Six cases of sonographically diagnosed fetal sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) are presented and illustrate the variable features of fetal SCT. The sonographic findings assisted the parents and perinatal team in making decisions, and in two of the cases the children survived after elective Cesarean section and prompt neonatal resection of the tumors. None of the patients showed signs of malignant degeneration of the teratoma or metastases. Fetal SCT no longer should be considered a uniformly fatal condition. The literature on sacrococcygeal teratoma detected after birth indicates that the mortality rate is correlated with the degree of extension of the tumor. Therefore, the classification of sonographically diagnosed fetal SCT according to its size and position is important for decisions regarding pregnancy management. 相似文献

Air samples were collected simultaneously at three urban sites in São Paulo City, Brazil, in winter, spring, summer and fall (in 2000 and 2001). Andersen PUF samplers were used for gas and particles sequential sampling. Samples were analyzed using HRGC/HRMS according to US EPA Method 8290. The greater metropolitan area of São Paulo is the largest industrialized region of Latin America and has a highly polluted atmosphere. Concentrations of dioxins and furans, which are well-known toxic chemicals, ranged from 1.14 pg m−3 to 13.8 pg m−3 (0.047 pg I-TEQ m−3 to 0.751 pg I-TEQ m−3). Principal component analysis showed that all the variables are highly correlated with one another except the 2,3,7,8-TCDD one. This is consistent with the similar concentration profiles observed for the tetra, penta, hexa, hepta and octa-homologous groups of the three sampling sites studied. At all sites, the most abundant compounds were the hepta and octa congeners. The 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF accounted for 37–46% of the total toxicity and the 2,3,7,8-TCDD accounted for 7–16%. Highest mass concentrations of PCDD/Fs were found in the site where there is influence of industrial activities and heavy vehicular traffic fueled by gasohol, diesel, and ethanol. 相似文献

The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of manganese (Mn) from methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT) on grass (Tradescancia) species beside the major urban and rural highways in the greater Toronto area. Grass clippings were collected at distances up to 40 m from the roadside of a wooded, weakly exposed site (E+) and two unwooded, highly exposed sites (E++ and E+++) to Mn contamination. Statistical tests, including analysis of variance and correlation coefficients, were used to compare the Mn deposition on grass species with respect to distance and traffic density. A higher deposition of Mn was expected at the highly exposed sites when compared with the weakly exposed site, but a significantly higher concentration of Mn was observed at weakly exposed rural E+ site (Mn = 54.07 microg/g; dry wt) than the highly exposed urban E++ (Mn = 38.17 microg/g; dry wt) and E+++ (Mn = 35.63 microg/g; dry wt) sites. A significant correlation coefficient was found for Mn and traffic density (r2 = 0.311, p = 0.0074) at the weakly exposed site than at the highly exposed (r2 = 0.1589, p = 0.1052) urban sites. These data demonstrate that despite the continuous use of MMT in Canadian gasoline, the levels do not appear to exceed the worldwide tolerable levels (17-334 g/g; dry wt) in grass species inhabiting ecosystems next to major highways in urban regions. 相似文献

