This article is based on a multimethod study designed to clarify influences on wildfire hazard vulnerability in Arizona’s
White Mountains, USA. Findings reveal that multiple factors operating across scales generate socially unequal wildfire risks.
At the household scale, conflicting environmental values, reliance on fire insurance and firefighting institutions, a lack
of place dependency, and social vulnerability (e.g., a lack of financial, physical, and/or legal capacity to reduce risks)
were found to be important influences on wildfire risk. At the regional-scale, the shift from a resource extraction to environmental
amenity-based economy has transformed ecological communities, produced unequal social distributions of risks and resources,
and shaped people’s social and environmental interactions in everyday life. While working-class locals are more socially vulnerable
than amenity migrants to wildfire hazards, they have also been more active in attempting to reduce risks in the aftermath
of the disastrous 2002 Rodeo-Chediski fire. Social tensions between locals and amenity migrants temporarily dissolved immediately
following the disaster, only to be exacerbated by the heightened perception of risk and the differential commitment to hazard
mitigation displayed by these groups over a 2-year study period. Findings suggest that to enhance wildfire safety, environmental
managers should acknowledge the environmental benefits associated with hazardous landscapes, the incentives created by risk
management programs, and the specific constraints to action for relevant social groups in changing human-environmental context. 相似文献
Coalbed methane is an important resource of energy. Meanwhile CO2 sequestration in coal is a potential management option for greenhouse gas emissions. An attractive aspect to this process is that CO2 is adsorbed to the coal, reducing the risk of CO2 migration to the surface. Another aspect to this is that the injected CO2 could displace adsorbed methane leading to enhanced coalbed methane recovery. Therefore, in order to understand gas migration within the reservoir, mixed-gas adsorption models are required. Moreover, coal reservoir permeability will be significantly affected by adsorption-induced coal swelling during CO2 injection. Coal swelling is directly related to reservoir pressure and gas content which is calculated by adsorption models in reservoir simulation. Various models have been studied to describe the pure- and mixed-gas adsorption on coal. Nevertheless, only the Langmuir and Extended Langmuir models are usually applied in coal reservoir simulations. This paper presents simulation work using several approaches to representing gas adsorption, implemented into the coal seam gas reservoir simulator SIMED II. The adsorption models are the Extended Langmuir model (ELM), the Ideal Adsorbed Solution (IAS) model and the Two-Dimensional Equation of State (2D EOS). The simulations based on one Australian and one American coal sample demonstrated that (1) the Ideal Adsorbed Solution model, in conjunction with Langmuir model as single-component isotherm, shows similar simulation results as the ELM for both coals, with the IAS model representing the experimental adsorption data more accurately than the ELM for one coal and identically with the ELM for the other coal; (2) simulation results using the 2D EOS, however, are significantly different to the ELM or IAS model for both coal samples. The magnitude of the difference is also dependent on coal swelling and the well operating conditions, such as injection pressure. 相似文献
An animal’s use of space may be strongly influenced by habitat edges and neighboring conspecifics encountered in and around
its home range. Habitat edges are known to affect species density and distribution, but their impact on home range use is
largely unknown. Additionally, among large animals, interactions with neighbors become particularly important as increasing
home range size leads to decreasing exclusivity of resource use, but the effect of neighbors on home range use remains poorly
understood. Here, we examine the influence of neighbors and habitat edges on the ranging patterns of three groups of Phayre’s
leaf monkeys (Trachypithecus phayrei crepusculus) in northeast Thailand over a period of more than 2 years. The study animals occupied dry evergreen forest, and adjacent
patches of dry dipterocarp forest created a habitat edge and formed barriers between some groups. We found that the use of
home range interiors was 50–90% higher than the border areas, indicating concentrated use of resources within the home range.
The use of peripheral areas was influenced by social organization, the presence of neighboring groups, and forest edges. While
one multimale group showed no particular habitat preference, two single-male groups preferred areas bordering dry dipterocarp
habitat and avoided areas bordering neighboring groups, suggesting that the threat of neighbors mediated border presence.
