Snow cover in Spanish mountains is crucial for ensuring water availability in spring and summer months, for the success of winter tourism or for the maintenance of biodiversity in mountain ecosystems. A changing climate may affect the volume of snow cover even in high mountains, where weather conditions are usually favorable for snow accumulation. In this paper, we aim to investigate the evolution (1970–2007) of combined precipitation–temperature modes in the Spanish mountains, and the sensitivity of the snowpack to their occurrence. The climatic database “Spain02” and snow thickness data for Spanish mountains were used for this purpose. Results showed that the frequency of dry-warm and wet-warm days has increased over time in all mountain ranges, while the frequency of the “cold” modes has decreased. The thickness of the snowpack in the Pyrenees has also decreased and its evolution is negatively correlated with the frequency of dry-warm days, and positively correlated with the frequency of dry-cold and wet-cold days. This work constitutes the first approach that relates the evolution of climatic conditions favorable or unfavorable for snow accumulation and the evolution of the snowpack in Spanish mountains. 相似文献

Marine fisheries in coastal ecosystems in many areas of the world have historically removed large-bodied individuals, potentially impairing ecosystem functioning and the long-term sustainability of fish populations. Reporting on size-based indicators that link to food-web structure can contribute to ecosystem-based management, but the application of these indicators over large (cross-ecosystem) geographical scales has been limited to either fisheries-dependent catch data or diver-based methods restricted to shallow waters (<20 m) that can misrepresent the abundance of large-bodied fished species. We obtained data on the body-size structure of 82 recreationally or commercially targeted marine demersal teleosts from 2904 deployments of baited remote underwater stereo-video (stereo-BRUV). Sampling was at up to 50 m depth and covered approximately 10,000 km of the continental shelf of Australia. Seascape relief, water depth, and human gravity (i.e., a proxy of human impacts) were the strongest predictors of the probability of occurrence of large fishes and the abundance of fishes above the minimum legal size of capture. No-take marine reserves had a positive effect on the abundance of fishes above legal size, although the effect varied across species groups. In contrast, sublegal fishes were best predicted by gradients in sea surface temperature (mean and variance). In areas of low human impact, large fishes were about three times more likely to be encountered and fishes of legal size were approximately five times more abundant. For conspicuous species groups with contrasting habitat, environmental, and biogeographic affinities, abundance of legal-size fishes typically declined as human impact increased. Our large-scale quantitative analyses highlight the combined importance of seascape complexity, regions with low human footprint, and no-take marine reserves in protecting large-bodied fishes across a broad range of species and ecosystem configurations. 相似文献

We have investigated the regulation of thyroidal status and osmoregulatory capacities in juveniles from the teleost Solea senegalensis acclimated to different ambient temperatures. Juveniles, raised in seawater at 19°C, were acclimated for 3 weeks to temperatures
of 12, 19 and 26°C. Since our preliminary observations showed that at 12°C feed intake was suppressed, our experimental design
controlled for this factor. The concentration of branchial Na+,K+-ATPase, estimated by measurements of enzyme activity at the optimum temperature of this enzyme (37°C), did not change. In
contrast, an increase in Na+,K+-ATPase activity (measured at 37°C), was observed in the kidney of 12°C-acclimated fish. In fish acclimated to 12°C, the hepatosomatic
index had increased, which correlated with increased plasma levels of triglycerides and non-esterified fatty acids. Plasma
cortisol levels did not differ significantly between the experimental groups. In liver and gills, the amount of iodothyronine
deiodinases that exhibit thyroid hormone outer ring deiodination was up-regulated only when fish did not feed. When assayed
at the acclimation temperature, kidney deiodinase activities were similar, indicating a temperature-compensation strategy.
3,5,3′-triiodothyronine (T3) tissue concentrations in gills and kidney did not differ significantly between experimental groups.
However, at 12°C, lower T3 tissue levels were measured in plasma and liver. We conclude that S. senegalensis adjusts its osmoregulatory system to compensate for the effects of temperature on electrolyte transport capacity. The organ-specific
changes in thyroid hormone metabolism at different temperatures indicate the involvement of thyroid hormones in temperature
acclimation. 相似文献

