The urban solid waste of the city of Indaiatuba (pop. 175 000), located in the state of S?o Paulo, was characterized, focusing on the recycling potential. For this purpose, collected waste was subdivided into 27 items, classified by mass and volume. About 90% of this waste was found to be potentially recyclable and only 10% requiring landfilling. The compostable organic matter, in the form of food and garden waste, both with high moisture content (51 and 41%, respectively), represents 54% in mass and 21% in volume. The most common type of plastic in this waste is high density polyethylene, whose estimated disposal is about 5000kgday(-1). A socio-economic analysis of the waste generation indicates that low-income neighbourhoods discard relatively less packaging and more food waste, shoes and construction debris than middle and high income ones, which may be due to low purchasing power and schooling. Our findings indicate that more aluminium and uncoloured polyethylene terephthalate is discarded in the warmest months of the year, probably due to a greater consumption of canned and bottled drinks.  相似文献

A continuous method for the measurement of SO2 in ambient air at trace levels is described. The principle of detection is based on the anodic oxidation of SO2 in a galvanic cell. A differential measuring technique with a cell with two anodes and one cathode is used; background and noise current are low and stable. A feature of the measuring system is that the air sample is passed through a porous anode against a head of electrolyte on the other side of the anode. The minimum values for the time constant and the lower detection limit were 3 seconds and about 3µg/m3, respectively. The selectivity of the method was compared with those of other techniques in field testing. Trace concentrations measured by the galvanic method in the range from 12 to 135 µg/m3 were in good agreement with those of the flame photometric and the West-Gaeke method. With a Pt/Ni2B/graphite anode the mean oxidation efficiency was 94 ± 2% on the basis of 2 faraday/mol of SO2 within the tested concentration range of 50 to 560 µg/m3. During a field test no decrease in the anode activity was observed over a period of ten months. Examples are given for the galvanic detection of other compounds using porous measuring electrodes.  相似文献

A local strain of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense (ATCI01), which predominantly produces C2 toxin, was fed to the clams (Ruditapes philippinarum) under laboratory conditions. Concentrations of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) in the dosed clams were determined by High Performance Liquid Chromatographic (HPLC) analyses, and the clams were homogenized and then fed to the gastropods (Nassarius festivus). In the toxin accumulation phase, which lasted for 42 days, concentrations of PSTs increased in the snails gradually, reaching a maximum of 1.10 nmole g(-1) at the end of the exposure period. The toxin content of the homogenized clams (food) was 13.18 nmole g(-1), which was about 12-fold higher than the PST content in the snails. Between day 43 and day 82, the snails were fed with non-toxic clams, and this period represented the depuration phase. Accumulation and depuration rates of PSTs in the snails, N. festivus, were determined by fitting the experimental data to user-defined parameters program using a one-compartment model. Two different modeling approaches were used to derive the accumulation and depuration rates. The first approach is to derive both values from the data for the toxin uptake. The second approach is to derive depuration rate from the depuration data and then to derive uptake rate, allowing for toxin depuration, from the data for toxin uptake. The first approach yielded more consistent results for the toxin concentration at the end of the uptake period, when compared with the experimental data. The toxin uptake and depuration rates were 1.64 (pmole of toxin into snail per day) per (nmole g(-1) of toxin in food) and 0.06+/-0.02 day(-1) (mean+/-SE), respectively. The toxin profiles of snails were similar to the clams, but different from the algae. Besides C toxins (C1 and C2), dcGTX2 and dcGTX3 were also detected in both clams and snails. The beta:alpha epimer ratio gradually decreased during trophic transfer and approached a ratio of 1:3 (26.4 mol%:73.6 mol% at day 42) in the snails, near the end of the accumulation period.  相似文献

The soil metal contamination arising from the discharge of the high density of electroplating factories in the geographic center of Taiwan has prompted concern about human exposure to harmful metals. This study aimed to determine the levels of nickel (Ni) in urine of residents living in the high vs. low factory-density areas, and to examine how these levels relate to gender and age. A total of 660 subjects, resident in the area for the last five years, were sampled according to the stratified random sampling approach, at ages 35-44, 45-54, and 55-64years for both genders. Metals in urine samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). The geometric mean (95% confidence interval (CI)) of urinary Ni was 6.30 (5.99-6.62)mug/l. The 0.95 parametric reference interval (90% CI) of urinary Ni was estimated to be 1.74 (1.62-1.88) to 22.73 (21.14-24.44)mug/l. Subjects in the areas with a high density of electroplating factories had significantly higher urinary Ni levels than those in the low-density areas, but both types of areas had obviously higher urinary Ni levels when compared to the non-occupationally exposed population from western countries. The health significance of elevated urinary Ni and its causative factors remain to be determined.  相似文献

The impact of the air pollution ozone on soil N dynamics and temporal and spatial patterns of streamflow nitrate flux at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest Watershed 6 during the 1964-1994 period was assessed using aggregated (one-cell) and spatially explicit (208-cell) versions of the SImple NItrogen Cycle (SINIC) model. Simulated ozone effects included reductions in stomatal conductance and plant N demand. Model uncertainty was evaluated using Monte Carlo simulations. Ambient ozone was estimated to cause an additional 0.042 gN/m2 per year of nitrate export, 12% of the mean annual streamflow nitrate flux. The 95% credible interval of this estimate was 0.002-0.083 gN/m2 per year, or 0.72-27.3% of the annual flux. The large uncertainty in this estimate suggests that it may be difficult to identify ozone effects on nitrate export utilizing long term data from a single site.  相似文献

The characteristics of plant-mycorrhizae associations are known to vary in both time and space, but the ecological consequences of variation in the dynamics of plant-fungus interactions are poorly understood. For example, do plants associate with single fungi or multiple fungi simultaneously, and do the associations persist through a plant's lifetime or do plants support a succession of different fungi? We investigated these and other questions related to plant-fungus interactions in Goodyera pubescens, an evergreen terrestrial orchid of the eastern United States, that interacts with closely related fungi in the genus Tulasnella. Unlike the mycorrhizal associations of other plants, orchid-mycorrhizal associations only benefit the orchid, based on current evidence. Many terrestrial orchids have been found to associate with specific groups of fungi. This characteristic could potentially limit orchids to relatively narrow ranges of environmental conditions and may be a contributing factor in the decline of many orchids in the face of changing environmental conditions. We found that G. pubescens protocorms (developing embryos prior to leaf production) and adults associated with only one fungal individual at a time. The orchid-fungus association persists for years, but during a drought period that was associated with the death of many plants, surviving plants were able to switch to new fungal individuals. These results suggest that G. pubescens interacts with the same fungal partner during periods of modest environmental variation but is able to switch to a different fungal partner. We hypothesize that the ability to switch fungi allows G. pubescens to survive more extreme environmental perturbations. However, laboratory experiments suggest that switching fungi has potential costs, as it increases the risk of mortality, especially for smaller individuals. Our findings indicate that it is unlikely that switching fungi is a common way to improve tolerance of less severe environmental fluctuations and disturbances. These findings may have important implications for plant responses to severe climatic events or to more gradual environmental changes such as global warming.  相似文献
