Background, Aims and Scope Pollution by heavy metals over large areas and long periods of time may cause chronic damage to living organisms and must be carefully controlled. One way to determine the extent of environmental contamination is by measuring the levels of contaminants in plants. The use of mosses as biomonitors is a convenient method to determine levels of (atmospheric) deposition, as terrestrial mosses obtain most of their supply of mineral elements from precipitation and dry deposition of airborne particles. Mosses have therefore received increasing attention as a suitable tool for monitoring regional patterns of elemental deposition from the atmosphere in large-scale studies in various countries, in areas close to industrial installations as well as in areas not expected to be contaminated. Although this technique is widely known, ecological studies of this type have rarely been done in Portugal. The aim of this paper is to evaluate and compare the spatial distribution of heavy metals in Hypnum cupressiforme, Pleurozium schreberi, Dicranum scoparium and Polytrichum piliferum collected from the Serra da Estrela natural park in Portugal and in the Veluwezoom natural park in the Netherlands. The selected species are the most widely used bryophytes for biomonitoring in the boreal region. The popularity of these species for this purpose is due to their wide ecological amplitude and distribution.Methods At 54 sampling sites in both nature parks, samples of Hypnum cupressiforme, Pleurozium schreberi, Dicranum scoparium and Polytrichum piliferum were collected. Plant digests were analysed for Al, Ba, Ca, Cr, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Ni, Sr, V, Zn, Pb, Cu, Cd, N and P. Differentiations between sampling sites in terms of concentrations of elements in mosses were evaluated by ANOVA and the least significant difference was calculated. The normality of the analysed features was checked with the chi square test. After standardization, the matrix of 54 samples and 10 heavy metals was subjected to numerical classification to detect groups of samples with similar patterns of metal concentrations. The clustering algorithm was prepared with Ward’s method, and the City Block Manhattan method was used for the similarity measure. Metals and samples were also subjected to ordination to reveal possible gradients of heavy metal levels, using PCA. Correlations were calculated between concentrations of metals and factors 1 and 2, allowing the dependence between the concentration of metals and factors (factor loading) to be estimated.Results and Discussion All species examined in both areas contained elevated levels of Mn and Pb. For each particular species, concentrations of N, P and Pb were significantly higher at Serra da Estrela, while concentrations of Cu were significantly higher at the Veluwezoom. Mosses from Portugal and the Netherlands differed significantly mainly in the concentrations of Al, Ba, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and V. This differentiation did not exceed that within the mosses from Portugal.Conclusions Mosses from Portugal and the Netherlands differ significantly mainly in the concentrations of Al, Ba, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and V. This differentiation does not exceed the differentiation within the mosses from Portugal.Recommendation and Outlook Further research is required into the origin and deposition of the polluting elements in other environmental compartments.  相似文献

During the autumn of 1997 and 1998, leaf litter processing rates and leaf pack invertebrate assemblages were examined at eight stations along a pollution gradient in Goosefare Brook, a first-order coastal plain stream in southern Maine (USA). There was no significant effect on litter softening rate in 1997, and only the most polluted station showed a decrease in 1998. However, litter loss rates showed decreases in both years. The structure of invertebrate assemblages changed in response to the stresses, showing a decline in EPT richness and an increase in the proportion of collecting taxa. However, total shredder biomass was only weakly affected. Shredder biomass at all stations was dominated by Tipula, and biomass of other shredder taxa showed a serial replacement along the gradient of stress related to their pollution tolerance. Rather than the expected relationship with shredder biomass, litter processing rates were directly related to water and sediment quality. Goosefare Brook demonstrates how variable pollution tolerance of community members enables stress resistance and a consequent preservation of ecosystem function.  相似文献

The bioeconomic analysis of endangered species without consumptive values can be problematic when analysed with density-dependent models that assume a fixed environment size. Most bioeconomic models use harvest as a control variable, yet when modelling non-harvestable species, frequently the only variable under control of conservationists is the quantity of habitat to be made available. The authors explore the implications of this in a model developed to analyse the potential population recovery of New Zealand’s yellow-eyed penguin. The penguin faces severe competition with man for the terrestrial resources required for breeding and has declined in population to perilously low levels. The model was developed to estimate the land use required for recovery and preservation of the species and to compare the results to current tourism-driven conservation efforts. It is demonstrated that land may serve as a useful control variable in bioeconomic models and that such a model may be useful for determining whether sufficient incentives exist to preserve a species. However, the model may generate less useful results for providing a specific estimate of the optimal allocation of land to such a species.  相似文献

