Protected areas are the core of efforts to conserve biological diversity and zoning uses, and they are used as a tool for
their management. Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) have been used to evaluate conflicts
between approved uses and actual uses in La Restinga Lagoon National Park in Venezuela (LRLNP). The park (188.6 km2), covers various ecosystems such as coastal lagoons, marine waters and xerophytic vegetation, it is visited by up to 260,000
people visit per year. A GIS, using a base map compiled from 1:25,000 maps was developed. Natural cover was mapped from LANDSAT
VII TM images, orthophotomaps and aerial photographs. Spatial use data was collected by field GPS location of any use inside
the park during 2 years. Thematic vector maps for each land cover, zoning area, and observed use were created. Maps of zoning
and uses were overlapped and new maps for each use-zoning crossing were created. The park contain nine different zoning areas
wherein 28 different uses were identified, 18 of them were direct consumptive and non-consumptive uses, occurring on 54% of
the park. Tourism transit areas were the most used zones. More than 5,000 people use the park during a high season day. Superimposition
of zoning maps with actual use data produced 13 uses taking place in not allowed areas (46% of park area). Most common prohibited
use was commercial net fishing, occurring in nearly 40% of the park area. Therefore, identifying human use conflicts and its
geographical distribution is a key issue to improve Management Plans as well as identifying hot sites. The GPS-GIS methodology
presented here allows Park Rangers to select those areas which could benefit from enhanced supervision with the limited budget

The subject of the study was the ecological and human health consequences of environmental pollution from emissions arising
from burning local coal with an arsenic content ranging from 900 to 1,500 g/tonne of dry substance. The first indication of
environmental pollution by arsenic-containing emissions was the mass extinction of honeybee colonies. The neurotoxic and carcinogenic
aspects of arsenic exposure were followed. On using a group diagnostics approach, significant hearing losses were detected
in exposed children in both air and bone conduction audiometry at high frequency range (4,000 and 8,000 Hz, respectively).
Exposure assessment of the local population of the Prievidza district, Central Slovakia, was based on biological monitoring.
The criterion of higher exposure was arsenic content in hair exceeding concentrations of 3 μg/g of hair. In a 7.5-km radius
of the exposed region, live about two-tenths of the district population who were considered as “exposed” and rest of the district
served as the “reference” population. The subject of our analysis was a database of 1,503 non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC)
cases (756 in men and 747 in women) collected from 1977 to 1996 in the Prievidza district, Central Slovakia (population ~125,000).
The age standardized incidence of NMSC (each confirmed by histological examination) in non-occupational settings ranged from
45.9 to 93.9 in men and from 34.6 to 81.4 in women. Analysis of our data demonstrates a positive correlation between human
cumulative exposure to arsenic and incidence of NMSC. 相似文献

Multiple traits may either signal different characteristics of a male or be redundant. These multiple signals may convey different
messages if they are intended for different receivers (e.g., male or females) that have different interests. We examined the
functions of multiple colorful visual traits of male Schreiber’s green lizard (Lacerta schreiberi). Results showed that interindividual variation in the characteristics of coloration of males can be related to variation
in morphology, health state, dominance status, and pairing status, but that different relationships were found for each color
signal. For example, dominant males had brighter “blue” throat and with higher values of ultraviolet (UV) and bluish coloration
and darker and greenish dorsal coloration than subordinate males. Health state was also reflected in coloration; males with
a higher immune response had “blue” throats with lower amounts of UV coloration, but had “yellow” chests with higher amounts
of UV coloration. Males found guarding females also differed in coloration from males found alone. These data suggest that
characteristics of coloration of the different multiple signals may reveal different messages for different receivers, either
male or female conspecifics. The development of the different signals, based on different morphological and physiological
mechanisms and trade-offs, may allow signal reliability of multiple colorful traits in different social contexts. 相似文献

Heavy metal speciation and phytotoxic effects of three representative sewage sludges for agricultural uses 总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
The environmental impact of sewage sludges depends on the availability and phytotoxicity of their heavy metal. The influence of representative sludges (dewatered anaerobic, pelletization, and composted sludge) on the availability of heavy metals, and their effects on seed germination were compared. The total heavy metal concentrations were below the maximum permitted for land-applied waste and the differences among them were small. The DTPA-extracted metal concentrations were rather different. The sequential extraction of the compost showed a slight increase in Cd and Cu availability, and a decrease in the availability of Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn. Pelletization increased the availability of Ni and slightly reduced that of Cr. The dewatering sludge led to greater availability of Cr and Mn but reduced the concentration of Cd. The three different sludges also affected seed germination and root elongation in different ways. The most serious adverse effects were caused by the dewatered sludge extract. 相似文献

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans and 'dioxin-like' PCBs in flue gas emissions from municipal waste management plants 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The aim of this work is to give representative data on polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) from stack gas emissions of an urban solid waste management plant which has to comply with the limit of 0.1 ng I-TEQ/Nm3. In particular, the study is focused on 29 target compounds, the seventeen 2,3,7,8-PCDDs/Fs, four non-ortho PCBs and eight mono-ortho PCBs which configure so-called 'dioxin-like' PCBs (DL-PCBs). To this end, emission measurements were performed during one year over the three operating combustion lines in a selected waste management plant. In general, accurate methodology allowed characterizing all target compounds in almost all the samples analyzed. In addition, a typical pattern for DL-PCBs is reported. The pattern presented PCB #118 to be the highest, nevertheless the figures demonstrated DL-PCBs contribution to the total TEQ around 3% being PCB #126 the most important congener due to its TEF of 0.1. Finally, remarkable differences were achieved in comparison with both environmental and biological samples such as soils, sediments, human milk or fish since these matrices may present DL-PCB contribution to the total TEQ up to 77%. 相似文献

