Paleolimnological and molecular genetic techniques were combined to reconstruct the long-term patterns in Daphnia community composition in Hannah Lake--a lake recovering from industrial acidification, metal contamination and faunal extirpation. Like many zooplankters, Daphnia produce diapausing eggs that can remain viable for decades and even over a century. Yet, the appearance of D. mendotae in Hannah Lake during the last two decades is likely the outcome of dispersal from other nearby lakes, not by colonization from the sediment egg-bank. Our genetic tests using PCR, SSCP and sequencing indicate that D. mendotae diapausing eggs are absent within the sediment record of the previous 250 years and that, prior to metal smelting operations in the region, the community was dominated by D. pulicaria. This species shift following the lake's chemical restoration is consistent with earlier historical changes in lake acidity. Environmental fluctuations may have governed community composition throughout Hannah Lake's more ancient past. Extending this molecular-paleolimnological approach to other lakes should help develop more accurate formulations of the biological recovery process. 相似文献

Surface water acidity is decreasing in large areas of Europe and North America in response to reductions in atmospheric S deposition, but the ecological responses to these water-quality improvements are uncertain. Biota are recovering in some lakes and rivers, as water quality improves, but they are not yet recovering in others. To make sense of these different responses, and to foster effective management of the acid rain problem, we need to understand 2 things: i) the sequence of ecological steps needed for biotic communities to recover; and ii) where and how to intervene in this process should recovery stall. Here our purpose is to develop conceptual frameworks to serve these 2 needs. In the first framework, the primarily ecological one, a decision tree highlights the sequence of processes necessary for ecological recovery, linking them with management tools and responses to bottlenecks in the process. These bottlenecks are inadequate water quality, an inadequate supply of colonists to permit establishment, and community-level impediments to recovery dynamics. A second, more management-oriented framework identifies where we can intervene to overcome these bottlenecks, and what research is needed to build the models to operationalize the framework. Our ability to assess the benefits of S emission reduction would be simplified if we had models to predict the rate and extent of ecological recovery from acidification. The effects of potassium fertilization and ozone stress were investigated in a clone of Picea abies (L.) Karst, by studies of the uptake of CO(2) by the crowns, the element content, on leaching of the youngest needles, and the longevity of the needles. All plants were exposed to 0.075 microl litre(-1) SO(2) from January to April 1986. The average ozone concentrations applied during the subsequent growing season (May-December) were 0, 0.027, 0.050 and 0.100 microl litre(-1). Half of the trees received liquid fertilizer applications from April to July 1986. CO(2) uptake by the crowns was significantly reduced in non-fertilized plants at ozone doses of 100-200 microl litre(-1) h, whereas similar reductions were recorded in fertilized plants only above an ozone dose of 300 microl litre(-1) h. Independent of the fertilization, however, the concentrations of calcium, magnesium and nitrogen in the needles increased in parallel with the ozone dose, whilst potassium, phosphorus and sulphur showed little response to ozone. In both nutrient regimes, the diffusive loss of elements from chloroform-washed needles was similar and tended to be reduced at the highest ozone concentration, when relating the leachate to the corresponding element content in the needles. Needles formed in the highest ozone treatment were significantly shed during the succeeding year, regardless of the nutrient supply. Since 1971 unshaded leaves from the top of marked beech trees (Fagus sylvatica L.) in the vicinity of a regional waste incinerator have been sampled every year in early September. The unwashed leaf samples were analyzed for the concentration of Cl- and, in some years, for 16 other elements. The operation of the waste incinerator distinctly increased the Cl- concentration in the foliage. When the flue gas filtration did not work properly, several other elements also accumulated (without any obvious dust accumulation). There were no significant correlations between precipitation and concentration of water-soluble elements in foliage samples. This suggested that precipitation was not accelerating foliar leaching so that the bioindication of pollutant accumulation is not restricted in foliage with a well developed cuticula. 相似文献

An evaluation of Khmer refugee public health services found a strong cultural preference for older females as Community Health Workers (CHWs), in contrast to the young males employed. Class conflicts were identified between educated, upper-class CHWs and the uneducated camp majority. Poor community acceptance of the CHWs impaired their effectiveness, and was attributed to age, sex and socioeconomic barriers. Based on these evaluation findings, the refugee health program was restructured to include a preponderance of female workers. A repeat survey demonstrated enhanced program effectiveness following this change.

