (full strength),
Orange Glo Multipurpose Degreaser, and Fantastik Orange Action.
Recommendations and Perspectives These results are not meant to endorse the incomplete removal of mold contaminated building materials. However, it is recognized
that complete removal may not always be possible and solutions to control mold regrowth may contribute to reduced occupant
exposure. Current recommendations of removal and replacement of porous building materials should be followed.
It is not the intension of this discussion to endorse any product. Reporting on the performance of these products under the
stated conditions was and remains the only purpose.

The vacuum bag (VB) dust from the homes of 19 asthmatic children in North Carolina (NC) was analyzed by mold specific quantitative PCR. These results were compared to the analysis of the VB dust from 176 homes in the HUD, American Healthy Home Survey of homes in the US. The Environmental Relative Moldiness Index (ERMI) was calculated for each of the homes. The mean and standard deviation (SD) of the ERMI values in the homes of the NC asthmatic children was 16.4 (6.77), compared to the HUD survey VB ERMI value mean and SD of 11.2 (6.72), and was significantly greater (t-test, p = 0.003) in the NC asthmatic children's homes. The molds Chaetomium globosum, Aspergillus fumigatus, and the Eurotium Group were the primary species in the NC homes of asthmatics, making the ERMI values significantly higher (p < 0.02 for each). Vacuum bag dust analysis may be a useful method for estimating the mold burden in a home. 相似文献

Batesian mimicry evolves when a palatable species, the “mimic,” resembles a dangerous species, the “model,” because both receive
protection from predation. Yet, this protection should break down where the model is absent, because predators in such areas
would not be under selection to avoid the model. Here, we test this prediction in a coral snake mimicry complex. We exposed
plasticine replicas of milk snakes that closely mimic coral snakes to natural predators to determine if good mimetic milk
snakes are preferentially attacked in allopatry with their model. Moreover, we evaluated whether attack rates on these replicas
varied among three different allopatric regions that differed in the type of mimic found locally (i.e., good mimic, poor mimic,
or no mimic). When all three regions were considered together, mimics were not preferentially attacked. When regions were
analyzed separately, however, attacks on mimics were significantly greater than randomness only where good mimics were found.
These variable levels of predation on good mimics might reflect frequency-dependent (i.e., apostatic) predation. In allopatric
regions where good mimics are present, predators might have learned or evolved preferences for conspicuous, palatable prey
that they encounter frequently. By contrast, in allopatric regions where good mimics are absent, predators might not have
learned or evolved preferences for novel phenotypes. Thus, when predation is frequency-dependent, as long as good mimics are
rare, they might not experience elevated levels of predation in allopatry with their model as predicted by the Batesian mimicry

