Chitosan membranes as sorbents for trace elements determination in surface waters

Purpose  

Chitosan membranes (non-crosslinked, crosslinked, and modified with l-cysteine) were evaluated as sorbents prior to electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) determination of total dissolved metal content in surface water samples.     

Structural isomers of polyfluorinated di- and tri-alkylated phosphate ester surfactants present in industrial blends and in microwave popcorn bags

Introduction  

In this study, we provide strategies for detecting and quantifying the structural isomers of polyfluorinated di- and tri-alkyl surfactants (PFAS) by mass spectrometry (MS). We specifically investigate polyfluorinated dialkylated phosphate ester surfactants (x:2/y:2 diPAPS, (F(CF₂) _x CH₂CH₂O-P(O)(O)⁻-OCH₂CH₂(CF₂) _y F)) and their thioether analogues (x:2/y:2 S-diPAPS, F(CF₂) _x CH₂CH₂SCH₂-C[CH₂O)₂P(O)(O)⁻]-CH₂SCH₂CH₂(CF₂) _y F), which are used for industrial applications, such as oil- and water-repellent coatings on paper and board. DiPAPS have been found in human blood and are metabolised to the persistent perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCA) in rats.     

Accumulation,biotransformation, and biochemical responses after exposure to arsenite and arsenate in the estuarine polychaete <Emphasis Type="BoldItalic">Laeonereis acuta</Emphasis> (Nereididae)

Introduction  

This study aimed to analyze antioxidant responses and oxidative damage induced by two inorganic forms of arsenic (As; As^III and As^V) in an estuarine polychaete species, Laeonereis acuta (Nereididae). The capacity of arsenic biotransformation was also evaluated through the methylation process considering the activity of a key enzyme involved in the metabolization process.     

Application of an indicator based on taxonomic relatedness of ciliated protozoan assemblages for marine environmental assessment

Introduction  

Ciliated protozoa play important roles in aquatic ecosystems especially regarding their functions in micro-food web and have many advantages in environmental assessment compared with most other eukaryotic organisms. The aims of this study were focused on analyzing the application of an indicator based on taxonomic relatedness of ciliated protozoan assemblages for marine environmental assessment.     

Response of denitrification genes <Emphasis Type="Italic">nirS</Emphasis>, <Emphasis Type="Italic">nirK</Emphasis>, and <Emphasis Type="Italic">nosZ</Emphasis> to irrigation water quality in a Chinese agricultural soil

Purpose  

Denitrification is an important biochemical process in global nitrogen cycle, with a potent greenhouse gas product N₂O. Wastewater irrigation can result in the changes of soil properties and microbial communities of agricultural soils. The purpose of this study was to examine how the soil denitrification genes responded to different irrigation regimes.     

Combined inverse modeling approach and load duration curve method for variable nitrogen total maximum daily load development in an agricultural watershed

Purpose  

Nonpoint sources (NPS) pollution has been an important cause for water quality impairment worldwide. To take the temporal variations of both NPS pollution and in-stream attenuation into consideration, an inverse modeling approach and the load duration curve (LDC) method were combined for variable nutrient total maximum daily load (TMDL) development.     

Statistical analysis and isotherm study of uranium biosorption by <Emphasis Type="Italic">Padina</Emphasis> sp. algae biomass

The application of response surface methodology is presented for optimizing the removal of U ions from aqueous solutions using Padina sp., a brown marine algal biomass.     

Spectrofluorimetric study of the ageing of mixtions used in the gildings of mediaeval wall paintings

Introduction  

In the Middle Ages, we could find gildings on mural paintings. Gold, silver or tin leaves were applied according to distemper or mixtion technique. For the first one, a binder as glue is necessary, and for the second, a lipidic binder is used to stick the metallic leaf. Studies of gildings materials characterization show that the mixtion technique, with a mordant, is the most common. Linseed oil seems to be the binder used. It is always mixed with a siccative agent as lead. Because of bad conditions of conservation, the gildings do not resist anymore, only remain traces of metal or the adhesive under-layer. Thanks to the binder fluorescence, we can nowadays detect ancient gildings.     

Polyfluorinated surfactants (PFS) in paper and board coatings for food packaging

Introduction  

In this study, we explore the identity of a range of polyfluorinated surfactants (PFS) used for food contact materials, primarily to impart oil and water repellency on paper and board. PFS are of interest, as they can be precursors of poly- and perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), of which several are persistent and are found worldwide in human blood and in the environment.     

Sustainable development of deep-water seaport: the case of Lithuania

Introduction  

In 2003, the Japan International Cooperation Agency carried out a development feasibility study of Klaipeda Seaport (Lithuania). The focus in this study was the evaluation of environmental impacts of the port expansion because it is located in an ecologically sensitive area. While the Japanese researchers focused on the environmental impact analysis, they did not provide unambiguous conclusions. The problems remained unresolved and required further, more detailed consideration and deeper analysis.