Nicotiana glauca transformed with TaPCS1 was tested for its application in phytoremediation. When plantlets were grown in mine soils containing Cu, Zn, and Pb (42, 2600, and 1500 mg kg(-1)) the plant showed high levels of accumulation especially of Zn and Pb. Adult plants growing in mine soils containing different heavy metal concentrations showed a greater accumulation as well as an extension to a wider range of elements, including Cd, Ni and B. The overexpressed gene confers up to 9 and 36 times more Cd and Pb accumulation in the shoots under hydroponic conditions, and a 3- and 6-fold increase in mining soils. When the hyperaccumulator Thlaspi caerulescens was compared, the results were higher values of heavy metal and Boron accumulation, with a yield of 100 times more biomass. Thlaspi was unable to survive in mining soils containing either a level higher than 11000 mg kg(-1) of Pb and 4500 mg kg(-1) of Zn, while engineered plants yielded an average of 0.5 kg per plant. 相似文献

A risk map of the chemical/petrochemical industrial area of Tarragona (Catalonia, Spain) was designed following a two-stage procedure. The first step was the creation of a ranking system (Hazard Index) for a number of different inorganic and organic pollutants: heavy metals, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polychlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by applying self-organizing maps (SOM) to persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity properties of the chemicals. PCBs seemed to be the most hazardous compounds, while the light PAHs showed the minimum values. Subsequently, an Integral Risk Index was developed taking into account the Hazard Index and the concentrations of all pollutants in soil samples collected in the assessed area of Tarragona. Finally, a risk map was elaborated by representing the spatial distribution of the Integral Risk Index with a geographic information system (GIS). The results of the present study seem to indicate that the development of an integral risk map might be useful to help in making-decision processes concerning environmental pollutants. 相似文献

Levels of 137Cs in total atmospheric deposition have been measured in the Cienfuegos region (Cuba) between 1994 and 2002. Samples were collected every three months, evaporated to dryness to obtain residual samples, and measured by gamma spectrometry. The 137Cs mean concentration in total deposition was 0.24 Bq m(-2) and data ranged between < 0.05 and 0.62 Bq m(-2). Precipitation rates and raintime have proved to be the most important factors controlling the concentration and depositional flux of 137Cs in the atmosphere over Cienfuegos, showing a high correlation coefficient (R = 0.93). 相似文献

The World Year of Physics (2005) is an international celebration to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Einstein’s “Annus
Mirabilis.” The United Nations has officially declared 2005 as the International Year of Physics. However, the impact of Einstein’s
ideas was not restricted to physics. Among numerous other disciplines, Einstein also made significant and specific contributions
to Earth Sciences. His geosciences-related letters, comments, and scientific articles are dispersed, not easily accessible,
and are poorly known. The present review attempts to integrate them as a tribute to Einstein in commemoration of this centenary.
These contributions can be classified into three basic areas: geodynamics, geological (planetary) catastrophism, and fluvial
geomorphology. Regarding geodynamics, Einstein essentially supported Hapgood’s very controversial theory called Earth Crust
Displacement. With respect to geological (planetary) catastrophism, it is shown how the ideas of Einstein about Velikovsky’s
proposals evolved from 1946 to 1955. Finally, in relation to fluvial geodynamics, the review incorporates the elegant work
in which Einstein explains the formation of meandering rivers. A general analysis of his contributions is also carried out
from today’s perspective. Given the interdisciplinarity and implications of Einstein’s achievements to multiple fields of
knowledge, we propose that the year 2005 serve, rather than to confine his universal figure within a specific scientific area,
to broaden it for a better appreciation of this brilliant scientist in all of his dimensions. 相似文献

Studies of antiparasite defences against cuckoo parasites have largely neglected the possibility that behavioural components of host defence may correlate giving rise to a behavioural syndrome. Furthermore, the different contribution of the host’s sex in nest defence has traditionally been disregarded. Here, we studied magpie (Pica pica) mobbing behaviour towards dummies of great spotted cuckoo (Clamator glandarius) and non-harmful hoopoes (Upupa epops) and egg rejection of parasite eggs in a population of colour-banded magpies. We predicted a positive correlation between the intensity of nest defence and egg rejection within each sex and that females respond more intensely than males to the threat of brood parasitism as they undertake incubation. Magpie males, but not females, defended their nests more intensely in those nests in which cuckoo model eggs were rejected. Individual magpies did significantly differ in their baseline level of nest attentiveness; however, there were no individual differences once pair identity was considered. Males and females defended their nests more intensely when it was exposed to the presence of a great spotted cuckoo dummy. Males, but not females, were more prone to appear at their nests, and females, but not males, were more prone to defend more intensely when their nests were challenged by a parasite threat. Our results thus agree with the view that mobbing behaviour and egg rejection in magpies may actually constitute a pseudosyndrome and highlight the necessity to integrate interindividual variation and the sex of the host in studies of the evolution of host defences. 相似文献
