ABSTRACT: We suggest that a diagnostic procedure, not unlike that followed in medical practice, provides a logical basis for stream channel assessment and monitoring. Our argument is based on the observation that a particular indicator or measurement of stream channel condition can mean different things depending upon the local geomorphic context and history of the channel in question. This paper offers a conceptual framework for diagnosing channel condition, evaluating channel response, and developing channel monitoring programs. The proposed diagnostic framework assesses reach‐level channel conditions as a function of location in the channel network, regional and local biogeomorphic context, controlling influences such as sediment supply and transport capacity, riparian vegetation, the supply of in‐channel flow obstructions, and disturbance history. Field assessments of key valley bottom and active channel characteristics are needed to formulate an accurate diagnosis of channel conditions. A similar approach and level of understanding is needed to design effective monitoring programs, as stream type and channel state greatly affect the type and magnitude of channel response to changes in discharge and sediment loads. General predictions are made for five channel types with respect to the response of various stream characteristics to an increase in coarse sediment inputs, fine sediment inputs, and the size and frequency of peak flows, respectively. These predictions provide general hypotheses and guidance for channel assessment and monitoring. However, the formulation of specific diagnostic criteria and monitoring protocols must be tailored to specific geographic areas because of the variability in the controls on channel condition within river basins and between regions. The diagnostic approach to channel assessment and monitoring requires a relatively high level of training and experience, but proper application should result in useful interpretation of channel conditions and response potential. 相似文献

Sediment and water samples were collected by submersible in September 1986 at 16 locations on the carbonate cap overlying a conical diapir, which was formed by the upward migration of oil and gas through a subsurface fault on the continental slope off Louisiana, USA (27°47N; 91°30.4W). The biological community at the site was photographed quantitatively with still and video cameras. Rigorous spatial sampling indices were maintained so that variation in chemical parameters and in the abundance of photographed organisms could be estimated within the bounds of the study site. Concentrations of extractable organic material (EOM) ranged from 0.24 to 119.26 in the sediment samples, while methane concentrations in the water samples were from 0.037 to 66.474 M. The visible biological community was predominantly composed of the chemosynthetic tube worms (Vestimentifera) Lamellibrachia sp. and Escarpia sp., and an undescribed, methane-oxidizing mussel (Mytilidae: Bathymodiolus-like), as well as diverse non-chemosynthetic organisms. The ranked abundance of tube worms was significantly correlated (p<0.05) with the concentration of EOM in the sediment samples, while the abundance of mussels was significantly correlated (p<0.05) with the concentration of methane in the water samples. Tube worms and mussels both occurred in dense clusters; however, the clusters of mussels had a more restricted distribution within the study site than did clusters of tube worms. A binary response estimation procedure using contingent valuation data is proposed for estimating the incremental environmental benefits associated with the use of constructed wetlands to control agricultural waste-water runoff. The model uses two binary responses per individual while circumventing the non-independence problems associated with follow-up valuation questions. ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the use of a modified pebble count procedure (Bevenger and King, 1995) to detect cumulative watershed effects on headwater streams in the Routt National Forest in northcentral Colorado. The 42 sample reaches were stratified by disturbance (reference or disturbed) and geologic terrene (granitic or mixed sedimentary-volcanic). Water surface slope was a significant control on the number of fine particles in the reference reaches in both terranes, and the data from the disturbed reaches were adjusted accordingly. The disturbed reaches in the granitic terrene generally had a higher percentage of fine particles, and the adjusted number of fine particles was significantly correlated with the number of road crossings. Disturbed reaches in the sedimentary-volcanic (s-v) terrane generally did not have significantly more fine particles, nor were the adjusted numbers of fine particles significantly correlated with any management index. The lack of significant trends in the s-v streams is probably due to differences in weathering between the two rock types, and the location of the sample reach relative to sedimentary outcrops. Two other procedures were also used to assess cumulative watershed effects, with the Pfankuch channel stability rating yielding stronger and more consistent differences between the reference and the disturbed streams than the Tarzwell substrate ratio. We conclude that it may be difficult to define a standard reference condition, and that the number of road crossings is more strongly correlated with the number of fine particles than equivalent clearcut area. 相似文献

The ability to sample in situ natural environmental processes has proven to be challenging when working with redox-sensitive contaminates in saturated sediments in wetland systems, especially within the rhizosphere, where sharp redox gradients are common. Many traditional approaches are invasive and disturb natural sediment chemistry. Through laboratory and field studies, the work presented in this study demonstrates a novel semipermanent dialysis sampler that allows for long-term, anaerobic monitoring of shallow sediments. Dialysis samplers were deployed and tested for over 1 year while being exposed to extremes in climate. These newly designed devices produce statistically reproducible data and capture sensitive redox trends. Results from the newly designed samplers were compared to conventional samplers. Initially, both the new and old designs yielded statistically similar data, but these data diverged over a period of months. The new devices are less invasive, so data gathered from these devices are more likely to be a closer representation of true conditions in the subsurface. By giving reliable data from a consistent location in space, these new samplers represent a significant step forward in capturing spatial and temporal variability in wetland redox chemistry during long-term monitoring. 相似文献

This article examines 20th Century hydrology in the Uinta Mountains region in the context of the previous four to eight centuries as well as possible relationships with Pacific and Atlantic Ocean variability using new tree-ring based reconstructions for streamflow and snowpack. The 20th Century appears to have been unusually wet compared with previous centuries. Relationships between hydrology in the region and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) are largely insignificant in instrumental datasets but may have been stronger, although inconsistent, over the longer time spans represented by the paleoclimate records. Impacts of individual modes of sea surface temperature variability may sometimes be enhanced by periods when climate forcing by ENSO, PDO, and/or AMO coincide. Such episodes are associated with deviations from mean hydrology as high as +14% and as low as −18%. The 20th Century could be a misleading benchmark to base water resource estimates upon and flexible water management strategies are necessary to take into account the large range of natural variability observed in the longer-term hydroclimatology as well as the challenges to predictability due to the apparently complex and inconsistent influence of ocean-driven variability. 相似文献

The South Saskatchewan River Basin is one of Canada's most threatened watersheds, with water supplies in most subbasins over‐allocated. In 2013, stakeholders representing irrigation districts, the environment, and municipalities collaborated with researchers and consultants to explore opportunities to improve the resiliency of the management of the Oldman and South Saskatchewan River subbasins. Streamflow scenarios for 2025‐2054 were constructed by the novel approach of regressing historical river flows against indices of large‐scale ocean‐atmosphere climate oscillations to derive statistical streamflow models, which were then run using projected climate indices from global climate models. The impacts of some of the most extreme scenarios were simulated using the hydrologic mass‐balance model Operational Analysis and Simulation of Integrated Systems (OASIS). Based on stakeholder observations, the project participants proposed and evaluated potential risk management and adaption strategies, e.g., modifying existing infrastructure, building new infrastructure, changing operations to supplement environmental flows, reducing demand, and sharing supply. The OASIS model was applied interactively at live modeling sessions with stakeholders to explore practical adaptation strategies. Our results, which serve as recommendations for policy makers, showed that forecast‐based rationing together with new expanded storage could dramatically reduce water shortages. 相似文献