Additionally, groups may have been attracted to the forest edge, where conspecific competitors are absent and increased sunlight
may increase resource abundance and/or quality. This study revealed that the use of border areas can be modulated by neighboring
groups and habitat edges, thereby adding to our understanding of home range use among territorial species in heterogeneous
habitats. 相似文献
Much research on the health effects of outdoor air pollution has been published in the last decade. The goal of this review is to concisely summarize a wide range of the recent research on health effects of many types of outdoor air pollution. A review of the health effects of major outdoor air pollutants including particulates, carbon monoxide, sulfur and nitrogen oxides, acid gases, metals, volatile organics, solvents, pesticides, radiation and bioaerosols is presented. Numerous studies have linked atmospheric pollutants to many types of health problems of many body systems including the respiratory, cardiovascular, immunological, hematological, neurological and reproductive/ developmental systems. Some studies have found increases in respiratory and cardiovascular problems at outdoor pollutant levels well below standards set by such agencies as the US EPA and WHO. Air pollution is associated with large increases in medical expenses, morbidity and is estimated to cause about 800,000 annual premature deaths worldwide [Cohen, A.J., Ross Alexander, H., Ostro, B., Pandey, K.D., Kryzanowski, M., Kunzail, N., et al., 2005. The global burden of disease due to outdoor air pollution. J Toxicol Environ Health A. 68: 1-7.]. Further research on the health effects of air pollution and air pollutant abatement methods should be very helpful to physicians, public health officials, industrialists, politicians and the general public. 相似文献
Review articles can provide valuable summaries of the ever‐increasing volume of primary research in conservation biology. Where findings may influence important resource‐allocation decisions in policy or practice, there is a need for a high degree of reliability when reviewing evidence. However, traditional literature reviews are susceptible to a number of biases during the identification, selection, and synthesis of included studies (e.g., publication bias, selection bias, and vote counting). Systematic reviews, pioneered in medicine and translated into conservation in 2006, address these issues through a strict methodology that aims to maximize transparency, objectivity, and repeatability. Systematic reviews will always be the gold standard for reliable synthesis of evidence. However, traditional literature reviews remain popular and will continue to be valuable where systematic reviews are not feasible. Where traditional reviews are used, lessons can be taken from systematic reviews and applied to traditional reviews in order to increase their reliability. Certain key aspects of systematic review methods that can be used in a context‐specific manner in traditional reviews include focusing on mitigating bias; increasing transparency, consistency, and objectivity, and critically appraising the evidence and avoiding vote counting. In situations where conducting a full systematic review is not feasible, the proposed approach to reviewing evidence in a more systematic way can substantially improve the reliability of review findings, providing a time‐ and resource‐efficient means of maximizing the value of traditional reviews. These methods are aimed particularly at those conducting literature reviews where systematic review is not feasible, for example, for graduate students, single reviewers, or small organizations. 相似文献

neural computing and evolutionary programming, this work is meant to serve as a foundation for literature review and a premise
for the exploration of new advancements as we enter into the 21st century. 相似文献
The geographical distributions, seasonal variations in numerical abundance and biomass (mg C m-3) of the predators of the holoplankton of the Bristol Channel, between November 1973 and February 1975, are described. The predator numbers and biomass were dominated by the chaetognath Sagitta elegans Verrill. This species represented 96% of the holoplankton carnivore biomass in the outer, seaward region of the Channel and 60% in the inner region; the remainder being ctenophores. The maximum numerical abundance of S. elegans occurred in September at 129 individuals m-3 (18 mg C m-3). Juveniles (<5 mm) reached maximum numbers of 55 individuals m-3 during June, August and September, demonstrating the reproductive activity of the population. The peak numbers were probably the result of the development of two major generations over the 90 d period from mid-June to mid-September. The tentaculate ctenophores were represented by Pleurobrachia pileus (O. F. Müller). The highest abundance was 81 individuals m-3 (3.0 mg C m-3) at a single site in July in the South Central Channel. However, June was the only month when the ctenophores dominated the carnivore biomass in all regions of the Channel; thereafter, S. elegans was more