The electrochemical oxidation of p-substituted phenols, with both electron donor (OH- and NH2-) and electron withdrawing groups (NO2-, COOH-, and halogens), on Pt anodes using sodium sulfate as support electrolyte has been studied. It was found that, except for p-halogen phenols, compounds with electron donor substituents are easier to remove and their initial rates of degradation are correlated to the octanol-water partitioning coefficient (log Poct) and the Hammett's constant. Degradation of all of our starting compounds produced the same intermediates, therefore, a general pathway of reaction is proposed. Additionally, the influence of pH, temperature, electrolyte concentration and current density on the initial and total degradation of p-chlorophenol was also investigated. 相似文献

The recent application of molecular tools to address associations between bacteria and marine invertebrates has provided access
to an immense diversity of unidentified microbes resistant to cultivation. However, the role of bacteria as partners in animal

and proliferation. In this work, we studied the reservoir of microbes associated with the excretory organs of Nautilus macromphalus as a model. Using the bacterial 16S RNA gene as a marker, we compared three complementary approaches for bacterial detection:
bacterial DNA extraction from N. macromphalus tissues (“molecular approach”), strain isolation to provide a bacterial culture collection (“microbiological approach”) and
finally, maintenance of N. macromphalus excretory organ cells with associated bacteria (“cellular approach”). Our results stress the potential of the “cellular approach”
as a promising new tool as it promotes the detection of as yet uncultured β-proteobacteria and spirochaetes associated with

Surface soils (0–15 cm) were sampled at 10–20 km intervals along two transects in Venezuela. One (1162 km, 70 samples) ran west to east parallel with the Caribbean coastline, the other (920 km, 92 samples) ran south to north from the frontier with Brazil to the Caribbean shore. Sampling took place in both a wet and a dry season. Trace metals were extracted from dried, sieved (<2 mm) soil with boiling aqua regia followed by analysis by ICP or flame AAS. Metal values did not differ significantly between the two seasons and dates were averaged. Geometric mean values for the west–east transect were: Cr=41.5, Cu 17.9, Cs 3.6, Li=13.9, Mn=294, Ni=21.3, Pb=17.4, Sr=39.4, V=60.4 and Zn = 83.7g g–1, respectively. Similarly, for the south–north transect Cr=21.3, Cu=4.3, Cs=1.1, Li=2.0, Mn=55.7, Ni=4.4, Pb=6.1, Sr=13.3, V=28.2 and Zn=16.7g g–1, respectively. A classification of samples by lithology showed surface soil composition to be related to rock composition. Metal values were low in the soils in the south of the country, in the Guyana highlands (Gran Sabana). Low Zn contents were prevalent. Lead contents were affected by roadside fallout from vehicles using leaded petrol except that high Pb contents of soils in the Gran Sabana were of more complex origin. 相似文献

Propulsion efficiency and cost of transport for copepods: a hydromechanical model of crustacean swimming 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
In the absence of direct measurement, costs of locomotion to small swimming Crustacea (<10 mm) have been derived exclusively through application of the fluid dynamic theory. Results indicate very low swimming costs, and contradict experimental data on larger Crustacea (15 to 100 mm) that suggest a three-fold increase in metabolic rate with increasing swimming speed. This paper introduces a swimming model that analyzes the hydrodynamic forces acting on a crustacean swimming at non-steady velocity. The model treats separately the hydrodynamic forces acting on the body and the swimming appendages, approximating the simultaneous solution of equations quantifying the drag and added-mass forces on each by stepwise integration. Input to the model is a time-series of instantaneous swimming-appendage velocities. The model output predicts a corresponding time-series of body velocities as well as the mechanical energy required to move the swimming appendages, dissipated kinetic energy, and metabolic cost of swimming. Swimming of the calanoid copepod Pleuromamma xiphias (Calanoida) was analyzed by extrapolating model parameters from data available in the literature. The model predictions agree well with empirical observations reported for larger crustaceans, in that swimming for copepods is relatively costly. The ratio of active to standard metabolism for P. xiphias was >3. Net cost of transport was intermediate to the values found experimentally for fish and larger crustaceans. This was a consequence of the predicted mechanical efficiency (34%) of the copepod's paddle propulsion, and of increased parasitic resistance resulting from non-steady velocity swimming. 相似文献