Values are the fundamental reasons why people engage in conservation behaviors. Recent research has called for a more refined approach to studying values in a way that accounts for the concept of eudaimonia. However, the empirical properties for a eudaimonic value scale have not been tested given that previous investigations have remained at the theoretical level. Drawing from an on-site survey of visitors to Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska, we used a latent profile analysis to better understand the expression of multiple values of nature. Specifically, we segmented respondents by their value orientations with a particular focus on evaluating eudaimonic and hedonic values, alongside the established dimensions of altruistic, biospheric, and egoistic values. We identified 4 distinct subgroups defined by value orientations and validated these subgroups based on measures of conservation behavior and sociodemographic characteristics (e.g., age). These results indicated campaign messaging should harness a combination of eudaimonic, biospheric, and altruistic values to propel individual behavior. We also observed that hedonic and egoistic values defined how people related to nature and played a role, albeit less pronounced, in motivating them to take action. Our study is one of the first efforts to operationalize eudaimonia in a conservation context; thus, we have opened a new avenue for protected-area managers to align their strategies with the underlying values of stakeholders. 相似文献

Mice were gavaged with either 14C-labeled 2,2′5,5′ tetrachlorobiphenyl; 3,3′,4,4′ tetrachlorobiphenyl; or perfluorooctanoic acid. Absorption of these compounds was determined by assay of feces collected for 48 h after the gavage. Part of the animals received test diets containing olestra during this 48-hour period to determine its effect on absorption of the compounds. Mice that received the diet without olestra during this period were divided into groups that either continued the diet without olestra or changed to a diet containing olestra. These diets were continued for 7 days, and a second 48-hour fecal collection was made to measure the effect of olestra on enterohepatic circulation of the compounds and their metabolites. The animals were sacrificed, and blood, fat, and liver concentrations of 14C were measured. Olestra decreased the absorption of 2,2′,5,5′ tetrachlorobiphenyl. It also reduced tissue and blood concentrations of this compound. Olestra also decreased the absorption of 3,3′,4,4′ tetrachlorobiphenyl, but it did not alter enterohepatic circulation or tissue concentrations. Olestra significantly increased the excretion of perfluorooctanoic acid in the second 48-hour collection, suggesting an effect on enterohepatic circulation. It did not, however, alter tissue concentrations of perfluorooctanoic acid. As the number of leaking underground fuel tank sites with methyl tertiary butyl ehter (MTBE) contamination continues to grow, there is a need to develop cost-effective solutions for treatment of soil and water contamination. MTBE poses special challenges because of its physicochemical properties, in particular high solubility and low Henry's constant, low affinity for sorption, and very slow rate of microbial degradation. Advanced oxidation processes tend to generate undesirable by-products. Based on laboratory studies with hollow fiber membranes (HFM), a field-scale unit was constructed and tested at a number of sites, to determine the effectiveness of this technology in dealing with MTBE contamination. In addition, to treat the soil contamination, the HFM unit was coupled with a Spray Aeration Vapor Extraction (SAVE) unit, which is based on an internal combustion engine. The engine provides the means to treat soil vapors, as well as organic vapors from the spray aeration and HFM units. The overall treatment objectives of 5μg/l for MTBE and 1 μg/l for benzene were achieved with a treatment train consisting of an ion exchange unit, a spray aeration system, a hollow fiber membrane module and two granular activated carbon (GAC) units, for flowrates ranging from 3.8 to 30 l/min (1 to 8 gal/min). The ion exchange unit sewed to reduce water hardness and avoid scaling in the subsequent treatment units, extending the run-time of the entire system. Overall removal efficiencies for the spray aeration system and hollow fiber membrane module ranged from 85 to over 99 percent. High removal efficiencies (> 97%) were obtained at elevated water temperatures (54°C) or lower flowrates (up to 11 l/min). The GAC units were used only to polish the effluent and meet the discharge requirements. Soil, water, and gas phases are treated with this system.