abundant. Reproduction of the ctenophore occurred from April to September, with juveniles reaching maximum abundance in June at 12 individuals m-3. The estimated food demand of the population in May for the outer region of the Channel was approximately 31% of the daily production of copepods. When the population reached its peak abundance in June, the estimated food requirement outstripped the daily production of copepods and a decline in both the prey and predator standing stocks was observed. Similar estimations were derived for the inner region of the Channel. S. elegans increased from a standing stock of 0.038 mg C m-3 in March to 6.35 mg C m-3 in September. Estimates of the copepod production compared with the derived demand of the chaetognath population showed that the decline in the copepods in the late summer was the result of feeding by this predator. The holoplankton carnivore population was approximately 66% of the copepod standing stock for the 10 mo period November 1973 to September 1974 in the outer region of the Channel and 45% of that in the inner region. The carnivores formed the greater part of the total holoplankton biomass from September through the winter months to February, suggesting a predator-dominated community. 相似文献
Between 1978 and 1983, eggs from 15 species of Antarctic and Subantarctic seabirds were collected and analysed for organochlorine pesticides, PCBs, and mercury residues. The lowest levels of these chemicals were detected in the eggs of Adélie Penguins from Prydz Bay. Antarctica. On a wet weight basis, the mean concentrations in eggs of these penguins were 0.01 μg/g HCB, 0.005 μg/g DDE, less than 0.1 μg/g PCBs (1260) and 0.02 μg/g mercury. Such values indicate that the environmental levels of these contaminants in the biotypes of these species are extremely low, and present no significant threat.
The highest levels of contaminants were found in the eggs of species which breed in Antarctica and migrate to regions well north of the Antarctic Convergence in the non-breeding season. On a wet weight basis, Northern Giant-Petrel eggs contained 0.11 μg/g HCB, 0.95 μg/g DDE and 1.8 μg/g PCB (1260), and 1.8 μg/g mercury. There are indications that DDE levels are increasing for both Southern and Northern Giant-Petrels, and it is possible that reports of a decreasing number of breeding pairs of these species at several colonies are due to one or more of these contaminants reaching toxic levels.
Analysis of penguin tissues show that preen gland lipid is suitable for monitoring the body burden of organochlorine insecticides and PCBs in seabirds.
Variation in DDE and mercury residue levels for some of these species suggest that the biotypes in which they live are quite different, and that the Antarctic Convergence may have a major influence in protecting the Antarctic ecosystem from these pollutants. 相似文献
Inner phenomena, such as personal motivations for pursuing sustainability, may be critical levers for improving conservation outcomes. Most conservation research and policies, however, focus on external phenomena (e.g., ecological change or economic processes). We explored the factors shaping 9 conservation attitudes toward forest and wildlife protection among colonist farmers around an Amazonian deforestation frontier. Our data comprised 241 face-to-face quantitative surveys, complemented with qualitative insights from open-ended questionnaire responses and opportunistic semistructured interviews. To account for the full spectrum of possible inner motivations, we employed measures of nature connection (indicating biospheric motivation) and personal values organized around the traditionalism (traditionalist through to high openness to change) and universalism dimensions (egoistic through to altruistic motivations). We used averaged beta-binomial generalized linear models to assess the role of external factors (socioeconomic, sociodemographic, and environmental) and personal (inner) motivations on the variation in attitudes. Each attitude was modeled separately. The relative importance of each predictor was judged by the proportion of models where it appeared as significant. Proconservation views were expressed by the majority (at least 65%) of the respondents in 7 out of the 9 attitude models. The most consistent predictors were emotional nature connection and personal values (significant in 4–6 out of 9 models), rather than external phenomena (significant in 0–5 models). However, the poorest farmers had lower scores on the agreement with prioritizing nature over development (𝛽 = –0.52, 95% CI: –0.96 to –0.07). Qualitative data also indicated that economic barriers hinder forest conservation on farms. These results suggest that biospheric, traditionalistic, and altruistic motivations promote people's proconservation attitudes, but nurturing these latent motivations is unlikely to improve conservation outcomes if material poverty remains unaddressed. Integrating the inner–outer perspective into conservation thinking and practical interventions could foster environmental stewardship and increase human well-being. 相似文献