Metabolic cold adaptation in Antarctic fishes: evidence from enzymatic activities of brain 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
To evaluate the concept of metabolic cold adaptation (MCA) in fishes, we compared - in brain, red muscle, and white muscle of Antarctic notothenioid fishes and tropical/subtropical fishes - the activities of two enzymes of ATP-generating pathways, citrate synthase (CS), an indicator of citric acid cycle activity (aerobic metabolism), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), an indicator of potential for ATP production through anaerobic glycolysis. Brain was chosen because, unlike locomotory muscle, its metabolic activity is not likely to be influenced by a species' level of activity or nutritional status, so MCA should be readily observed if present. CS and LDH activities in brain exhibited a high level of MCA, but compensation to temperature was not complete (48% for CS; 46% for LDH). CS and LDH activities in red and white muscle varied widely among species, according to the general level of locomotory activity. The 'mode of life'-related enzymatic activities in locomotory muscle show that study of MCA at the level of whole organism metabolism is fraught with difficulties and experimental ambiguities. In contrast, the low variation among species within each group in enzymatic activities in brain, and the large differences between groups in CS and LDH activity, show that brain is an excellent study system for evaluating metabolic compensation to temperature. 相似文献

Oxygen consumption was measured as a function of temperature, oxygen partial-pressure (PO2)and species depth of occurrence for twenty-three species of midwater fishes and crustaceans collected from the eastern Gulf of Mexico from June 1981 to July 1985. Q10s (7° to 20°C) of 3.90 and 3.24 were recorded for myctophid and non-myctophid fish groups, respectively, while values of 2.22, 2.19, 2.19 and 2.54 were calculated for sergestid, penaeid, carid and euphausiid crustacean groups, respectively. Q10s were consistent for species within each group. All of the species tested regulated their oxygen consumption to PO2levels normally encountered within the eastern Gulf. Values of critical partial pressure (Pc) ranged from 20 to 40mm Hg and increased slightly with increasing temperature and respiration rate. Declining respiration with increasing minimum depth of occurrence was primarily a function of temperature alone. Changes in size, dry weight and water content contributed only a small fraction to the observed decrease. This finding contrasts with studies from the eastern Pacific Ocean, where temperature is a minor contributor to changes in respiration rate with depth. 相似文献

This paper presents the outcome of a feasibility study on underground coal gasification (UCG) combined with direct carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage (CCS) at a selected site in Bulgaria with deep coal seams (>1,200 m). A series of state-of-the-art geological, geo-mechanical, hydrogeological and computational models supported by experimental tests and techno-economical assessments have been developed for the evaluation of UCG-CCS schemes. Research efforts have been focused on the development of site selection requirements for UCG-CCS, estimation of CO2 storage volumes, review of the practical engineering requirements for developing a commercial UCG-CCS storage site, consideration of drilling and completion issues, and assessments of economic feasibility and environmental impacts of the scheme. In addition, the risks of subsidence and groundwater contamination have been assessed in order to pave the way for a full-scale trial and commercial applications. The current research confirms that cleaner and cheaper energy with reduced emissions can be achieved and the economics are competitive in the future European energy market. However the current research has established that rigorous design and monitor schemes are essential for productivity and safety and the minimisation of the potential environmental impacts. A platform has been established serving to inform policy-makers and aiding strategies devised to alleviate local and global impacts on climate change, while ensuring that energy resources are optimally harnessed. 相似文献

The Curonian Lagoon, the largest in Europe (total surface area 1584?km2), is located in the southern part of the Baltic Sea, from which it is separated by a narrow sand bar and to which it is connected by the Klaipeda Straits. It is characterised by shallow eutrophic waters (mean depth 3.8?m) with average low salinity (<5??) due to the nutrient-rich freshwaters discharged by the river Nemunas. Cyanobacteria blooms, including species producing toxic metabolites, have been a frequent phenomenon in summer. In this study a series of MERIS Full Resolution (FR) satellite images acquired between 2004 and 2009 during summer periods were used to assess the temporal evolution and spatial variability of the lagoon water quality in terms of chlorophyll-a. The models/algorithms were calibrated/validated with field data collected in 2009, based on in situ radiometric (remote sensing reflectance -Rrs-) and limnological (chlorophyll-a concentrations -chl-a-) measurements. The chl-a concentrations were estimated by developing a semi-empirical band ratio (Rrs(708)/Rrs(664)) equation applied to MERIS images after correction for atmospheric effects with the 6S code. Results from this study suggest elevated spatial and temporal variability of chl-a. Spatial variability probably arises from the mosaic of situations within the Curonian lagoon in terms of bottom sediment features, nutrient availability in the water column, water depth and hydrodynamics. Temporal variability is probably linked to complex and interplaying metereological and environmental constraints such as the length of the ice cover period, average water temperatures, wind-induced sediment re-suspension, the pattern of precipitations and river-associated nutrient transport to the lagoon. This study stresses the importance of remote sensing as a valid tool for long-term whole ecosystem studies. The preliminary results need more through analyses and intersection with other environmental data in order to better comprehend algal bloom determinants in complex and extremely dynamic systems such as coastal lagoons. 相似文献