Solid liquid separation of animal slurry is a method to reduce the excess nutrient loads from intensive livestock production. Five different separation technologies (sedimentation, centrifugation, pressurized filtration, polymer flocculation and drainage, and iron chloride addition + polymer flocculation and drainage) were applied to pig and cattle slurry in a laboratory study. Separation efficiencies of mass, dry matter (DM), N, and P were measured. Particle size fractionation of the solid fractions was performed by subjecting them to wet fractionation and C, organic N (N(org)), and P contents were subsequently measured. Chemical pretreatment with polymer before gravity drainage separated DM, total N, and P from raw pig and cattle slurry with the highest efficiencies. Sedimentation and centrifugation separated P from pig and cattle slurries with higher simple separation efficiencies (0.77 and 0.70, respectively) compared with pressurized filtration (0.15 and 0.37). Pressurized filtration transferred the lowest masses (14 and 18%) to the solid fractions. Solid fractions from pig slurry generally contained higher concentrations of P and C compared with cattle slurry solid fractions. The majority of C in solid fractions was present in particles > 25 microm, whereas N and P were present in larger proportions in particles < 25 microm. Concern about nitrogen loads in marine environments has drawn attention to the existence and possible causes of long-term trends in nitrogen transport in rivers. The present study was based on data from the Swedish environmental monitoring programme for surface water quality; the continuity of these data is internationally unique. A recently developed semiparametric method was employed to study the development of relationships between runoff and river transport of nitrogen since 1971; the observed relationships were then used to produce time series of flow-normalised transports for 66 sites in 39 river basins. Subsequent statistical analyses of flow-normalised data revealed only few significant downward trends (p 0.05) during the time period 1971–1994, and the most pronounced of these downward trends were caused by reduced point emissions of nitrogen. The number of significant upward trends was substantially larger (15 for total-N and 18 for NO3-N). Closer examination of obtained results revealed the following: (i) the most pronounced upward trends were present downstream of lakes, and (ii) observed increases in nitrogen transport coincided in time and space with reduced point emissions of phosphorus or organic matter. This indicated that changes in the retention of nitrogen in lakes were responsible for the upward nitrogen trends. The hypothesis that nitrogen saturation of forest soils has caused a general increase in the riverine export of nitrogen from forested catchments in Sweden was not confirmed. Adaptive cluster sampling (ACS) is a sampling technique for sampling rare and geographically clustered populations. Aiming
to enhance the practicability of ACS while maintaining some of its major characteristics, an adaptive sample plot design is
introduced in this study which facilitates field work compared to “standard” ACS. The plot design is based on a conditional
plot expansion: a larger plot (by a pre-defined plot size factor) is installed at a sample point instead of the smaller initial
plot if a pre-defined condition is fulfilled. This study provides insight to the statistical performance of the proposed adaptive
plot design. A design-unbiased estimator is presented and used on six artificial and one real tree position maps to estimate
density (number of objects per ha). The performance in terms of coefficient of variation is compared to the non-adaptive alternative
without a conditional expansion of plot size. The adaptive plot design was superior in all cases but the improvement depends
on (1) the structure of the sampled population, (2) the plot size factor and (3) the critical value (the minimum number of
objects triggering an expansion). For some spatial arrangements the improvement is relatively small. The adaptive design may
be particularly attractive for sampling in rare and compactly clustered populations with an appropriately chosen plot size

Changes in disturbance rates due to climate change may increase or decrease diversity, whereas permanent loss of habitat is generally believed to decrease diversity. It is, however, very likely that the effects of disturbances and habitat destruction interact. Understanding such combined effects is essential to predict the response of communities to global changes and in particular which functional types of species are most endangered. Using an individual-based spatially explicit community model, we investigate (1) whether diversity-disturbance curves alter when spatially uncorrelated or autocorrelated habitat destruction is added, and (2) which functional types of species are able to survive under these altered conditions. Model communities consisted of four functional types of species trading off between colonisation ability and competition strength. We found that habitat destruction may alter both height and shape of diversity-disturbance curves: maximum diversity at intermediate disturbance rates may shift to other disturbance rates or even split into two peaks giving rise to bimodal diversity-disturbance relationships with different sub-communities persisting at low and high disturbance rates. Diversity responded differentially depending on how the colonisation-competition trade-off was represented. Our results suggest that, for trade-offs in seed production rate, generally the best coloniser will better withstand the interacting effects of habitat destruction and changing disturbance rates; however, for trade-offs in mean dispersal distances, functional types characterized by intermediate abilities will perform best. We conclude that predictions of the impacts of changing disturbance rates on biodiversity depend on community structure and cannot be made without knowledge of concurrent permanent habitat destruction. 相似文献

Riparian zones are known to function as buffers, reducing non-point source pollution from agricultural land to streams. In the Netherlands, riparian zones are subject to high nitrogen inputs. We combined hydrological, chemical and soil profile data with groundwater modelling to evaluate whether chronically N loaded riparian zones were still mitigating diffuse nitrate fluxes. Hydraulic parameters and water quality were monitored over 2 years in 50 piezometres in a forested and grassland riparian zone. Average nitrate loadings were high in the forested zone with 87 g NO(3)(-)-N m(-2) y(-1) and significantly lower in the grassland zone with 15 g NO(3)(-)-N m(-2) y(-1). Groundwater from a second aquifer diluted the nitrate loaded agricultural runoff. Biological N removal however occurred in both riparian zones, the grassland zone removed about 63% of the incoming nitrate load, whereas in the forested zone clear symptoms of saturation were visible and only 38% of the nitrate load was removed. 相似文献