The overtopping of port breakwaters may affect the assets located at the breakwater lee side. If adaptation measures are not taken, the sea level rise will increase the overtopping discharges putting those assets at significant risk. This study compares, at a regional scale, overtopping discharges over port breakwaters for three storm conditions (return periods of 1, 5 and 50 years) under present climate as well as for three scenarios of sea level rise based on recent projections. The results indicate that, for the worst storm and sea level rise conditions, the overtopping discharge would not be negligible (larger than 1 l/s/m) in 35 ports (84 %), in contrast to only 18 ports (42 %) being affected under present conditions. In addition, in 28 ports (65 %) the overtopping would be at least one order of magnitude larger than for present conditions. In the case of large storms, in 2 ports the overtopping discharge exceeds 200 l/s/m (the discharge that can initiate breakwater damage) under present conditions, while in the worst scenario of sea level rise the number of ports exceeding this value would be 7. On the other hand, the vulnerability of each port for which overtopping flow is greater than an acceptable discharge flux is assessed, and regional maps of vulnerability are plotted. For the worst storm conditions, 23 % of the Catalan ports have risks associated with overtopping under present climate conditions. This percentage would increase to 47 % in the worst sea level rise scenario. 相似文献

Successful applications of different analytical procedures to determine quantitatively endosulfan and its metabolites in aqueous media can be found in recent literature. Fundamentally, they have made use of solid-phase extraction (SPE) and gas (GC) or liquid chromatography (LC), sometimes coupled to mass spectrometry (MS). In this paper, a new and alternative methodology to determine quantitatively endosulfan in aqueous media is reported. A C18-modified carbon-paste electrode has been used to determine voltammetrically endosulfan, despite its unfavourable electrochemical properties and behaviour. The methodology proposed is based on the decrease experienced by the peak intensity corresponding to voltammetric signals of Cu(II) when successive and constant additions of endosulfan are carried out. This decrease is directly proportional to the concentration of endosulfan what allows to perform an indirect quantification of the pesticide. The detection limit obtained is 40 ng l−1, this value being under the limits specified by European norms and EPA reports. 相似文献

In this paper, we examine metal concentrations in the water and in the crustacean Balanus balanoides from the Huelva estuary, one of the most polluted estuaries in Europe. Metal levels in waters are very high, especially those of Zn, Fe and Cu. Zn presents the highest concentrations, with a mean value of 690 microg l-1 in 2001 and 301 microg l-1 in 2002. As the water flows down through the estuary toward the sea, the metal concentrations drop sharply and the pH rises. The metal concentrations in balanoides tissues are, in general, very high, undoubtedly due to the high metal pollution of the water where it lives. Metal concentrations in Balanus balanoides tissues behave similarly to those in the water, reaching maximums in the upper part of the estuary and diminishing as we approach the sea. The element that reaches the highest levels in Balanus balanoides is Zn, with a mean value of 54.6 g kg-1 in 2001 and 29.9 g kg-1 in 2002, followed by Cu and Fe. There is a significant correlation (p<0.01) for concentrations of Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn in Balanus balanoides relative to their concentration in waters. Barnacles showed a great capacity to accumulate metals, especially Zn, Cu and Fe. Based on the results obtained, we can conclude that Balanus balanoides is a good tool for monitoring trace metals in the Huelva estuary. 相似文献

Trace metals were determined in the two most abundant species of bivalve molluscs along the Atlantic coast of southern Spain (Donax trunculus and Chamelea gallina) and in the sediments where they live. The results show that the area near the mouth of the Huelva estuary is where the highest metal concentrations are found in sediments and in the two bivalve species. This is not surprising, considering that the Huelva estuary is the mouth of the Tinto and Odiel rivers, which have one of the highest levels of metal pollution of all the rivers of Europe. The two species of bivalves have different amounts of metals in their tissues. The concentrations of Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, As and Hg in D. trunculus were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than in C. gallina; however, C. gallina contained more Ni and Cd. In both species the most abundant elements were Cu and Zn, while Hg showed the lowest values. There is a significant correlation (p < 0.05) for concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn and Hg in D. trunculus and C. gallina relative to their concentrations in surface sediments. 相似文献

Protected areas cannot be considered as elements isolated from the human groups that inhabit them. Consideration of the social factor is fundamental to guarantee the success of any management model. In this sense, analyzing the perception of people who live in protected areas can be a key tool for the formulation of proposals for improving the existing models. This article explores perceptions of local residents in the Sierra Nevada Protected Area in Southern Spain and identifies the socio-demographic factors that affect these perceptions. The main objective is to generate relevant data for the protected area management team. The recommendations we can offer entail a review of the communication plan and participatory strategy considering social differences in perceptions of the local population. 相似文献