Ecologists frequently note the importance of modelling entire ecosystems rather than individual species, but most bioeconomic models in the current literature focus on a single species. While the mathematical difficulty of modelling multiple species may be substantial, it is important to recognise the implications of the single-species assumption to a model’s results. In this paper, the authors address the economic significance of this assumption through the development of an analytical multiple-species model and demonstrate the importance of ecological interrelationships and economic values to the survival of endangered species.  相似文献

Hanford tanks contain more than 60 million gallons of high-level wastes produced by decades of extracting plutonium from irradiated uranium fuel. The wastes were concentrated to a thick slurry consistency by evaporation prior to storage to minimize space. The resulting concentrated waste properties introduced unanticipated, detrimental conditions affecting workers' and the public's health and safety and involving the release of potentially flammable gases. The released gases consist primarily of hydrogen, nitrous oxide, and ammonia. Dilution and sluicing were initially proposed to mitigate the flammable gas safety conditions. As a result of evaluations, the mechanisms and conditions that are thought to control the accumulation and spontaneous release of flammable gases were identified and confirmed. The technical rationale was established for developing operational approaches to mitigate the periodic generation of flammable gases in existing tanks and to avoid any reoccurrence of this serious safety problem during future waste management activities. The chemistry of the two highest risk tanks was examined to test the potential for reversing the conditions causing gas buildup and the consequences of sluicing without appropriate chemical conditioning. The identified mechanisms apply equally to the remaining flammable gas tanks at Hanford as well as to other waste tanks in the DOE complex, particularly those at Savannah River. Passive means of mitigating the flammable gas condition require less than 1:1 dilution, and sluicing wastes from tank 106-C can be accomplished without creating a flammable gas condition. Carbonate equilibria reactions and their effect on aluminum speciation are largely overlooked and provided the key for explaining the episodic release of flammable gases from tank wastes. The reaction of atmospheric carbon dioxide with a sodium hydroxide-rich waste solution produces carbonate precipitates. More importantly, this reaction lowers the pH of the waste and precipitates aluminum hydroxide as a gel. The wastes contain substantial amounts of complexing agents such as ethylene diamine tetraacidicacid (EDTA), hydroxy ethylene diamine triacidic acid (HEDTA), and their degradation products. These complexing agents stabilize the aluminum hydroxide gel together with chromium, manganese and iron hydroxides, and oxybydroxides under the resulting pH conditions. These complex species may coprecipitate and accumulate as a metastable layer in the middle and lower levels of th tank. The complexed aluminum hydroxide acts as a binding agent trapping other particulates in a microcrystalline mat. Microcrystalline particles such as sodium nitrite provide the structural strength for the mat. Once the gas accumulation below the gel layer achieves a critical buoyancy sufficient to rupture the microcrystalline mat, a gas release event occurs. The cycle of gas buildup and release continues each time the buoyancy of the trapped gas exceeds the hydrostatic pressure and the gels' plasticity modulus. Stokes Law predicts a particle settling rate in the tank of less than 50 days, well within the bistorical periodicity of GREs. Laboratory tests, forming the basis of a recent patent application, verify that large quantities of complexed aluminum hydroxide gel are produced by passing carbon dioxide through simulated waste solutions (Hobl, 1993) equivalent to those found in tank 101-SY. It was confirmed that a simple adjustment of pH witll redissolve the gel, thereby reducing viscosity and safely facilitating continuous flammable gas release. Additional experiments were undertaken to provide a basis for understanding the role of complexed aluminum hydroxides in the CO2/NaOH/Al(OH)3 (complexing agents)/NaAlO2 system. This article examines a plausible mechanism for the periodic release of flammable gas and considerations for: (1) remediating existing flammable gas tanks through a combination of chemical treatment and mixer pumps; (2) diluting, combining, retrieving, and storing wastes; (3) preventing clogging of transfer lines; (4) sludge and soil washing; and (5) cribs, ponds, basins, and ground-water cleanup. This study provides a singificant breakthrough for tank waste management by explaining key mechanisms controlling episodic release of flammable gases. The breakthrough provides the bases for removing the tanks classified as flammable gas from the wathclist and has broad operational applications with a potential for billions of dollars in cost savings.  相似文献