Photodegradation of the herbicide clodinafop-propargyl was investigated on glass surface under sunlight and UV light. Four photoproducts were identified by NMR, IR, and MS. Major photolysis products were 2-[(5-chloro-3-fluoro-2-pyridyloxy) phenoxy] propanoic acid and prop-2-ynyl-2-[(5-chloro-3-hydroxy-2-pyridyloxy) phenoxy] propanoate, while minor were ethyl 2-[(5-chloro-3-fluoro-2-pyridyloxy) phenoxy] propanoate and 1-hydroxypropanyl-2-[(5-chloro-3-fluoro-2-pyridyloxy) phenoxy] propanoate. Rate of photodegradation followed first-order kinetics with significant correlation coefficient. Gas turbine particulate matter (PM) emissions contribute to air quality degradation and are dangerous to both human health and the environment. Currently, PM mass concentrations determined from gravimetric measurements are the default parameter for gas turbine emissions compliance with PM regulations. The measurement of particle size however, is of significant interest due to its specific effects on health and climate science. The mass concentration can be determined from the number-size distribution measurement but requires the experimental evaluation of effective density of a number of particles to establish the power-law relationship. In this study, the effective density of PM emissions from an aircraft Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) with petroleum diesel, conventional aviation fuel (Jet A-1) and a multicomponent surrogate fuel (Banner NP 1014) as combusting fuels have been compared. An experimental configuration consisting of a Differential Mobility Analyzer, a Centrifugal Particle Mass Analyzer and a Condensation Particle Counter (DMA-CPMA-CPC) was deployed for this purpose. Overall, a decrease in the effective density (220–1900 km? 3) with an increase in the particle size was observed and found to depend on the engine operating condition and the type of fuel undergoing combustion. The Indian sugar industry has massive potential for the cogeneration of electrical power. The sugar manufacturing process generates bagasse as a byproduct from cane-crushing. This bagasse can be used as a fuel for the boilers employed in steam raising for the process use and cogeneration. In this study, the potential for power cogeneration in a typical plant under the existing boiler-turbine configuration has been estimated. An alternative configuration requiring capital investment in machinery has also been studied. The cost of cogenerating power, including the cost of fuel, operations and capital services wherever necessary, has been calculated for both these cases, using a linear optimisation method. The exercise allows for the use of multiple fuels, namely bagasse and coal, for cogeneration throughout the year including the cane-crushing season and the off-season. The per unit supply price of cogenerated power thus computed has been compared with the utility's own cost with a view to selling the surplus cogenerated power to the grid. 相似文献

This risk assessment on trichloroethylene (TRI) was carried out specifically for the marine environment, according to the methodology laid down in the EU risk assessment Regulation (1488/94) and the Guidance Document of the EU New and Existing Substances Regulation (TGD, 1997). The study consists of the collection and evaluation of data on effects and environmental concentrations from analytical monitoring programs in large rivers and estuaries in the North Sea area. The risk is indicated by the ratio of the "predicted environmental concentrations" (PEC) and the "predicted no effect concentrations" (PNEC) for the marine aquatic environment. In total, 19 studies for fish, 30 studies for invertebrates and 14 studies for algae have been evaluated. Both acute and chronic toxicity studies have been taken into account and the appropriate assessment factors have been used to define a PNEC value of 150 µg/l. Most of the available monitoring data apply to rivers and estuaries and were used to calculate PECs. The most recent data (1991-1995) support a typical PEC of 0.1 µg TRI/l water and a worst case PEC of 3.5 µg TRI/l water. The calculated PEC/PNEC ratios give a safety margin of 40 to 1,500 between the predicted no effect concentration and the exposure concentration. Hourly average concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 have been measured simultaneously at a site within Birmingham U.K. between October 1994 and October 1995. Comparison of PM10 and NOx data with two other sites in the same city shows comparable summer and winter mean concentrations and highly significant inter-site correlations for both hourly and daily mean data. Over a four-month period samples were also collected for chemical analysis of sulphate, nitrate, chloride, ammonium and elemental and organic carbon. Analysis of the data indicates a marked difference between summer and winter periods. In the winter months PM2.5 comprises about 80% of PM10 and is strongly correlated with NOx indicating the importance of road traffic as a source. In the summer months, coarse particles (PM10−PM2.5) account for almost 50% of PM10 and the influence of resuspended surface dusts and soils and of secondary particulate matter is evident. The chemical analysis data are also consistent with three sources dominating the PM10 composition: vehicle exhaust emissions, secondary ammonium salts and resuspended surface dusts. Coarse particles from resuspension showed a positive dependence on windspeed, whilst elemental carbon derived from road traffic exhibited a negative dependence. 相似文献
